1 C ând s-a hotărât să plecăm pe mare spre Italia, l-au predat atât pe Pavel, cât şi pe alţi prizonieri unui centurion pe nume Iulius, centurion al regimentului imperial.

It was decided that we should go to the country of Italy by ship. Then they put Paul and some other men in chains. Julius, a captain of Caesar’s army, was to watch them.

2 N e-am îmbarcat pe o corabie din Adramita, care urma să plece spre locurile de prin Asia. Cu noi era şi Aristarh, un macedonean din Tesalonic.

We went on a ship that was from the city of Adramyttian. It was going to stop at the towns along the sea-shore of Asia. Aristarchus was with us. He was a man from the city of Thessalonica in the country of Macedonia.

3 Î n ziua următoare am debarcat în Sidon. Iulius s-a purtat omenos cu Pavel şi i-a dat voie să meargă pe la prietenii săi, ca să primească îngrijire.

The next day we stopped in the city of Sidon. Julius was kind to Paul. He let him visit friends who cared for him.

4 A poi am plecat de acolo şi am navigat la adăpostul insulei Cipru, din cauză că vânturile erau potrivnice.

After leaving Sidon we were blown by the wind along the south side of the island of Cyprus. The wind was against us.

5 A m navigat pe marea deschisă – pe lângă Cilicia şi Pamfilia – şi am ajuns la Mira, în Licia.

We crossed the sea along the countries of Cilicia and Pamphylia and got to the city of Myra in the country of Lycia.

6 A colo, centurionul a găsit o corabie din Alexandria, care pleca în Italia, şi ne-a îmbarcat pe ea.

The captain found a ship from the city of Alexandria that was going to the country of Italy. He put us on it.

7 T imp de mai multe zile am navigat încet şi cu greutate. Am ajuns lângă Cnidus şi, pentru că vântul nu ne-a lăsat să mergem acolo, am navigat la adăpostul Cretei, trecând pe lângă Salmon.

For many days the ship did not move fast. It was hard to get to the city of Cnidus. The wind would not let us go on. So we went along the south shore of the island of Crete and passed the end of the island called Salome.

8 D upă ce am trecut de el cu greu, am ajuns la un loc numit „Limanuri bune“, care era aproape de cetatea Lasea.

The wind was against us, and we did not sail very fast. Then we came to a place called Fair Havens. It was near the city of Lasea.

9 T recuse mult timp şi călătoria se făcea de acum periculoasă, pentru că trecuse chiar şi perioada postului. Prin urmare, Pavel i-a sfătuit

Much time had been lost. To keep going that late in the year would mean danger. Paul spoke with strong words,

10 a stfel: „Oamenilor, văd că această călătorie este pe cale să se facă cu mare pagubă şi cu mare pierdere nu numai pentru încărcătură şi corabie, ci şi pentru vieţile noastre!“

“Sirs, it looks to me as if this ship and its freight will be lost. We are in danger of being lost also.”

11 D ar centurionul era mai convins de spusele căpitanului şi ale proprietarului corăbiei decât de spusele lui Pavel.

The captain of the soldiers listened to what the captain of the ship said and not to what Paul said.

12 Î ntrucât portul era nepotrivit pentru a petrece iarna acolo, cei mai mulţi au fost de părere să plece de acolo pe mare şi să încerce să ajungă la Fenix, un port din Creta, îndreptat spre sud-vest şi nord-vest, ca să ierneze acolo. Furtună pe mare

It was not a good place to spend the winter. Most of those on the ship wanted to go on and try to get to Phoenix. Crete was a good place to tie up the ship. They wanted to spend the winter there.

13 V ântul de sud sufla uşor, astfel încât, crezând că-şi pot atinge scopul, au pornit de-a lungul coastei Cretei, cât se putea de aproape.

When a south wind started to blow, they thought their plan was right. They pulled up the anchor and went close to the shore of Crete.

Later a bad wind storm came down from the land. It was called a northeaster.

15 C orabia a fost luată de vânt, fără să se poată împotrivi lui, şi astfel ne-am lăsat duşi de el.

The ship was stopped by the wind. After awhile we gave up and let it go with the wind.

16 A m navigat la adăpostul unei insule mici, numite Cauda, şi cu greu am putut să aducem sub control barca de salvare a corăbiei.

We went behind a small island called Claudia. It was hard work but we were able to make the ship’s boat safe.

17 A u ridicat-o la bord şi apoi s-au folosit de nişte frânghii ca să cuprindă corabia de jur împrejur. De teamă să nu eşueze în bancurile de nisip ale Sirtei, au lăsat jos ancora de furtună şi s-au lăsat duşi de vânt.

They pulled it up and tied ropes around it and the ship. They were afraid of going on the Syrtis sands. So they took the sail down and let the ship go with the wind.

18 F iindcă eram prinşi într-o furtună foarte puternică, în ziua următoare au început să arunce încărcătura corăbiei,

The storm was so bad the high waves were beating against the ship. The next day the men threw some of the freight over into the sea.

19 i ar a treia zi au aruncat cu mâinile lor peste bord şi echipamentul corăbiei.

On the third day, with their own hands, they threw part of the sails and ropes into the sea.

20 T imp de mai multe zile nu s-au văzut nici soarele, nici stelele, iar furtuna n-a slăbit deloc. Într-un final ni se dusese orice speranţă că vom fi salvaţi.

We did not see the sun or stars for many days. A very bad storm kept beating against us. We lost all hope of being saved. Paul Shows His Faith

21 D upă ce a trecut mult timp în care ei nu mai mâncaseră, Pavel s-a ridicat în mijlocul lor şi a zis: „Oamenilor, trebuia să mă ascultaţi şi să nu fi plecat din Creta, ca să fi scăpat de această pagubă şi de această pierdere.

No one had eaten for a long time. Then Paul stood up and said to them, “Men, you should have listened to me and not left Crete. You would not have had this trouble and loss.

22 A cum însă vă sfătuiesc să prindeţi curaj, pentru că nici unul dintre voi nu-şi va pierde viaţa, ci se va pierde doar corabia.

But now I want you to take hope. No one will lose his life. Only the ship will be lost.

23 C ăci noaptea trecută a stat lângă mine un înger al Dumnezeului Căruia Îi aparţin şi Căruia mă închin

I belong to God and I work for Him. Last night an angel of God stood by me

24 ş i mi-a zis: «Nu te teme, Pavel! Tu trebuie să stai înaintea Cezarului şi iată că Dumnezeu ţi i-a dăruit pe toţi cei ce navighează împreună cu tine!»

and said, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand in front of Caesar. God has given you the lives of all the men on this ship.’

25 D e aceea, prindeţi curaj, oamenilor, pentru că eu am credinţă în Dumnezeu că va fi aşa cum mi s-a spus!

So take hope, men. I believe my God will do what He has told me.

26 A cum însă trebuie să naufragiem pe o insulă oarecare.“

But the ship will be lost on some island.”

27 C am în a paisprezecea noapte de când eram purtaţi pe Marea Adriatică, pe la miezul nopţii, marinarii au început să bănuiască că se apropie de uscat.

It was now the fourteenth night. We were going with the wind on the Adriatic Sea. At midnight the sailors thought land was near.

28 A u măsurat adâncimea apei şi au găsit-o de douăzeci de stânjeni. Au înaintat încă puţin, au măsurat din nou adâncimea apei şi au găsit-o de cincisprezece stânjeni.

They let down the lead weight and found the water was not very deep. After they had gone a little farther, they found there was not as much water.

29 D e teamă că vom naufragia undeva în locurile stâncoase, au aruncat patru ancore de la pupă şi aşteptau cu nerăbdare să se facă ziuă.

They were afraid we might be thrown against the rocks on the shore. So they put out four anchors from the back of the ship. Then they waited for morning to come.

30 D ar fiindcă marinarii încercau să fugă de pe corabie şi lăsaseră jos în mare barca de salvare, sub pretextul că urmează să coboare nişte ancore de la proră,

The sailors were thinking of leaving the ship. They let down a boat as if they were going to put out anchors from the front of the ship.

31 P avel le-a zis centurionului şi soldaţilor: „Dacă aceştia nu rămân în corabie, voi nu puteţi fi salvaţi!“

But Paul said to the captain and the soldiers, “These men must stay on the ship or you cannot be safe!”

32 A tunci soldaţii au tăiat frânghiile bărcii de salvare şi au lăsat-o să se ducă.

Then the soldiers cut the ropes and let the boat fall into the sea.

33 C hiar înainte de a se face ziuă, Pavel i-a îndemnat pe toţi să mănânce, spunând: „Astăzi sunt paisprezece zile de când staţi în aşteptare şi, în tot acest timp aţi rămas flămânzi şi n-aţi mâncat nimic.

Just before the light of day came, Paul told all of them to eat. He said, “Today is the fourteenth day you have not eaten.

34 D e aceea vă îndemn să mâncaţi ceva, fiindcă lucrul acesta este pentru propria voastră salvare; căci nici un fir de păr din capul vostru nu se va pierde!“

You must eat. It will give you strength. Not one of you will lose a hair from your head.”

35 Ş i spunând acestea, a luat pâine, I-a mulţumit lui Dumnezeu înaintea tuturor, a frânt-o şi a început să mănânce.

After he said this, he took some bread. He gave thanks to God in front of them all. He broke it in pieces and started to eat.

36 T oţi au prins curaj şi au mâncat şi ei câte ceva.

They all were comforted. Each one ate some food.

37 Î n corabie eram, în total, două sute şaptezeci şi şase de suflete.

All together there were 276 of us on the ship.

38 D upă ce şi-au potolit foamea, au uşurat corabia, aruncând grâul în mare. Naufragiul

After they had eaten, they threw the wheat into the sea so the ship would not be as heavy.

39 C ând s-a făcut zi, n-au recunoscut ţărmul, dar au observat un golf care avea plajă şi s-au hotărât ca, dacă vor putea, să ducă corabia să eşueze acolo.

In the morning they could not see what land they were near. Later they could see a river. Near its mouth there was a shore of sand. They planned to run the ship onto the sand if they could.

40 A u tăiat legăturile ancorelor şi le-au lăsat în mare, dezlegând în acelaşi timp frânghiile care ţineau cârmele; apoi au ridicat în vânt vela cea mică şi s-au îndreptat spre plajă.

The anchors were cut loose and left in the sea. Then they took the ropes off that were holding the rudder. When they put up the sail, the wind took the ship toward shore.

41 S -au lovit însă de un banc de nisip şi corabia a eşuat; prora s-a înfipt în nisip, rămânând împotmolită, în timp ce pupa era ruptă în bucăţi de izbitura valurilor.

But the ship hit a place where the water was low. It was made from where two seas meet. The front of the ship did not move but the back part broke in pieces by the high waves.

42 P lanul soldaţilor era să-i omoare pe prizonieri, ca nu cumva vreunul să scape înotând.

The soldiers planned to kill the men in chains. They were afraid they would swim to shore and get away,

43 D ar centurionul, vrând să-l salveze pe Pavel, i-a împiedicat să-şi îndeplinească planul. El le-a poruncit celor ce ştiau să înoate să sară primii peste bord şi să ajungă la ţărm,

but the captain wanted to save Paul. He kept them from their plan. Calling out to those who could swim, he told them to jump into the sea and swim to shore.

44 i ar ceilalţi să-i urmeze ţinându-se de scânduri sau de bucăţi din corabie. Şi aşa s-a făcut că au ajuns cu toţii în siguranţă la ţărm.

The others should use wood or anything from the ship. In this way, they all got to shore without getting hurt.
