1 W hen you sit down to eat with a ruler, consider who and what are before you;

2 F or you will put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to desire.

Pune-ţi un cuţit la gâtlej dacă eşti un om nesăţios!

3 B e not desirous of his dainties, for it is deceitful food.

Nu pofti delicatesele lui pentru că sunt o hrană înşelătoare!

4 W eary not yourself to be rich; cease from your own wisdom.

Nu te trudi să te îmbogăţeşti; fii înţelept să arăţi cumpătare!

5 W ill you set your eyes upon wealth, when it is gone? For riches certainly make themselves wings, like an eagle that flies toward the heavens.

Abia ţi-ai aruncat ochii asupra bogăţiei şi nu mai este, căci, în mod sigur, îi vor creşte aripi, şi va fugi spre ceruri ca un vultur!

6 E at not the bread of him who has a hard, grudging, and envious eye, neither desire his dainty foods;

Nu mânca pâinea zgârcitului şi nu pofti delicatesele lui,

7 F or as he thinks in his heart, so is he. As one who reckons, he says to you, eat and drink, yet his heart is not with you.

căci el este omul care întotdeauna se gândeşte la cost! „Mănâncă şi bea“, îţi spune el, dar inima lui nu este cu tine.

8 T he morsel which you have eaten you will vomit up, and your complimentary words will be wasted.

Vei vărsa bucăţica pe care ai mâncat-o şi-ţi vei irosi cuvintele tale plăcute.

9 S peak not in the ears of a fool, for he will despise the Wisdom of your words.

Nu vorbi unui prost, căci el va dispreţui înţelepciunea cuvintelor tale!

10 R emove not the ancient landmark and enter not into the fields of the fatherless,

Nu muta hotarul cel vechi şi nu intra pe ogorul orfanilor,

11 F or their Redeemer is mighty; He will plead their cause against you.

căci Apărătorul lor este puternic! El le va apăra cauza împotriva ta.

12 A pply your mind to instruction and correction and your ears to words of knowledge.

Apleacă-ţi inima spre învăţătură şi urechile la cuvintele cunoştinţei!

13 W ithhold not discipline from the child; for if you strike and punish him with the rod, he will not die.

Nu scuti copilul de disciplinare, căci dacă îl pedepseşti cu nuiaua, nu va muri!

14 Y ou shall whip him with the rod and deliver his life from Sheol (Hades, the place of the dead).

Dacă îl pedepseşti cu nuiaua, îi vei salva sufletul din Locuinţa Morţilor.

15 M y son, if your heart is wise, my heart will be glad, even mine;

Fiul meu, dacă inima ta este înţeleaptă, atunci inima mea se va bucura.

16 Y es, my heart will rejoice when your lips speak right things.

Lăuntrul fiinţei mele se va înveseli când buzele tale vor spune ce este drept.

17 L et not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord all the day long.

Nu-ţi lăsa inima să invidieze pe cei păcătoşi, ci să ai întotdeauna frică de Domnul!

18 F or surely there is a latter end, and your hope and expectation shall not be cut off.

Cu siguranţă există o răsplată viitoare şi nădejdea ta nu va fi tăiată!

19 H ear, my son, and be wise, and direct your mind in the way.

Ascultă, fiul meu, şi fii înţelept, păstrează-ţi inima pe cărarea dreaptă!

20 D o not associate with winebibbers; be not among them nor among gluttonous eaters of meat,

Nu fi printre cei care beau mult vin, nici printre cei ce se ghiftuiesc cu carne,

21 F or the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty, and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

căci beţivul şi mâncăul vor sărăci, iar somnolenţa îi va îmbrăca în zdrenţe!

22 H earken to your father, who begot you, and despise not your mother when she is old.

Ascultă de tatăl tău, care ţi-a dat viaţă şi nu-ţi dispreţui mama, când a îmbătrânit!

23 B uy the truth and sell it not; not only that, but also get discernment and judgment, instruction and understanding.

Cumpără adevărul şi nu-l vinde, dobândeşte înţelepciunea, învăţătura şi priceperea!

24 T he father of the righteous (the upright, in right standing with God) shall greatly rejoice, and he who becomes the father of a wise child shall have joy in him.

Tatăl celui drept va avea mari bucurii; cine are un fiu înţelept se bucură de el.

25 L et your father and your mother be glad, and let her who bore you rejoice.

Să se bucure tatăl tău şi mama ta, să se înveselească cea care te-a născut!

26 M y son, give me your heart and let your eyes observe and delight in my ways,

Fiul meu, dă-mi inima ta şi să găsească plăcere ochii tăi în căile mele,

27 F or a harlot is a deep ditch, and a loose woman is a narrow pit.

căci prostituata este o groapă adâncă şi femeia străină este o fântână îngustă.

28 S he also lies in wait as a robber or as one waits for prey, and she increases the treacherous among men.

Ea pândeşte ca un hoţ şi îi înmulţeşte pe cei necredincioşi între oameni.

29 W ho has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness and dimness of eyes?

Ale cui sunt vaiurile? Ale cui sunt oftările? Ale cui sunt certurile? Ale cui sunt plângerile? Ale cui sunt rănile fără motiv? Ai cui sunt ochii roşii?

30 T hose who tarry long at the wine, those who go to seek and try mixed wine.

Ale celor ce întârzie la vin şi care se duc să caute vasul cu vin amestecat.

31 D o not look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the wineglass, when it goes down smoothly.

Nu te uita la vin când este roşu, când spumegă în pahar şi când alunecă uşor!

32 A t the last it bites like a serpent and stings like an adder.

Căci la urmă muşcă ca un şarpe şi otrăveşte ca o viperă.

33 y our eyes will behold strange things and your mind will utter things turned the wrong way.

Ochii tăi vor vedea lucruri ciudate şi inima ta va vorbi lucruri stricate.

34 Y es, you will be as he who lies down in the midst of the sea, and as he who lies upon the top of a mast.

Vei fi ca un om culcat în mijlocul mării sau ca unul întins pe vârful unui catarg.

35 Y ou will say, They struck me, but I was not hurt! They beat me, but I did not feel it! When shall I awake? I will crave and seek more wine again.

„M-au lovit, dar nu m-au rănit! M-au bătut, dar nu simt nimic! Când mă voi trezi, pot găsi altceva de băut?“
