1 A tunci Ţofar din Naamat a luat cuvântul şi a zis:

Then Zophar the Naamathite replied,

2 „ Să rămână tot acest potop de cuvinte fără răspuns şi toate aceste vorbe multe să fie o dovadă a dreptăţii?

Should not the multitude of words be answered? And should a man full of talk be pronounced free from guilt or blame?

3 C rezi că flecăreala ta va închide gura altora şi că-ţi vei bate joc de alţii fără să te mustre nimeni?

Should your boastings and babble make men keep silent? And when you mock and scoff, shall no man make you ashamed?

4 T u zici: «Învăţătura mea e curată şi sunt fără pată în ochii Tăi!»,

For you have said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in eyes.

5 d ar de-ar vorbi Dumnezeu, de Şi-ar deschide gura împotriva ta

But oh, that God would speak, and open His lips against you,

6 ş i de ţi-ar arăta tainele înţelepciunii, – căci adevărata înţelepciune are două feţe, – ai şti atunci că Dumnezeu ţi-a iertat mai mult decât meriţi.

And that He would show you the secrets of wisdom! For He is manifold in understanding! Know therefore that God exacts of you less than your guilt and iniquity.

7 P oţi tu să descoperi misterele lui Dumnezeu? Poţi tu să descoperi capătul Celui Atotputernic?

Can you find out the deep things of God, or can you by searching find out the limits of the Almighty ?

8 E le sunt cât înălţimile cerurilor – ce poţi face? Ele sunt mai adânci decât Locuinţa Morţilor – ce poţi şti?

His wisdom is as high as the heights of heaven! What can you do? It is deeper than Sheol (the place of the dead)! What can you know?

9 Î ntinderea lor este mai lungă decât pământul şi mai largă decât marea.

Longer in measure is it than the earth, and broader than the sea.

10 D acă El trece şi întemniţează şi cheamă la judecată, cine-L poate opri?

If sweeps in and arrests and calls into judgment, who can hinder Him?

11 P entru că El îi cunoaşte pe bărbaţii înşelători, iar când vede răutatea, oare nu va lua seamă?

For He recognizes and knows hollow, wicked, and useless men (men of falsehood); when He sees iniquity, will He not consider it?

12 D ar un om nătâng nu poate deveni înţelept, după cum nici măgarul sălbatic nu se poate naşte om.

But a stupid man will get wisdom when a wild donkey’s colt is born a man.

13 D acă îţi vei îndrepta inima şi îţi vei ridica mâinile spre El,

If you set your heart aright and stretch out your hands to,

14 d acă vei înlătura nedreptatea din mâna ta şi nu vei lăsa ca în cortul tău să locuiască răutatea,

If you put sin out of your hand and far away from you and let not evil dwell in your tents;

15 a tunci îţi vei putea ridica faţa fără să te ruşinezi, vei fi tare şi nu te vei teme.

Then can you lift up your face to Him without stain; yes, you shall be steadfast and secure; you shall not fear.

16 Î ţi vei uita necazul şi-ţi vei aminti de ea ca de apele care au trecut.

For you shall forget your misery; you shall remember it as waters that pass away.

17 V iaţa ta va fi mai strălucitoare ca amiaza şi întunericul ei va fi ca dimineaţa.

And life shall be clearer than the noonday and rise above it; though there be darkness, it shall be as the morning.

18 V ei fi plin de încredere pentru că va fi nădejde, vei fi păzit şi te vei odihni în siguranţă.

And you shall be secure and feel confident because there is hope; yes, you shall search about you, and you shall take your rest in safety.

19 T e vei culca şi nimeni nu te va mai înspăimânta; mulţi vor căuta bunăvoinţa ta.

You shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid; yes, many shall sue for your favor.

20 D ar ochii celor răi vor cădea de oboseală, orice cale de scăpare va fi pierdută pentru ei şi nădejdea lor e să-şi dea ultima suflare.“

But the eyes of the wicked shall look in vain, and they shall not escape; and their hope shall be to give up the ghost.
