1 D avid numbered the men who were with him and set over them commanders of thousands and of hundreds.

David a numărat oştirea care se afla cu el şi a numit căpetenii peste mii şi căpetenii peste sute.

2 D avid sent forth the army, a third under command of Joab, a third under Abishai son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and a third under Ittai the Gittite. told the men, I myself will go out with you also.

A pus o treime din oştire sub comanda lui Ioab, o altă treime sub comanda lui Abişai, fiul Ţeruiei şi fratele lui Ioab, iar cealaltă treime a pus-o sub comanda ghititului Itai. Apoi le-a zis oamenilor: – Bineînţeles că voi veni şi eu cu voi.

3 B ut the men said, You shall not go out. For if we flee, they will not care about us; if half of us die, they will not care about us. But you are worth 10, 000 such as we are. So now it is better that you be able to help us from the city.

– Să nu ieşi! i-au răspuns cei din oştire. Dacă noi vom fugi, duşmanilor nu le va păsa atât de mult de noi şi chiar dacă jumătate dintre noi ar muri, nici chiar atunci nu le va păsa de noi. Tu însă faci cât zece mii dintre noi. Prin urmare, ar fi mai bine să ne sprijini din cetate.

4 T he king said to them, Whatever seems best to you I will do. So he stood beside the gate, and all the army came out by hundreds and by thousands.

– Voi face cum credeţi voi că este mai bine, le-a răspuns regele. Apoi regele a stat lângă poartă, în timp ce toată oştirea ieşea cu sutele şi miile.

5 T he king commanded Joab, Abishai, and Ittai, saying, Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave orders to all the commanders about Absalom.

Regele le-a poruncit lui Ioab, lui Abişai şi lui Itai: „De dragul meu, purtaţi-vă blând cu tânărul Absalom!“ Şi întreaga oştire a auzit această poruncă, pe care regele a dat-o fiecărui conducător cu privire la Absalom.

6 S o the army went out into the field against Israel, and the battle was fought in the forest of Ephraim.

Oştirea a ieşit în câmp ca să lupte împotriva lui Israel, iar lupta s-a dat în pădurea lui Efraim.

7 m en of Israel were defeated by the servants of David, and there was a great slaughter that day of 20, 000 men.

Oştirea lui Israel a fost învinsă acolo de slujitorii lui David. A avut loc acolo un mare măcel în acea zi – douăzeci de mii de oameni au fost ucişi.

8 F or the battle spread over the face of all the country, and the forest devoured more men that day than did the sword.

Lupta s-a întins pe întreg teritoriul şi în ziua aceea, pădurea a mistuit mai mulţi oameni decât a mistuit sabia.

9 T hen Absalom met the servants of David. Absalom rode on a mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and Absalom’s head caught fast of the oak; and the mule under him ran away, leaving him hanging between the heavens and the earth.

Absalom, călare pe un catâr, s-a pomenit deodată în faţa slujitorilor lui David. Încercând să scape, a intrat cu catârul pe sub ramurile încâlcite ale unui stejar mare. Capul lui Absalom s-a prins însă între ramurile stejarului şi el a rămas astfel atârnat între cer şi pământ, în timp ce catârul său a plecat mai departe.

10 A certain man saw it and told Joab, Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak.

Unul dintre luptători a văzut acest lucru şi i-a spus lui Ioab: – L-am văzut pe Absalom, atârnând de un stejar.

11 J oab said to the man, You saw him! Why did you not strike him down to the ground? I would have given you ten shekels of silver and a girdle.

– Cum? L-ai văzut? Atunci de ce nu l-ai ucis acolo, pe loc? l-a întrebat Ioab. Ţi-aş fi dat zece şecheli de argint şi o cingătoare.

12 T he man told Joab, Though I should receive 1, 000 pieces of silver, yet I would not put forth my hand against the king’s son. For in our hearing the king charged you, Abishai, and Ittai, Have a care, whoever you be, for the young man Absalom.

– Chiar dacă aş cântări în mâna mea o mie de şecheli de argint, n-aş ridica mâna împotriva fiului regelui, i-a răspuns omul acela lui Ioab. Căci în auzul nostru v-a poruncit regele atât ţie, cât şi lui Abişai şi lui Itai, să aveţi grijă să nu i se întâmple vreun rău tânărului Absalom.

13 O therwise, if I had dealt falsely against his life—for nothing is hidden from the king—you yourself would have taken sides against me.

Dacă l-aş fi ucis mişeleşte, acest lucru n-ar fi rămas necunoscut de către rege iar tu nu mi-ai fi luat apărarea.

14 J oab said, I will not tarry thus with you. He took three darts in his hand and thrust them into the body of Absalom while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.

– Nu am timp de pierdut cu tine, i-a răspuns Ioab. A luat trei suliţe şi le-a înfipt în pieptul lui Absalom, în timp ce acesta era încă viu, prins între ramurile stejarului.

15 A nd ten young men, Joab’s armor-bearers, surrounded and struck Absalom and killed him.

Zece tineri, care duceau armele lui Ioab, l-au înconjurat după aceea pe Absalom, l-au lovit şi l-au omorât.

16 T hen Joab blew the trumpet, and the troops returned from pursuing Israel, for Joab restrained and spared them.

Ioab a suflat apoi din corn şi oştirea s-a întors de la urmărirea israeliţilor, chemată fiind de Ioab.

17 T hey took Absalom and cast him into a great pit in the forest and raised a very great heap of stones upon him. And all Israel fled, everyone to his own home.

L-au luat pe Absalom, l-au aruncat în pădure, într-o groapă mare, şi au aruncat peste el un morman foarte mare de pietre. Israeliţii au fugit fiecare acasă.

18 N ow Absalom in his lifetime had reared up for himself a pillar which is in the King’s Valley, for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance. He called the pillar after his own name, and to this day it is called Absalom’s Monument.

Pe când trăia, Absalom îşi ridicase un monument în Valea Regelui, pentru că nu avea nici un fiu care să-i poarte mai departe amintirea numelui. A dat monumentului propriul său nume şi, chiar până în ziua de astăzi, acesta se numeşte „Monumentul lui Absalom“. Vestea morţii lui Absalom

19 T hen said Ahimaaz son of Zadok, Let me now run and bear the king tidings of how the Lord has avenged David of his enemies.

Ahimaaţ, fiul lui Ţadok, i-a zis lui Ioab: – Lasă-mă să alerg şi să-i duc regelui vestea cea bună că Domnul l-a izbăvit din mâna duşmanilor săi.

20 J oab told him, You shall not carry news today, but another time. Today you shall bear no news, for the king’s son is dead.

– Nu tu vei duce veştile astăzi! Tu vei duce altă dată veştile; astăzi însă nu vei duce tu veştile, pentru că a murit fiul regelui, i-a răspuns Ioab.

21 T hen said Joab to the Cushite, Go tell the king what you have seen. And the Cushite bowed to Joab and ran.

Apoi i-a poruncit unui cuşit: – Du-te şi vesteşte-i regelui ce ai văzut. Cuşitul s-a închinat înaintea lui Ioab şi a luat-o la fugă.

22 T hen said Ahimaaz son of Zadok again to Joab, But anyhow, let me, I pray you, also run after the Cushite. Joab said, Why should you run, my son, seeing you will have no reward, for you have not sufficient tidings?

Ahimaaţ, fiul lui Ţadok, i-a zis din nou lui Ioab: – Orice s-ar întâmpla, lasă-mă şi pe mine să alerg după cuşit. – Fiule, de ce vrei să alergi? l-a întrebat Ioab. Nu sunt nişte veşti pentru care să fii răsplătit.

23 B ut he said, Let me run anyhow. So Joab said to him, Run. Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the plain and outran the Cushite.

– Orice s-ar întâmpla, vreau să alerg, i-a zis Ahimaaţ. – Bine, i-a spus Ioab, aleargă. Ahimaaţ a alergat pe drumul care traversează Araba şi l-a întrecut pe cuşit.

24 N ow David was sitting between the two gates; and the watchman went up to the roof over the gate by the wall, and when he looked, he saw a man running alone.

În timp ce David se afla undeva între cele două porţi, străjerul s-a urcat pe acoperişul porţii, înspre zid şi, uitându-se, a zărit un om singur care alerga.

25 T he watchman called out and told the king. The king said, If he is alone, he has news to tell. And he came on and drew near.

L-a strigat pe rege şi i-a spus acest lucru. Regele a zis: – Dacă este singur înseamnă că aduce veşti. Omul se apropia din ce în ce mai mult.

26 T hen the watchman saw another man running, and the watchman called to the gatekeeper, Behold, another man running alone. The king said, He also brings news.

La un moment dat, străjerul a zărit un alt om care alerga şi a strigat către portar: – Văd un alt om singur care aleargă. – Şi el aduce veşti, a zis regele.

27 T he watchman said, I think the man in front runs like Ahimaaz son of Zadok. The king said, He is a good man and comes with good tidings.

– Felul de alergare al celui dintâi pare a fi cel al lui Ahimaaţ, fiul lui Ţadok, a spus străjerul. – Înseamnă că aduce veşti bune, a zis regele, deoarece acesta este un om bun.

28 A nd Ahimaaz called and said to the king, All is well! And he fell down to the ground on his face before the king and said, Blessed be the Lord your God, Who has shut up the men who lifted up their hands against my lord the king.

Ahimaaţ i-a strigat regelui: – Totul este bine! Apoi s-a închinat cu faţa la pământ înaintea lui şi i-a zis: – Binecuvântat să fie Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, Care i-a dat în mâinile noastre pe cei ce se răzvrătiseră împotriva stăpânului meu, regele.

29 T he king said, Is the young man Absalom safe? Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king’s servant and me, your servant, I saw a great tumult, but I do not know what it was.

– Tânărul Absalom este bine? a întrebat regele. – Slujitorul tău a văzut o mare învălmăşeală, atunci când a fost trimis de Ioab, dar nu ştie despre ce era vorba, a răspuns Ahimaaţ.

30 T he king told him, Turn aside; stand here. And he turned aside and stood still.

– Aşteaptă puţin deoparte, i-a zis regele. Ahimaaţ a stat deoparte.

31 A nd behold, the Cushite (Ethiopian) came, and he said, News, my lord the king! For the Lord has delivered you this day from all who rose up against you.

Îndată a sosit şi cuşitul, care a zis: – Am veşti bune pentru stăpânul meu, regele. Domnul te-a izbăvit astăzi din mâna tuturor celor ce se ridicaseră împotriva ta.

32 T he king said to the Cushite, Is the young man Absalom safe? The Cushite replied, May the enemies of my lord the king and all who rise against you to do evil be like that young man is.

– Tânărul Absalom este bine? l-a întrebat regele. – Ca acest tânăr să fie toţi duşmanii stăpânului meu, regele, şi toţi cei ce se ridică împotriva ta ca să-ţi facă vreun rău, i-a răspuns cuşitul. David îl plânge pe Absalom

33 A nd the king was deeply moved and went up to the chamber over the gate and wept. And as he went, he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would to God I had died for you, O Absalom, my son, my son!

Atunci regele, cutremurându-se, s-a dus în încăperea care se afla deasupra porţii şi a început să plângă. În timp ce mergea, el spunea: „O, fiul meu Absalom! O, fiul meu, fiul meu Absalom! De ce n-am murit eu în locul tău? O, Absalom, fiul meu, fiul meu!“
