1 N ow Samuel died, and all the Israelites assembled and mourned for him, and buried him at his house in Ramah. David arose and went to the Wilderness of Paran.

Samuel murise. Tot Israelul s-a adunat şi l-a bocit, apoi l-au îngropat acasă la el, în Rama. După aceea, David a plecat în pustia Paran.

2 A very rich man was in Maon, whose possessions and business were in Carmel. He had 3, 000 sheep and 1, 000 goats, and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel.

În Maon trăia un bărbat a cărui avere era în Carmel. Era un om foarte bogat: avea trei mii de oi şi o mie de capre şi tocmai se afla în Carmel pentru a-şi tunde oile.

3 T he man’s name was Nabal and his wife’s name was Abigail; she was a woman of good understanding, and beautiful. But the man was rough and evil in his doings; he was a Calebite.

Numele lui era Nabal, iar numele soţiei lui era Abigail. Femeia era ageră la minte şi frumoasă, însă bărbatul era aspru şi rău în faptele lui; el era calebit.

4 D avid heard in the wilderness that Nabal was shearing his sheep.

În timp ce era în pustie, David a auzit că Nabal îşi tunde oile

5 A nd David sent out ten young men and said to, Go up to Carmel to Nabal and greet him in my name;

şi a trimis zece tineri, spunându-le: „Duceţi-vă la Carmel! Când ajungeţi la Nabal să-l salutaţi în numele meu,

6 A nd salute him thus: Peace be to you and to your house and to all that you have.

zicându-i: «Să trăieşti în pace tu, familia ta şi tot ceea ce este al tău!

7 I have heard that you have shearers. Now your shepherds have been with us and we did them no harm, and they missed nothing all the time they were in Carmel.

Am auzit că tunzi oile! Păstorii tăi au fost împreună cu noi, iar noi nu i-am jignit şi nimic din ce era al lor nu s-a pierdut în tot timpul cât au fost în Carmel.

8 A sk your young men and they will tell you. Therefore let my young men find favor in your sight, for we come at an opportune time. I pray you, give whatever you have at hand to your servants and to your son David.

Întreabă-ţi slujitorii şi îţi vor spune. Fie ca tinerii să găsească bunăvoinţă în ochii tăi pentru că venim într-o zi de bucurie. Acum dă-le, te rog, slujitorilor tăi şi fiului tău David, ceea ce ai la îndemână.»“

9 A nd when David’s young men came, they said all this to Nabal in the name of David, and then paused.

Tinerii lui David au venit la Nabal şi i-au spus toate aceste cuvinte în numele lui David, după care au aşteptat.

10 A nd Nabal answered David’s servants and said, Who is David? Who is the son of Jesse? There are many servants nowadays who are each breaking away from his master.

Nabal însă le-a răspuns tinerilor lui David: „Cine este David şi cine este fiul lui Işai? Astăzi sunt mulţi slujitori care fug de la stăpânii lor.

11 S hall I then take my bread and my water, and my meat that I have killed for my shearers, and give it to men when I do not know where they belong?

Să iau oare pâinea mea, apa mea şi carnea pe care am pregătit-o pentru cei ce-mi tund oile şi s-o dau unor oameni care sunt de nu ştiu unde?“

12 S o David’s young men turned away, and came and told him all that was said.

Tinerii lui David au făcut cale-ntoarsă şi i-au spus lui David toate aceste cuvinte.

13 A nd David said to his men, Every man gird on his sword. And they did so, and David also girded on his sword; and there went up after David about 400 men, and 200 remained with the baggage.

Atunci David le-a spus oamenilor săi: „Fiecare să-şi încingă sabia!“ Fiecare şi-a încins sabia. David şi-a încins şi el sabia şi după el au venit cam patru sute de bărbaţi, în timp ce două sute au rămas la bagaje.

14 B ut one of Nabal’s young men told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to salute our master, and he railed at them.

16 T hey were a wall to us night and day, all the time we were with them keeping the sheep.

17 S o know this and consider what you will do, for evil is determined against our master and all his house. For he is such a wicked man that one cannot speak to him.

Acum, gândeşte-te şi vezi ce ai de făcut, pentru că răul este hotărât împotriva stăpânului nostru şi împotriva întregii lui familii. El este un om atât de rău, încât nimeni nu poate să-i vorbească.“

18 T hen Abigail made haste and took 200 loaves, two skins of wine, five sheep already dressed, five measures of parched grain, 100 clusters of raisins, and 200 cakes of figs, and laid them on donkeys.

Abigail a luat în grabă o sută de pâini, două burdufuri de vin, cinci oi gata pregătite, cinci măsuri de grâne prăjite, o sută de ciorchini de stafide şi două sute de prăjituri din smochine şi le-a aşezat pe măgari.

19 A nd she said to her servants, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she did not tell her husband Nabal.

Apoi le-a spus slujitorilor ei: „Mergeţi înaintea mea, iar eu vă voi urma!“ Soţului ei, Nabal, nu i-a spus însă nimic.

20 A s she rode on her donkey, she came down hidden by the mountain, and behold, David and his men came down opposite her, and she met them.

În timp ce ea cobora, călare pe măgar, prin zona umbrită a muntelui, David şi oamenii lui tocmai veneau înspre ea, aşa că aceasta i-a întâlnit.

21 N ow David had said, Surely in vain have I protected all that this fellow has in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that belonged to him; and he has repaid me evil for good.

David zisese: „Degeaba am păzit în pustie tot ceea ce avea acest om, astfel încât nu i s-a pierdut nimic. El mi-a întors rău pentru bine.

22 M ay God do so, and more also, to David if I leave of all who belong to him one male alive by morning.

Dumnezeu să se poarte cu toată asprimea cu David dacă voi lăsa în viaţă, până dimineaţă, vreun bărbat dintre toţi cei ce sunt ai lui Nabal.“

23 W hen Abigail saw David, she hastened and lighted off the donkey, and fell before David on her face and did obeisance.

Când Abigail l-a văzut pe David, a descălecat repede de pe măgar, şi-a plecat faţa înaintea lui şi i s-a închinat până la pământ.

24 K neeling at his feet she said, Upon me alone let this guilt be, my lord. And let your handmaid, I pray you, speak in your presence, and hear the words of your handmaid.

Căzând la picioarele lui i-a zis: – Numai asupra mea să fie pedeapsa, stăpânul meu. Lasă, te rog, pe slujitoarea ta să-ţi vorbească şi ascultă cuvintele ei.

25 L et not my lord, I pray you, regard this foolish and wicked fellow Nabal, for as his name is, so is he—Nabal is his name, and folly is with him. But I, your handmaid, did not see my lord’s young men whom you sent.

Te rog, stăpânul meu, nu-ţi pune mintea cu acel om rău, care este Nabal, pentru că aşa cum îi este numele, aşa este şi el. Nabal îi este numele şi nebunia se ţine de el. Eu însă, slujitoarea ta, nu i-am văzut pe tinerii stăpânului meu, pe care tu i-ai trimis.

26 S o now, my lord, as the Lord lives and as your soul lives, seeing that the Lord has prevented you from bloodguiltiness and from avenging yourself with your own hand, now let your enemies and those who seek to do evil to my lord be as Nabal.

Acum, stăpânul meu, viu este Domnul şi viu este sufletul tău că Domnul te-a oprit de la vărsare de sânge şi de la răzbunare. Duşmanii tăi şi cei ce vor răul stăpânului meu să fie ca Nabal!

27 A nd now this gift, which your handmaid has brought my lord, let it be given to the young men who follow my lord.

Darul acesta, pe care l-a adus slujitoarea ta stăpânului meu, să fie dat tinerilor care-l urmează pe stăpânul meu.

28 F orgive, I pray you, the trespass of your handmaid, for the Lord will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord is fighting the Lord’s battles, and evil has not been found in you all your days.

Iartă, te rog, păcatul slujitoarei tale, căci Domnul, cu adevărat, îi va face stăpânului meu o dinastie trainică, deoarece stăpânul meu poartă războaiele Domnului. Să nu se găsească răutate în tine în toate zilele tale.

29 T hough man is risen up to pursue you and to seek your life, yet the life of my lord shall be bound in the living bundle with the Lord your God. And the lives of your enemies—them shall He sling out as out of the center of a sling.

Iar dacă vreun om se va ridica pentru a te urmări şi pentru a căuta să-ţi ia viaţa, viaţa stăpânului meu va fi legată în mănunchiul celor vii, la Domnul, Dumnezeul tău. În schimb, viaţa duşmanilor tăi El o va azvârli ca dintr-o praştie.

30 A nd when the Lord has done to my lord according to all the good that He has promised concerning you and has made you ruler over Israel,

Când Domnul îi va face stăpânului meu tot ceea ce a spus de bine cu privire la el şi îl va pune drept conducător peste Israel,

31 T his shall be no staggering grief to you or cause for pangs of conscience to my lord, either that you have shed blood without cause or that my lord has avenged himself. And when the Lord has dealt well with my lord, then '> earnestly] remember your handmaid.

să nu fie vărsarea de sânge şi răzbunarea o remuşcare sau o poticnire a inimii pentru stăpânul meu. Când Domnul îi va face bine stăpânului meu atunci să-ţi aduci aminte de slujitoarea ta.

32 A nd David said to Abigail, Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, Who sent you this day to meet me.

David i-a răspuns lui Abigail: – Binecuvântat să fie Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel, Care te-a trimis astăzi să mă întâlneşti.

33 A nd blessed be your discretion and advice, and blessed be you who have kept me today from bloodguiltiness and from avenging myself with my own hand.

Binecuvântată să fie judecata ta şi binecuvântată să fii tu, care m-ai oprit în această zi de la vărsare de sânge şi de la răzbunare.

34 F or as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, Who has prevented me from hurting you, if you had not hurried and come to meet me, surely by morning there would not have been left so much as one male to Nabal.

Viu este Domnul, Dumnezeul lui Israel, Care m-a oprit să-ţi fac rău, că dacă nu te-ai fi grăbit să vii în întâmpinarea mea, până în zorii dimineţii nu ar fi fost lăsat în viaţă nici un bărbat dintre cei ce sunt ai lui Nabal.

35 S o David accepted what she had brought him and said to her, Go up in peace to your house. See, I have hearkened to your voice and have granted your petition.

Apoi David a luat din mâna ei ceea ce ea îi adusese şi i-a zis: – Du-te în pace la casa ta! Să ştii că am ascultat de glasul tău şi că ţi-am împlinit cererea.

36 A nd Abigail came to Nabal, and behold, he was holding a feast in his house like the feast of a king. And heart was merry, for he was very drunk; so she told him nothing at all until the morning light.

Când Abigail a ajuns la Nabal, acesta dădea în casa sa un ospăţ, ca ospăţul unui rege. Inima lui Nabal era veselă şi el era foarte beat. Ea nu i-a spus nimic până în zorii dimineţii.

37 B ut in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife told him these things, his heart died within him and he became a stone.

Dimineaţa, când îi trecuse beţia lui Nabal, soţia lui i-a istorisit tot ce se întâmplase. Atunci inima lui Nabal a primit o lovitură de moarte şi el s-a făcut ca o piatră.

38 A nd about ten days after that, the Lord smote Nabal and he died.

Cam după zece zile Domnul l-a lovit pe Nabal, iar acesta a murit.

39 W hen David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the Lord, Who has pleaded the cause of my reproach at the hand of Nabal, and kept His servant from evil. For the Lord has returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and communed with Abigail, to take her to him as his wife.

Când David a auzit că Nabal a murit, a zis: – Binecuvântat să fie Domnul, Care mi-a apărat cauza în ocara pe care mi-a adus-o Nabal şi l-a oprit pe robul Său de la a face rău. Domnul a făcut ca răutatea lui Nabal să se întoarcă împotriva capului său. Apoi David i-a dat de veste lui Abigail că vrea s-o ia de soţie.

40 A nd when the servants of David had come to Abigail at Carmel, they said to her, David sent us to you to take you to him to be his wife.

Când slujitorii lui David au ajuns la Abigail, la Carmel, i-au zis: – David ne-a trimis la tine ca să te luăm pentru a-i fi soţie.

41 A nd she arose and bowed herself to the earth and said, Behold, let your handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.

Atunci ea s-a sculat şi s-a prosternat cu faţa la pământ, zicând: – Iată, slujitoarea ta este gata să spele picioarele slujitorilor stăpânului meu.

42 A nd Abigail hastened and arose and rode on a donkey, with five of her maids who followed her, and she went after the messengers of David and became his wife.

Apoi Abigail s-a sculat repede, a încălecat pe un măgar şi a plecat împreună cu cinci slujitoare ale sale. I-a urmat pe oamenii lui David şi a devenit soţia acestuia;

43 D avid also took Ahinoam of Jezreel, and they both became his wives.

David îşi luase de soţie şi pe Ahinoam din Izreel, astfel că amândouă au devenit soţiile lui.

44 S aul had given Michal his daughter, David’s wife, to Phalti son of Laish, who was of Gallim.

Saul a dat-o pe fiica sa Mihal, care era soţia lui David, lui Paltiel, fiul lui Laiş, care era din Galim.
