When you sit down to eat with a ruler, consider who and what are before you;

For you will put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to desire.

Be not desirous of his dainties, for it is deceitful food.

4 Н е се старай да придобиеш богатство, Остави се от тая си мисъл.

Weary not yourself to be rich; cease from your own wisdom.

5 Х върляш ли на него очите си, - то го няма! Защото наистина богатството си прави крила, Както орел ще лети към небето.

Will you set your eyes upon wealth, when it is gone? For riches certainly make themselves wings, like an eagle that flies toward the heavens.

6 Н е яж хляба на онзи, който има лошо око, Нито пожелавай вкусните му ястия,

Eat not the bread of him who has a hard, grudging, and envious eye, neither desire his dainty foods;

7 З ащото, каквито са мислите в душата му - такъв е и той. Каза ти: Яж и пий, Но сърцето му не е с тебе.

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. As one who reckons, he says to you, eat and drink, yet his heart is not with you.

8 З алъка, който си изял, ще избълваш, И ще изгубиш сладките си думи.

The morsel which you have eaten you will vomit up, and your complimentary words will be wasted.

9 Н е говори на ушите на безумния, Защото той ще презре разумността на думите ти.

Speak not in the ears of a fool, for he will despise the Wisdom of your words.

10 Н е премествай стари межди, Нито влизай в нивите на сирачетата,

Remove not the ancient landmark and enter not into the fields of the fatherless,

11 З ащото Изкупителят им е мощен; Той ще защити делото им против тебе.

For their Redeemer is mighty; He will plead their cause against you.

12 П редай сърцето си на поука И ушите си към думи на знание.

Apply your mind to instruction and correction and your ears to words of knowledge.

13 Д а не ти се свиди да наказваш детето, Защото, ако и да го биеш с пръчка, то няма да умре.

Withhold not discipline from the child; for if you strike and punish him with the rod, he will not die.

14 Т и, като го биеш с пръчката, Ще избавиш душата му от ада.

You shall whip him with the rod and deliver his life from Sheol (Hades, the place of the dead).

15 С ине мой, ако бъде сърцето ти мъдро, То и на моето сърце ще е драго.

My son, if your heart is wise, my heart will be glad, even mine;

16 Д а! сърцето ми ще се радва, Когато устните ти изговарят правото

Yes, my heart will rejoice when your lips speak right things.

17 С ърцето ти да не завижда на грешните, Но да пребъдва в страх от Господа цял ден,

Let not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord all the day long.

18 З ащото наистина има бъдеще, И надеждата ти няма да се отсече.

For surely there is a latter end, and your hope and expectation shall not be cut off.

19 Т и, сине мой, слушай и бъди мъдър, И оправяй сърцето си в пътя,

Hear, my son, and be wise, and direct your mind in the way.

20 Н е бъди между винопийци, Между невъздържани месоядци,

Do not associate with winebibbers; be not among them nor among gluttonous eaters of meat,

21 З ащото пияницата и чревоугодникът ще осиромашеят, И дремливостта ще облече човек в дрипи.

For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty, and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

22 С лушай баща си, който те е родил, И не презирай майка си, когато остарее.

Hearken to your father, who begot you, and despise not your mother when she is old.

23 К упувай истината и не я продавай, Тоже и мъдростта, поуката и разума.

Buy the truth and sell it not; not only that, but also get discernment and judgment, instruction and understanding.

24 Б ащата на праведния ще се радва много, И който ражда мъдро чадо ще има радост от него.

The father of the righteous (the upright, in right standing with God) shall greatly rejoice, and he who becomes the father of a wise child shall have joy in him.

25 П рочее, нека се веселят твоят баща и твоята майка, И да се възхищава оная, която те е родила.

Let your father and your mother be glad, and let her who bore you rejoice.

26 С ине мой, дай сърцето си на мене, И очите ти нека внимават в моите пътища,

My son, give me your heart and let your eyes observe and delight in my ways,

27 З ащото блудницата е дълбока яма, И чуждата жена е тесен ров.

For a harlot is a deep ditch, and a loose woman is a narrow pit.

28 Д а! тя причаква като зла плячка, И умножава числото на неверните между човеците.

She also lies in wait as a robber or as one waits for prey, and she increases the treacherous among men.

29 К ому горко? кому скръб? кому каране? Кому оплакване? кому удари без причина? Кому подпухнали очи? -

Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaining? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness and dimness of eyes?

30 Н а ония, които се бавят около виното, Които отиват да вкусят подправено вино.

Those who tarry long at the wine, those who go to seek and try mixed wine.

31 Н е гледай виното, че е червено, Че показва цвета си в чашата, Че се поглъща гладко,

Do not look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the wineglass, when it goes down smoothly.

32 З ащото после то хапе като змия, И жили като ехидна.

At the last it bites like a serpent and stings like an adder.

33 О чите ти ще гледат чужди жени, И сърцето ти ще изригва развратни неща;

your eyes will behold strange things and your mind will utter things turned the wrong way.

34 Д аже ще бъдеш като един, който би легнал всред море, Или като един, който би лежал на върха на мачта.

Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the midst of the sea, and as he who lies upon the top of a mast.

35 У дариха ме ще речеш, и не ме заболя; Биха ме, и не усетих. Кога ще се събудя за да го търся пак?

You will say, They struck me, but I was not hurt! They beat me, but I did not feel it! When shall I awake? I will crave and seek more wine again.
