1 T ot poporul s-a strâns ca un singur om în piaţeta din faţa Porţii Apelor. Ei i-au spus cărturarului Ezra să aducă Cartea Legii lui Moise, pe care Domnul o poruncise lui Israel.

Then all the people gathered as one man at the open space in front of the Water Gate. They asked Ezra the writer to bring the book of the Law of Moses which the Lord had given to Israel.

2 P reotul Ezra a adus Legea înaintea adunării alcătuite din bărbaţi, femei şi din toţi cei care erau în stare să o înţeleagă. Era ziua întâi a lunii a şaptea.

And on the first day of the seventh month, Ezra the religious leader brought the Law to the gathering of men, women, and all who were able to understand.

3 E zra a citit din Lege în piaţeta dinaintea Porţii Apelor, de la răsăritul soarelui până la amiază, în prezenţa tuturor bărbaţilor, femeilor şi a celor ce puteau să o înţeleagă. Tot poporul asculta cu atenţie la citirea Cărţii Legii.

He read from it in the open space by the Water Gate from early morning until noon. He read it in front of men and women and those who were able to understand and all the people listened to the book of the Law.

4 C ărturarul Ezra stătea pe o estradă din lemn construită cu acest prilej. Lângă el, la dreapta lui, stăteau Matitia, Şema, Anaia, Uria, Hilchia şi Maaseia, iar la stânga lui – Pedaia, Mişael, Malchia, Haşum, Haşbadana, Zaharia şi Meşulam.

Ezra the writer stood on a raised floor of wood which they had made for this reason. Beside him stood Mattithiah, Shema, Anaiah, Uriah, Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right. And Pedaiah, Mishael, Malchijah, Hashum, Hash-baddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam stood on his left.

5 E zra a deschis Cartea în văzul întregului popor, căci era aşezat mai sus decât poporul. Când a deschis Cartea, tot poporul s-a ridicat în picioare.

All the people saw Ezra open the book, for he was standing above all of them. And all the people stood up when he opened it.

6 E zra L-a binecuvântat pe Domnul, Dumnezeul cel Mare, şi întreg poporul, ridicând mâinile, a răspuns: „Amin! Amin!“ Apoi s-au plecat şi s-au închinat Domnului cu faţa la pământ.

Then Ezra gave honor and thanks to the Lord the great God. And all the people answered, “Let it be so!” while lifting up their hands. They bowed low with their faces to the ground and worshiped the Lord.

7 I osua, Bani, Şerebia, Iamin, Akub, Şabtai, Hodia, Maaseia, Chelita, Azaria, Iozabad, Hanan, Pelaia şi leviţii ajutau poporul să înţeleagă Legea, iar poporul stătea în picioare.

Jeshua, Bani, Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, helped the people understand the Law, while the people stayed in their places.

8 E i citeau desluşit din Cartea Legii lui Dumnezeu şi-i arătau înţelesul, astfel încât poporul să înţeleagă cele citite.

They read from the book of the Law of God, telling the meaning of it so that they understood what was read.

9 G uvernatorul Neemia, preotul şi cărturarul Ezra, precum şi leviţii care învăţau poporul au zis întregului popor: „Această zi este sfântă pentru Domnul, Dumnezeul vostru. Nu bociţi şi nu plângeţi!“ Căci tot poporul începuse să plângă la auzirea cuvintelor Legii.

Then Nehemiah, who was the ruler, and Ezra the religious leader and writer, and the Levites who taught the people, said to all of them, “This day is holy to the Lord your God. Do not cry or be filled with sorrow.” For all the people were crying when they heard the words of the Law.

10 E i le-au mai zis: „Duceţi-vă şi mâncaţi mâncăruri alese, beţi băuturi dulci şi trimiteţi câte ceva şi celor ce n-au nimic pregătit, căci este o zi sfântă pentru Stăpânul nostru. Nu vă mâhniţi, căci bucuria Domnului este tăria voastră!“

Ezra said to them, “Go, eat and drink what you enjoy, and give some to him who has nothing ready. For this day is holy to our Lord. Do not be sad for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

11 L eviţii domoleau poporul, zicându-le: „Linişte, căci aceasta este o zi sfântă! Nu vă mâhniţi!“

So the Levites made all the people quiet, saying, “Be quiet, for this is a holy day. Do not be sad.”

12 T ot poporul s-a dus apoi să mănânce, să bea şi să trimită câte ceva şi altora. Au făcut aceasta cu mare bucurie, căci înţeleseseră cuvintele care le fuseseră explicate. Celebrarea Sărbătorii Corturilor

And all the people went away to eat and drink, to share what they had, and to show their joy. They understood the words which had been made known to them.

13 A doua zi căpeteniile familiilor întregului popor, preoţii şi leviţii au fost convocaţi la cărturarul Ezra ca să li se explice cuvintele Legii.

On the second day the heads of the family groups of all the people, the religious leaders, and the Levites were gathered to Ezra the writer, that they might better understand the words of the Law.

14 A u găsit scris în Legea poruncită de Domnul prin Moise că israeliţii trebuie să locuiască în corturi în timpul sărbătorii din luna a şaptea.

They found written in the Law how the Lord had said through Moses that the sons of Israel should live in tents during the special supper of the seventh month.

15 T otodată au înţeles că trebuie să proclame şi să răspândească în toate cetăţile lor şi în Ierusalim următoarea veste: „Duceţi-vă la munte şi aduceţi ramuri de măslin, ramuri de măslin sălbatic, ramuri de mirt, ramuri de palmier şi ramuri de alţi copaci stufoşi, ca să faceţi corturi, după cum este scris.“

So they made it known in all their cities and in Jerusalem, saying, “Go out to the hills and bring branches of olive, wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other trees with leaves, to make tents, as it is written.”

16 P oporul a ieşit, a adunat ramuri şi şi-a făcut corturi, fiecare pe acoperişul casei lui, în curtea lui sau în curţile Casei lui Dumnezeu, în piaţeta de la Poarta Apelor şi în piaţeta de la Poarta Efraim.

So the people went out and brought them and made tents for themselves, each on his roof. And they made tents in their open spaces, in the open spaces of the house of God, in the place by the Water Gate, and in the place by the Gate of Ephraim.

17 T oată mulţimea întoarsă din captivitate şi-a făcut corturi şi a locuit în ele. Israeliţii nu mai făcuseră aşa ceva de pe vremea lui Iosua, fiul lui Nun. Şi a fost o bucurie nespus de mare.

All the people who had returned from Babylon made tents and lived in them. The sons of Israel had not done so since the days of Joshua the son of Nun. And there was much joy.

18 A u citit din Cartea Legii lui Dumnezeu în fiecare zi, din prima zi până în ultima zi. Au ţinut sărbătoarea timp de şapte zile, iar în ziua a opta au avut o adunare sfântă, aşa cum era rânduit.

Every day Ezra read from the book of the Law of God, from the first day to the last day. They held the special supper seven days, and on the eighth day there was a special gathering, as it is written in the Law.
