4 N u te trudi să te îmbogăţeşti; fii înţelept să arăţi cumpătare!

Weary not yourself to be rich; cease from your own wisdom.

5 A bia ţi-ai aruncat ochii asupra bogăţiei şi nu mai este, căci, în mod sigur, îi vor creşte aripi, şi va fugi spre ceruri ca un vultur!

Will you set your eyes upon wealth, when it is gone? For riches certainly make themselves wings, like an eagle that flies toward the heavens.

6 N u mânca pâinea zgârcitului şi nu pofti delicatesele lui,

Eat not the bread of him who has a hard, grudging, and envious eye, neither desire his dainty foods;

7 c ăci el este omul care întotdeauna se gândeşte la cost! „Mănâncă şi bea“, îţi spune el, dar inima lui nu este cu tine.

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. As one who reckons, he says to you, eat and drink, yet his heart is not with you.

8 V ei vărsa bucăţica pe care ai mâncat-o şi-ţi vei irosi cuvintele tale plăcute.

The morsel which you have eaten you will vomit up, and your complimentary words will be wasted.

9 N u vorbi unui prost, căci el va dispreţui înţelepciunea cuvintelor tale!

Speak not in the ears of a fool, for he will despise the Wisdom of your words.

10 N u muta hotarul cel vechi şi nu intra pe ogorul orfanilor,

Remove not the ancient landmark and enter not into the fields of the fatherless,

11 c ăci Apărătorul lor este puternic! El le va apăra cauza împotriva ta.

For their Redeemer is mighty; He will plead their cause against you.

12 A pleacă-ţi inima spre învăţătură şi urechile la cuvintele cunoştinţei!

Apply your mind to instruction and correction and your ears to words of knowledge.

13 N u scuti copilul de disciplinare, căci dacă îl pedepseşti cu nuiaua, nu va muri!

Withhold not discipline from the child; for if you strike and punish him with the rod, he will not die.

14 D acă îl pedepseşti cu nuiaua, îi vei salva sufletul din Locuinţa Morţilor.

You shall whip him with the rod and deliver his life from Sheol (Hades, the place of the dead).

15 F iul meu, dacă inima ta este înţeleaptă, atunci inima mea se va bucura.

My son, if your heart is wise, my heart will be glad, even mine;

16 L ăuntrul fiinţei mele se va înveseli când buzele tale vor spune ce este drept.

Yes, my heart will rejoice when your lips speak right things.

17 N u-ţi lăsa inima să invidieze pe cei păcătoşi, ci să ai întotdeauna frică de Domnul!

Let not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord all the day long.

18 C u siguranţă există o răsplată viitoare şi nădejdea ta nu va fi tăiată!

For surely there is a latter end, and your hope and expectation shall not be cut off.

19 A scultă, fiul meu, şi fii înţelept, păstrează-ţi inima pe cărarea dreaptă!

Hear, my son, and be wise, and direct your mind in the way.

20 N u fi printre cei care beau mult vin, nici printre cei ce se ghiftuiesc cu carne,

Do not associate with winebibbers; be not among them nor among gluttonous eaters of meat,

21 c ăci beţivul şi mâncăul vor sărăci, iar somnolenţa îi va îmbrăca în zdrenţe!

For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty, and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

22 A scultă de tatăl tău, care ţi-a dat viaţă şi nu-ţi dispreţui mama, când a îmbătrânit!

Hearken to your father, who begot you, and despise not your mother when she is old.

23 C umpără adevărul şi nu-l vinde, dobândeşte înţelepciunea, învăţătura şi priceperea!

Buy the truth and sell it not; not only that, but also get discernment and judgment, instruction and understanding.

24 T atăl celui drept va avea mari bucurii; cine are un fiu înţelept se bucură de el.

The father of the righteous (the upright, in right standing with God) shall greatly rejoice, and he who becomes the father of a wise child shall have joy in him.

25 S ă se bucure tatăl tău şi mama ta, să se înveselească cea care te-a născut!

Let your father and your mother be glad, and let her who bore you rejoice.

26 F iul meu, dă-mi inima ta şi să găsească plăcere ochii tăi în căile mele,

My son, give me your heart and let your eyes observe and delight in my ways,

27 c ăci prostituata este o groapă adâncă şi femeia străină este o fântână îngustă.

For a harlot is a deep ditch, and a loose woman is a narrow pit.

28 E a pândeşte ca un hoţ şi îi înmulţeşte pe cei necredincioşi între oameni.

She also lies in wait as a robber or as one waits for prey, and she increases the treacherous among men.

29 A le cui sunt vaiurile? Ale cui sunt oftările? Ale cui sunt certurile? Ale cui sunt plângerile? Ale cui sunt rănile fără motiv? Ai cui sunt ochii roşii?

Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness and dimness of eyes?

30 A le celor ce întârzie la vin şi care se duc să caute vasul cu vin amestecat.

Those who tarry long at the wine, those who go to seek and try mixed wine.

31 N u te uita la vin când este roşu, când spumegă în pahar şi când alunecă uşor!

Do not look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the wineglass, when it goes down smoothly.

32 C ăci la urmă muşcă ca un şarpe şi otrăveşte ca o viperă.

At the last it bites like a serpent and stings like an adder.

33 O chii tăi vor vedea lucruri ciudate şi inima ta va vorbi lucruri stricate.

your eyes will behold strange things and your mind will utter things turned the wrong way.

34 V ei fi ca un om culcat în mijlocul mării sau ca unul întins pe vârful unui catarg.

Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the midst of the sea, and as he who lies upon the top of a mast.

35 „ M-au lovit, dar nu m-au rănit! M-au bătut, dar nu simt nimic! Când mă voi trezi, pot găsi altceva de băut?“

You will say, They struck me, but I was not hurt! They beat me, but I did not feel it! When shall I awake? I will crave and seek more wine again.
