1 A scultaţi Cuvântul Domnului, israeliţi, căci Domnul are o acuză împotriva locuitorilor ţării: „Nu există credincioşie, nu există bunătate, nu există cunoştinţă de Dumnezeu în ţară!

Hear the word of the Lord, you children of Israel, for the Lord has a controversy (a pleading contention) with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no faithfulness, love, pity and mercy, or knowledge of God in the land.

2 F iecare jură strâmb, înşală, ucide, fură şi comite adulter. Ei năpăstuiesc, iar vărsările de sânge se ţin lanţ.

There is nothing but swearing and breaking faith and killing and stealing and committing adultery; they break out, one bloodshed following close on another.

3 D e aceea ţara jeleşte şi toţi cei ce locuiesc în ea sunt sleiţi; fiarele câmpului, păsările cerului şi peştii mării sunt pe cale să piară.

Therefore shall the land mourn, and all who dwell in it shall languish, together with the wild beasts of the open country and the birds of the heavens; yes, the fishes of the sea also shall be collected and taken away.

4 D ar nimeni să nu certe pe altcineva, nici un om să nu acuze pe altul. Poporul tău este asemenea celor ce acuză un preot.

Yet let no man strive, neither let any man reprove, for with you is My contention, O priest.

5 T e vei împiedica ziua, iar profetul se va împiedica împreună cu tine noaptea. O voi nimici pe mama ta –

And you shall stumble in the daytime, and the prophet also shall stumble with you in the night; and I will destroy your mother.

6 p oporul Meu este nimicit din lipsă de cunoştinţă. Pentru că ai respins cunoştinţa, şi Eu te resping ca preot al Meu! Fiindcă ai uitat Legea Dumnezeului tău, şi Eu îţi voi uita fiii!

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you that you shall be no priest to Me; seeing you have forgotten the law of your God, I will also forget your children.

7 C u cât s-au înmulţit preoţii, cu atât au păcătuit mai mult împotriva Mea. Ei au dat slava lor în schimbul ruşinii.

The more they increased and multiplied, the more they sinned against Me; I will change their glory into shame.

8 E i se hrănesc cu păcatele poporului Meu şi le savurează sufletul după fărădelegile lui.

They feed on the sin of My people and set their heart on their iniquity.

9 D ar şi preotul va avea aceeaşi soartă cu cea a poporului: îi voi pedepsi pe amândoi după căile lor, le voi răsplăti după faptele lor. Idolatria lui Israel

And it shall be: Like people, like priest; I will punish them for their ways and repay them for their doings.

10 V or mânca, dar nu se vor sătura, se vor prostitua, dar nu se vor înmulţi, căci L-au părăsit pe Domnul şi s-au dedat la

For they shall eat and not have enough; they shall play the harlot and beget no increase, because they have forsaken the Lord for harlotry;

11 d esfrânare, la vin şi la must, care iau minţile

Harlotry and wine and new wine take away the heart and the mind and the spiritual understanding.

12 p oporului Meu. Ei îşi întreabă bucata de lemn şi un băţ îi sfătuieşte, căci un duh de desfrâu îi duce în rătăcire. Ei se prostituează, uitând de Dumnezeul lor.

My people ask counsel of their wood, and their staff gives them oracles and instructs them. For the spirit of harlotry has led them astray and they have played the harlot, withdrawing themselves from subjection to their God.

13 A duc jertfe pe vârfurile munţilor şi ard tămâie pe dealuri, sub stejari, sub plopi şi sub terebinţi, căci umbra lor este plăcută. De aceea fetele voastre se prostituează şi nurorile voastre comit adulter.

They sacrifice on the tops of the mountains, and they burn incense upon the hills and under oaks, poplars, and terebinths, because there the shade is good. Therefore your daughters play the harlot and your sons’ wives commit adultery.

14 N u le voi pedepsi pe fetele voastre pentru că se prostituează şi nici pe nurorile voastre pentru că comit adulter, căci bărbaţii înşişi se retrag deoparte cu prostituatele şi aduc jertfe cu prostituatele de la temple. Un astfel de popor căruia îi lipseşte discernământul va ajunge la ruină.

I will not punish your daughters when they play the harlot nor your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery, for themselves go aside in order to be alone with women who prostitute themselves for gain, and they sacrifice at the altar with dedicated harlots. Therefore the people without understanding shall stumble and fall and come to ruin.

15 D acă tu, Israele, te prostituezi, măcar Iuda să nu se facă vinovat! Nu vă duceţi la Ghilgal, nu vă suiţi la Bet-Aven şi nu juraţi cu: «Viu este Domnul!»

Though you, Israel, play the harlot and worship idols, let not Judah offend and become guilty; come not to Gilgal, neither go up to Beth-aven, nor swear, As the Lord lives.

16 I srael este încăpăţânat ca o juncă îndărătnică. Deci cum o s-o mai pască Domnul ca pe un miel pe o păşune întinsă?

For Israel has behaved stubbornly, like a stubborn heifer. How then should he expect to be fed and treated by the Lord like a lamb in a large pasture?

17 E fraim s-a unit cu idolii; lăsaţi-l în pace!

Ephraim is joined to idols, let him alone.

18 D eşi băutura s-a sfârşit, ei continuă să se prostitueze; conducătorii lui iubesc mult ruşinea.

Their drinking carousal over, they go habitually to play the harlot; rulers love shame more than her glory.

19 U n vânt îi va înfăşura cu aripile lui, şi ei vor fi făcuţi de ruşine din pricina jertfelor lor.“

The resistless wind has bound up in its wings or skirts, and they and their altars shall be put to shame because of their sacrifices.
