1 D omnul i-a răspuns lui Iov din mijlocul furtunii:

Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said,

2 „ Cine este cel ce-Mi întunecă sfatul, prin cuvântări lipsite de cunoştinţă?

Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?

3 Î ncinge-ţi mijlocul ca un bărbat, ca Eu să te întreb şi tu să Mă înveţi.

Gird up now your loins like a man, and I will demand of you, and you declare to Me.

4 U nde erai când am aşezat temeliile pământului? Spune, dacă ai pricepere!

Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Declare to Me, if you have and know understanding.

5 C ine i-a hotărât măsurile? Ştii? Cine a întins sfoara de măsurat peste el?

Who determined the measures of the earth, if you know? Or who stretched the measuring line upon it?

6 P e ce îi sunt sprijinite temeliile şi cine i-a pus piatra din capul unghiului,

Upon what were the foundations of it fastened, or who laid its cornerstone,

7 a tunci când stelele dimineţii cântau împreună şi toţi fiii lui Dumnezeu strigau de bucurie?

When the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

8 C ine a închis marea cu porţi, când a ţâşnit din pântece,

Or who shut up the sea with doors when it broke forth and issued out of the womb?—

9 c ând i-am făcut îmbrăcăminte din nori şi am înfăşat-o în întuneric gros,

When I made the clouds the garment of it, and thick darkness a swaddling band for it,

10 c ând i-am pus hotare, zăvoare şi porţi,

And marked for it My appointed boundary and set bars and doors,

11 c ând i-am zis: «Până aici să vii, să nu treci mai departe, aici să se oprească mândria valurilor tale!»?

And said, Thus far shall you come and no farther; and here shall your proud waves be stayed?

12 A i poruncit tu vreodată dimineţii sau ai arătat zorilor locul lor,

Have you commanded the morning since your days began and caused the dawn to know its place,

13 c a să prindă pământul de margini şi să-i scuture pe cei răi de pe el?

So that may get hold of the corners of the earth and shake the wickedness out of it?

14 P ământul ia forma lutului sub o pecete; înfăţisarea lui este ca cea a unei haine.

It is changed like clay into which a seal is pressed; and things stand out like a many-colored garment.

15 L umina este luată de la cei răi şi braţul lor cel ridicat este zdrobit.

From the wicked their light is withheld, and their uplifted arm is broken.

16 A i fost tu la izvoarele mării sau te-ai plimbat tu prin adâncurile ei?

Have you explored the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in the recesses of the deep?

17 Ţ i-au fost arătate porţile morţii sau ai văzut tu porţile umbrei morţii ?

Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the doors of deep darkness?

18 P ricepi tu cât de larg este pământul? Vorbeşte dacă ştii toate aceste lucruri.

Have you comprehended the breadth of the earth? Tell Me, if you know it all.

19 U nde este calea către locuinţa luminii şi unde este locuinţa întunericului?

Where is the way where light dwells? And as for darkness, where is its abode,

20 P oţi să le duci tu la hotarul lor şi cunoşti tu căile către casa lor?

That you may conduct it to its home, and may know the paths to its house?

21 C u siguranţă, ar trebui să ştii, căci doar erai deja născut! Şi numărul zilelor tale este mare!

You must know, since you were born then! Or because you are so extremely old!

22 A i intrat tu în cămările zăpezii sau ai văzut tu cămările grindinei,

Have you entered the treasuries of the snow, or have you seen the treasuries of the hail,

23 p e care Eu le-am păstrat pentru vreme de necaz, pentru ziua de luptă şi de război?

Which I have reserved for the time of trouble, for the day of battle and war?

24 U nde este calea către locul de unde iese fulgerul ? De unde este împrăştiat vântul de răsărit pe pământ?

By what way is the light distributed, or the east wind spread over the earth?

25 C ine deschide o cale pentru ploaie şi o cărare pentru trăsnet,

Who has prepared a channel for the torrents of rain, or a path for the thunderbolt,

26 c a să ude pământul nelocuit, deşertul în care nu trăieşte nimeni,

To cause it to rain on the uninhabited land on the desert where no man lives,

27 c a să adape pământul pustiit şi să facă să încolţească iarba?

To satisfy the waste and desolate ground and to cause the tender grass to spring forth?

28 A re ploaia tată? Sau cine dă naştere picăturilor de rouă?

Has the rain a father? Or who has begotten the drops of dew?

29 D in care pântece iese gheaţa şi cine naşte bruma cerului

Out of whose womb came the ice? And the hoary frost of heaven, who has given it birth?

30 c ând apele se fac tari ca piatra şi când îngheaţă faţa adâncului?

The waters are congealed like stone, and the face of the deep is frozen.

31 P oţi tu lega lanţul Pleiadelor sau poţi să dezlegi frânghiile Orionului?

Can you bind the chains of Pleiades, or loose the cords of Orion?

32 P oţi face să răsară constelaţiile la vremea lor sau poţi să călăuzeşti Ursul cu puii săi?

Can you lead forth the signs of the zodiac in their season? Or can you guide the Bear with her young?

33 C unoşti tu legile cerului? Poţi hotărî stăpânirea Lui asupra pământului?

Do you know the ordinances of the heavens? Can you establish their rule upon the earth?

34 P oţi să-ţi înalţi glasul până la nori şi să te acoperi cu un şuvoi de apă?

Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, so that an abundance of waters may cover you?

35 P oţi tu trimite fulgere ca astfel ele să plece? Îţi spun ele: «Iată-ne»!

Can you send lightnings, that they may go and say to you, Here we are?

36 C ine a pus înţelepciunea în locuri lăuntrice şi a dat pricepere minţii ?

Who has put wisdom in the inward parts ? Or who has given understanding to the mind ?

37 C ine are înţelepciune să numere norii? Cine poate vărsa burdufurile cerurilor,

Who can number the clouds by wisdom? Or who can pour out the bottles of the heavens

38 p entru ca praful să se facă noroi şi bulgării de pământ să se lipească laolaltă?

When the dust to run into a mass and the clods to cleave fast together?

39 P oţi tu vâna prada pentru leoaică sau poţi să potoleşti pofta leilor tineri,

Can you hunt the prey for the lion? Or satisfy the appetite of the young lions

40 c ând stau ghemuiţi în viziunile lor sau când stau la pândă în culcuşul lor?

When they couch in their dens or lie in wait in their hiding place?

41 C ine pregăteşte corbului hrana, când puii lui strigă către Dumnezeu şi rătăcesc din lipsă de hrană?

Who provides for the raven its prey when its young ones cry to God and wander about for lack of food?
