1 „ Fraţi şi părinţi, ascultaţi-mi acum apărarea faţă de voi!“

Brethren and fathers, listen to the defense which I now make in your presence.

2 C ând au auzit ei că li se adresează în limba aramaică, au făcut şi mai multă linişte.

And when they heard that he addressed them in the Hebrew tongue, they were all the more quiet. And he continued,

3 P avel a zis: „Eu sunt iudeu, născut în Tarsul Ciliciei, dar am fost crescut în cetatea aceasta şi am fost educat la picioarele lui Gamaliel, potrivit cu stricteţea Legii strămoşilor noştri, fiind tot atât de plin de râvnă faţă de Dumnezeu cum sunteţi voi toţi astăzi.

I am a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia but reared in this city. At the feet of Gamaliel I was educated according to the strictest care in the Law of our fathers, being ardent for God, as all of you are today.

4 A m persecutat până la moarte această Cale, am legat şi am pus în închisoare bărbaţi şi femei,

I harassed (troubled, molested, and persecuted) this Way to the death, putting in chains and committing to prison both men and women,

5 a şa cum, de altfel, pot depune mărturie cu privire la mine şi marele preot precum şi tot sfatul bătrânilor, de la care am primit şi scrisori către fraţii din Damasc, ca să merg şi să-i aduc legaţi la Ierusalim chiar şi pe cei de acolo, ca să fie pedepsiţi.

As the high priest and whole council of elders (Sanhedrin) can testify; for from them indeed I received letters with which I was on my way to the brethren in Damascus in order to take also those who were there, and bring them in chains to Jerusalem that they might be punished.

6 Î n timp ce eram pe drum şi mă apropiam de Damasc, pe la amiază, a strălucit deodată împrejurul meu o lumină puternică din cer.

But as I was on my journey and approached Damascus, about noon a great blaze of light flashed suddenly from heaven and shone about me.

7 A m căzut la pământ şi am auzit un glas care-mi zicea: «Saul, Saul, de ce Mă persecuţi?»

And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me ?

8 E u am întrebat: «Cine eşti, Doamne ?» El mi-a răspuns: «Eu sunt Isus din Nazaret, Cel pe Care tu Îl persecuţi!»

And I replied, Who are You, Lord? And He said to me, I am Jesus the Nazarene, Whom you are persecuting.

9 C ei care erau împreună cu mine vedeau într-adevăr lumina, dar nu înţelegeau cuvintele Celui Ce-mi vorbea.

Now the men who were with me saw the light, but they did not hear '> the sound of the uttered words of] the voice of the One Who was speaking to me '> understand it].

10 A m întrebat: «Ce să fac, Doamne?» Domnul mi-a răspuns: «Ridică-te, du-te în Damasc, şi acolo ţi se va spune tot ce s-a hotărât să faci.»

And I asked, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord answered me, Get up and go into Damascus, and there it will be told you all that it is destined and appointed for you to do.

11 C um, din cauza strălucirii acelei lumini, nu puteam vedea, cei care erau cu mine m-au luat de mână şi m-au dus în Damasc.

And since I could not see because of the brightness of that light, I was led by the hand by those who were with me, and I arrived in Damascus.

12 U n anume Ananias, bărbat temător de Dumnezeu, după cum cere Legea, şi vorbit de bine de către toţi iudeii care locuiau acolo,

And one Ananias, a devout man according to the Law, well spoken of by all the Jews who resided there,

13 a venit la mine şi, stându-mi alături, mi-a zis: «Frate Saul, recapătă-ţi vederea!» Chiar în clipa aceea mi-am recăpătat vederea şi m-am uitat la el.

Came to see me, and standing by my side said to me, Brother Saul, look up and receive back your sight. And in that very instant I looking up saw him.

14 E l a zis: «Dumnezeul strămoşilor noştri te-a ales ca să-I cunoşti voia, să-L vezi pe Cel Drept şi să auzi cuvinte din gura Lui,

And he said, The God of our forefathers has destined and appointed you to come progressively to know His will, and to see the Righteous One (Jesus Christ, the Messiah), and to hear a voice from His mouth and a message from His lips;

15 p entru că Îi vei fi martor înaintea tuturor oamenilor pentru lucrurile pe care le-ai văzut şi auzit.

For you will be His witness unto all men of everything that you have seen and heard.

16 I ar acum, ce aştepţi?! Ridică-te, fii botezat şi fii spălat de păcatele tale, chemând Numele Lui!»

And now, why do you delay? Rise and be baptized, and by calling upon His name, wash away your sins.

17 D upă ce m-am întors la Ierusalim, în timp ce mă rugam în Templu, am căzut într-o răpire sufletească

Then when I had come back to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple '> enclosure], I fell into a trance (an ecstasy);

18 ş i L-am văzut pe Domnul spunându-mi: «Grăbeşte-te, ieşi repede din Ierusalim, pentru că nu vor primi mărturia ta despre Mine!»

And I saw Him as He said to me, Hurry, get quickly out of Jerusalem, because they will not receive your testimony about Me.

19 E u am zis: «Doamne, ei ştiu că eu îi băgam în închisoare şi îi băteam prin sinagogi pe cei ce cred în Tine,

And I said, Lord, they themselves well know that throughout all the synagogues I cast into prison and flogged those who believed on (adhered to and trusted in and relied on) You.

20 i ar când era vărsat sângele lui Ştefan, martorul Tău, eram şi eu de faţă, dându-mi aprobarea şi păzind hainele celor ce-l omorau!»

And when the blood of Your witness (martyr) Stephen was shed, I also was personally standing by and consenting and approving and guarding the garments of those who slew him.

21 Î nsă El mi-a zis: «Du-te, pentru că te voi trimite departe, la neamuri!»“ Pavel şi tribunul roman

And the Lord said to me, Go, for I will send you far away unto the Gentiles (nations).

22 E i l-au ascultat până la cuvântul acesta, dar apoi şi-au ridicat glasul, zicând: „Ia de pe pământ un astfel de om, căci nu este vrednic să trăiască!“

Up to the moment that Paul made this last statement, the people listened to him; but now they raised their voices and shouted, Away with such a fellow from the earth! He is not fit to live!

23 Î n timp ce ei ţipau, îşi azvârleau hainele şi aruncau praf în văzduh,

And as they were shouting and tossing and waving their garments and throwing dust into the air,

24 t ribunul a poruncit să fie dus în fort şi să fie interogat prin lovituri de bici, ca să afle din ce cauză strigau aşa împotriva lui.

The commandant ordered that Paul be brought into the barracks, and that he be examined by scourging in order that might learn why the people cried out thus against him.

25 Î n timp ce-l legau cu curele, Pavel i-a zis centurionului care stătea acolo: „Vă este permis să biciuiţi un cetăţean roman care n-a fost judecat?“

But when they had stretched him out with the thongs (leather straps), Paul asked the centurion who was standing by, Is it legal for you to flog a man who is a Roman citizen and uncondemned ?

26 A uzind aceasta, centurionul s-a dus la tribun şi l-a anunţat, spunându-i: „Ce vrei să faci? Omul acesta este roman!“

When the centurion heard that, he went to the commandant and said to him, What are you about to do? This man is a Roman citizen!

27 T ribunul s-a dus la el şi l-a întrebat: – Spune-mi, eşti roman? – Da, i-a răspuns Pavel.

So the commandant came and said to, Tell me, are you a Roman citizen? And he said, Yes!

28 T ribunul a zis: – Eu cu o mare sumă de bani am dobândit cetăţenia aceasta. Pavel i-a zis: – Eu sunt chiar născut roman.

The commandant replied, I purchased this citizenship for a big price. Paul said, But I was born!

29 I mediat, cei ce urmau să-l interogheze s-au retras de la el, iar tribunul, când a aflat că este cetăţean roman, s-a temut, pentru că-l legase. Pavel înaintea Sinedriului

Instantly those who were about to examine and flog him withdrew from him; and the commandant also was frightened, for he realized that was a Roman citizen and he had put him in chains.

30 Î n ziua următoare, vrând să ştie exact de ce era acuzat de iudei, l-a dezlegat şi a poruncit să se adune conducătorii preoţilor şi tot Sinedriul. Apoi l-a adus pe Pavel jos şi l-a pus să stea înaintea lor.

But the next day, desiring to know the real cause for which the Jews accused him, he unbound him and ordered the chief priests and all the council (Sanhedrin) to assemble; and he brought Paul down and placed him before them.
