1 „ Fraţi şi părinţi, ascultaţi-mi acum apărarea faţă de voi!“

Paul said, “Brothers and fathers, listen to what I have to say to you.”

2 C ând au auzit ei că li se adresează în limba aramaică, au făcut şi mai multă linişte.

When they heard him speak to them in their own language, they stopped making noise. Then he said,

3 P avel a zis: „Eu sunt iudeu, născut în Tarsul Ciliciei, dar am fost crescut în cetatea aceasta şi am fost educat la picioarele lui Gamaliel, potrivit cu stricteţea Legii strămoşilor noştri, fiind tot atât de plin de râvnă faţă de Dumnezeu cum sunteţi voi toţi astăzi.

“I am a Jew. I was born in the city of Tarsus in the country of Cilicia. When I was a young man, I lived here in Jerusalem. I went to Gamaliel’s school and learned all about the Law of our early fathers. I worked hard for God as you all do today.

4 A m persecutat până la moarte această Cale, am legat şi am pus în închisoare bărbaţi şi femei,

6 Î n timp ce eram pe drum şi mă apropiam de Damasc, pe la amiază, a strălucit deodată împrejurul meu o lumină puternică din cer.

“I was near Damascus. All at once, about noon, I saw a bright light from heaven shining around me.

7 A m căzut la pământ şi am auzit un glas care-mi zicea: «Saul, Saul, de ce Mă persecuţi?»

I fell to the ground. A voice said to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you work so hard against Me?’

8 E u am întrebat: «Cine eşti, Doamne ?» El mi-a răspuns: «Eu sunt Isus din Nazaret, Cel pe Care tu Îl persecuţi!»

I said, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ He said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, the One you are working against.’

9 C ei care erau împreună cu mine vedeau într-adevăr lumina, dar nu înţelegeau cuvintele Celui Ce-mi vorbea.

Those who were with me saw the light. But they did not hear Him speaking to me.

10 A m întrebat: «Ce să fac, Doamne?» Domnul mi-a răspuns: «Ridică-te, du-te în Damasc, şi acolo ţi se va spune tot ce s-a hotărât să faci.»

I asked, ‘Lord, what should I do?’ The Lord said to me, ‘Get up! Go to Damascus. You will be told what to do there.’

11 C um, din cauza strălucirii acelei lumini, nu puteam vedea, cei care erau cu mine m-au luat de mână şi m-au dus în Damasc.

“I could not see because of the bright light. Those who were with me had to lead me by the hand until we came to Damascus.

12 U n anume Ananias, bărbat temător de Dumnezeu, după cum cere Legea, şi vorbit de bine de către toţi iudeii care locuiau acolo,

Ananias lived there. He obeyed the Law and was respected by all the Jews.

13 a venit la mine şi, stându-mi alături, mi-a zis: «Frate Saul, recapătă-ţi vederea!» Chiar în clipa aceea mi-am recăpătat vederea şi m-am uitat la el.

He came and stood near me and said, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight.’ At once I was able to see him.

14 E l a zis: «Dumnezeul strămoşilor noştri te-a ales ca să-I cunoşti voia, să-L vezi pe Cel Drept şi să auzi cuvinte din gura Lui,

Then Ananias said, ‘The God of our fathers chose you to know what He wants done. He chose you to see Jesus Christ, the One Right with God, and to hear His voice.

15 p entru că Îi vei fi martor înaintea tuturor oamenilor pentru lucrurile pe care le-ai văzut şi auzit.

You are to tell all men what you have seen and heard.

16 I ar acum, ce aştepţi?! Ridică-te, fii botezat şi fii spălat de păcatele tale, chemând Numele Lui!»

What are you waiting for? Get up! Be baptized. Have your sins washed away by calling on His name.’ Paul Is Called to Work with the People Who Are Not Jews

17 D upă ce m-am întors la Ierusalim, în timp ce mă rugam în Templu, am căzut într-o răpire sufletească

“I came back to Jerusalem. When I was praying in the house of God, I had a dream.

18 ş i L-am văzut pe Domnul spunându-mi: «Grăbeşte-te, ieşi repede din Ierusalim, pentru că nu vor primi mărturia ta despre Mine!»

I saw Him as He said to me, ‘Get out of Jerusalem! They will not listen to you when you tell them about Me!’

19 E u am zis: «Doamne, ei ştiu că eu îi băgam în închisoare şi îi băteam prin sinagogi pe cei ce cred în Tine,

I said, ‘Lord, they know I took Christians out of every Jewish place of worship. I had them beaten and put in prison.

20 i ar când era vărsat sângele lui Ştefan, martorul Tău, eram şi eu de faţă, dându-mi aprobarea şi păzind hainele celor ce-l omorau!»

Also when Stephen was killed, I stood there and watched them throw stones at him. Those who threw the stones had me watch their coats.’

21 Î nsă El mi-a zis: «Du-te, pentru că te voi trimite departe, la neamuri!»“ Pavel şi tribunul roman

The Lord said to me, ‘Go! I will send you far away to the people who are not Jews.’ ”

22 E i l-au ascultat până la cuvântul acesta, dar apoi şi-au ridicat glasul, zicând: „Ia de pe pământ un astfel de om, căci nu este vrednic să trăiască!“

They listened to him until he said that. Then they all cried out with loud voices, “Kill him! Take such a man from the earth! He should not live!”

23 Î n timp ce ei ţipau, îşi azvârleau hainele şi aruncau praf în văzduh,

They kept on calling out. Then they pulled off their coats and threw dust in the air. Paul Tells Who He Is

24 t ribunul a poruncit să fie dus în fort şi să fie interogat prin lovituri de bici, ca să afle din ce cauză strigau aşa împotriva lui.

The captain told them to bring Paul into the soldiers’ building. He told his soldiers to find out from Paul, by beating him, why the people were crying out against him.

25 Î n timp ce-l legau cu curele, Pavel i-a zis centurionului care stătea acolo: „Vă este permis să biciuiţi un cetăţean roman care n-a fost judecat?“

As they tied him up, Paul said to the soldier, “Does the law say that you can beat a Roman citizen when no one has said he is guilty?”

26 A uzind aceasta, centurionul s-a dus la tribun şi l-a anunţat, spunându-i: „Ce vrei să faci? Omul acesta este roman!“

When the soldier heard this, he told it to the captain. He said, “Listen! What are you doing? This man is a Roman citizen.”

27 T ribunul s-a dus la el şi l-a întrebat: – Spune-mi, eşti roman? – Da, i-a răspuns Pavel.

The captain came and asked Paul, “Tell me, are you a Roman citizen?” Paul said, “Yes!”

28 T ribunul a zis: – Eu cu o mare sumă de bani am dobândit cetăţenia aceasta. Pavel i-a zis: – Eu sunt chiar născut roman.

The captain said, “I had to pay a lot of money to be a citizen.” Paul said, “But I was born a Roman.”

29 I mediat, cei ce urmau să-l interogheze s-au retras de la el, iar tribunul, când a aflat că este cetăţean roman, s-a temut, pentru că-l legase. Pavel înaintea Sinedriului

Those who were going to beat him left him at once. The captain was also afraid when he heard that Paul was a Roman citizen because he had him tied. Paul Stands in Front of the Religious Leaders’ Court

30 Î n ziua următoare, vrând să ştie exact de ce era acuzat de iudei, l-a dezlegat şi a poruncit să se adune conducătorii preoţilor şi tot Sinedriul. Apoi l-a adus pe Pavel jos şi l-a pus să stea înaintea lor.

The next day they took off the chains that were holding Paul. The captain wanted to know why the Jews wanted to kill him. So the captain told the head religious leaders to gather for their court. They brought Paul and put him in front of them.
