1 A u trecut multe zile, iar Domnul i-a vorbit lui Ilie în al treilea an astfel: „Du-te şi înfăţişează-te înaintea lui Ahab, căci voi trimite ploaie pe pământ.“

After many days, the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go show yourself to Ahab. And I will send rain upon the earth.”

2 I lie s-a dus să se înfăţişeze înaintea lui Ahab. În Samaria era foamete mare.

So Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. Now the time without food was very hard in Samaria.

3 A hab l-a chemat pe Obadia, cel care răspundea de palat. Obadia se temea mult de Domnul,

And Ahab called Obadiah who was the boss over his house. (Now Obadiah had much fear of the Lord.

4 i ar când Izabela i-a omorât pe profeţii Domnului, Obadia a luat o sută de profeţi, a ascuns câte cincizeci în câte o peşteră şi i-a hrănit cu pâine şi cu apă.

For when Jezebel destroyed the men who spoke for the Lord, Obadiah took 100 of these men and hid them by fifties in a cave. And he fed them with bread and water.)

5 A hab i-a zis lui Obadia: „Du-te prin ţară, pe la toate izvoarele de apă şi pe la toate uedurile! Poate că vom găsi iarbă ca să păstrăm caii şi catârii în viaţă, astfel încât să nu trebuiască să omorâm nici unul dintre animale.“

Then Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the wells of water and to all the valleys. It may be that we will find grass and keep the horses and donkeys alive, and not lose some of the animals.

6 A poi şi-au împărţit între ei teritoriul pe care urmau să-l străbată: Ahab a plecat singur pe un drum, iar Obadia a plecat singur pe un alt drum.

So they divided the land between them to pass through it. Ahab went one way by himself. And Obadiah went another way by himself.

7 Î n timp ce era pe drum, Obadia s-a întâlnit cu Ilie. El l-a recunoscut, a căzut cu faţa la pământ şi l-a întrebat: – Tu eşti, stăpânul meu Ilie?

As Obadiah was on the way, Elijah met him. Obadiah knew who he was, and fell on his face and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?”

8 – Eu sunt, i-a răspuns el. Du-te şi spune-i stăpânului tău că a venit Ilie!

He answered, “It is I. Go and tell your owner, ‘See, Elijah is here.’”

9 – Cu ce am păcătuit, a întrebat Obadia, de-l dai pe slujitorul tău pe mâna lui Ahab ca să fie omorât?

Obadiah said, “What sin have I done? Why are you giving your servant into the hand of Ahab to be killed?

10 V iu este Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, că n-a rămas nici un neam şi nici un regat unde stăpânul meu să nu fi trimis să te caute; iar când spuneau că nu eşti acolo, punea acel regat sau acel neam să jure că nu te-a găsit.

As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation where the king has not sent men to look for you. And when they said, ‘He is not here,’ he made the nation prove that they could not find you.

11 Ş i tu-mi ceri să merg şi să-i spun stăpânului meu că a venit Ilie.

Now you are saying, ‘Go, say to your owner, “See, Elijah is here.” ‘

12 Ş tiu eu oare unde te va duce Duhul Domnului după ce mă voi despărţi de tine? Astfel, dacă mă duc şi-i spun lui Ahab, iar el nu te va găsi, mă va omorî; însă slujitorul tău se teme de Domnul din tinereţea lui.

And after I have left you, the Spirit of the Lord will carry you where I do not know. So I will go and tell Ahab, and he will not be able to find you. Then he will kill me. But I your servant have honored the Lord since I was young.

13 N u i s-a spus stăpânului meu ce am făcut când Izabela îi omora pe profeţii Domnului ? Am ascuns o sută dintre profeţii Domnului, câte cincizeci în câte o peşteră, şi i-am hrănit cu pâine şi cu apă.

Have you not been told what I did when Jezebel killed the men who spoke for the Lord? I hid 100 men of the Lord by fifties in a cave. And I gave them bread and water.

14 I ar tu-mi ceri să merg şi să-i spun stăpânului meu că a venit Ilie. Mă va omorî!

Now you are saying, ‘Go and tell your owner, “See, Elijah is here.”’ He will kill me.”

15 – Viu este Domnul Oştirilor, Căruia Îi slujesc, i-a spus Ilie, că astăzi mă voi înfăţişa înaintea lui Ahab.

Elijah said, “As the Lord of All lives, before Whom I stand, I will show myself to Ahab today.”

16 O badia a pornit să-l întâmpine pe Ahab şi să-l înştiinţeze. Apoi Ahab s-a dus să-l întâlnească pe Ilie.

So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.

17 C ând Ahab l-a văzut pe Ilie, i-a zis: – Tu eşti acela, cel care-l nenoroceşti pe Israel?

When he saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is it you, the one who brings trouble to Israel?”

18 – Nu eu l-am nenorocit pe Israel, i-a răspuns Ilie, ci tu şi familia tatălui tău, prin faptul că aţi părăsit poruncile Domnului şi l-aţi urmat pe Baal.

Elijah said, “I have not brought trouble to Israel. But you and your father’s house have. Because you have turned away from the laws of the Lord, and have followed the false gods of Baal.

19 S trânge acum pe tot Israelul la mine, pe muntele Carmel, pe cei patru sute cincizeci de profeţi ai lui Baal şi pe cei patru sute de profeţi ai Aşerei, care mănâncă la masa Izabelei.

So now call together all Israel to me at Mount Carmel. And gather together 450 men who speak for Baal and 400 men who speak for the false goddess Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.” Elijah on Mount Carmel

20 A hab a trimis după toţi israeliţii şi i-a strâns pe profeţi la muntele Carmel.

So Ahab sent news among all the people of Israel. And he brought the men who speak for the false gods together at Mount Carmel.

21 A tunci Ilie s-a apropiat de tot poporul şi a zis: – Până când veţi mai şovăi între două convingeri? Dacă Domnul este Dumnezeu, urmaţi-L pe El, iar dacă Baal este Dumnezeu, urmaţi-l pe acesta! Poporul nu i-a răspuns nimic.

Elijah came near all the people and said, “How long will you be divided between two ways of thinking? If the Lord is God, follow Him. But if Baal is God, then follow him.” But the people did not answer him a word.

22 A poi Ilie a zis poporului: – Eu sunt singurul care am rămas dintre profeţii Domnului, iar profeţii lui Baal sunt în număr de patru sute cincizeci.

Then Elijah said to the people, “I am the only man left who speaks for God. But here are 450 men who speak for Baal.

23 S ă ni se dea doi tauri. Ei să-şi aleagă un taur, să-l taie în bucăţi şi să-l aşeze pe lemnele de pe altar, dar să nu-i dea foc. Iar eu voi pregăti celălalt taur şi-l voi aşeza pe lemne, dar nu-i voi da foc.

Bring two bulls to us. Let them choose one bull for themselves and cut it up and put it on the wood. But put no fire under it. I will make the other bull ready and lay it on the wood. And I will put no fire under it.

24 A poi, voi să chemaţi numele dumnezeului vostru, iar eu voi chema Numele Domnului. Dumnezeul care va răspunde prin foc, Acela este adevăratul Dumnezeu. – Bine, a răspuns tot poporul.

Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The God Who answers by fire, He is God.” All the people answered and said, “That is a good idea.”

25 I lie le-a zis profeţilor lui Baal: „Alegeţi-vă un taur şi pregătiţi-l voi mai întâi, pentru că sunteţi mai mulţi; apoi chemaţi numele dumnezeului vostru, dar să nu aprindeţi voi focul.“

So Elijah said to the men who spoke for Baal, “Choose one bull for yourselves and make it ready first. For there are many of you. Then call on the name of your god, but put no fire under it.”

26 E i au luat taurul dat lor şi l-au pregătit; apoi au chemat numele lui Baal de dimineaţa până la amiază, zicând: „ Baal, răspunde-ne!“ Dar nu s-a auzit nici un glas. Nimeni n-a răspuns, deşi ei săreau în jurul altarului pe care-l construiseră.

So they took the bull which was given to them and made it ready. Then they called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, “O Baal, answer us.” But there was no voice. No one answered. They jumped and danced around the altar they had made.

27 L a amiază, Ilie şi-a bătut joc de ei, zicând: „Strigaţi mai tare, doar este dumnezeu! Poate că meditează sau este ocupat sau se află în călătorie; poate că doarme şi se va trezi.“

At noon Elijah made fun of them. He said, “Call out with a loud voice, for he is a god. It might be that he is in deep thought or has turned away. He could be away traveling. Or it may be that he is asleep and needs to have someone wake him.”

28 E i au strigat mai tare şi, după obiceiul lor, şi-au făcut tăieturi cu săbiile şi cu suliţele până a început să le curgă sângele pe ei.

So they cried with a loud voice. They cut themselves as they had done in the past, with swords and spears until blood poured out on them.

29 D upă ce a trecut amiaza, ei şi-au continuat invocarea până când se aducea jertfa de seară, dar nu s-a auzit nici un glas, nici un răspuns, nici un semn.

When noon passed, they cried out until the time for giving the evening gift. But there was no voice. No one answered. No one listened.

30 A tunci Ilie a zis întregului popor: – Apropiaţi-vă de mine! Şi tot poporul s-a apropiat de el. Apoi el a refăcut altarul Domnului, care fusese distrus.

Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” So all the people came near to him. And he built again the altar of the Lord which had been torn down.

31 I lie a luat douăsprezece pietre, după numărul seminţiilor urmaşilor lui Iacov, cel căruia Domnul îi vorbise zicând: „Numele tău va fi Israel!“

Then Elijah took twelve stones, by the number of the families of Jacob’s sons. The word of the Lord had come to Jacob’s sons, saying, “Israel will be your name.”

32 C u aceste pietre, el a zidit un altar în Numele Domnului. A săpat şi un şanţ în jurul altarului, în care încăpeau două măsuri de sămânţă.

With the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord. And he made a ditch around the altar, big enough to hold twenty-two jars of seed.

33 A aranjat lemnele, a tăiat taurul în bucăţi şi l-a aşezat pe altar, deasupra lemnelor.

Then he set the wood in place. He cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. And he said, “Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt gift and on the wood.”

34 A poi le-a zis: – Umpleţi patru ulcioare cu apă şi goliţi-le peste arderea de tot şi peste lemne! Faceţi lucrul acesta încă o dată! a zis el. Şi ei l-au făcut încă o dată. Faceţi lucrul acesta şi a treia oară! Iar ei l-au făcut şi a treia oară.

Then he said, “Do it a second time.” And they did it a second time. He said, “Do it a third time.” And they did it a third time.

35 A pa curgea în jurul altarului şi a umplut chiar şi şanţul.

The water flowed around the altar, and filled the ditch also.

36 Î n clipa în care se aducea jertfa de seară, profetul Ilie s-a apropiat şi a zis: „ Doamne, Dumnezeul lui Avraam, Isaac şi Israel, fă să se cunoască astăzi că Tu eşti Dumnezeu în Israel, că eu sunt robul Tău şi că am făcut toate aceste lucruri după porunca Ta.

Then the time came for giving the evening gift. Elijah the man who spoke for God came near and said, “O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that You are God in Israel. Let it be known that I am Your servant, and have done all these things at Your word.

37 R ăspunde-mi, Doamne! Răspunde-mi, ca să cunoască acest popor că Tu, Doamne, eşti Dumnezeu şi că Tu le întorci inimile spre Tine! “

Answer me, O Lord. Answer me so these people may know that You, O Lord, are God. Turn their hearts to You again.”

38 A tunci a căzut foc de la Domnul, a mistuit arderea de tot, lemnele, pietrele şi pământul şi a înghiţit şi apa care era în şanţ.

Then the fire of the Lord fell. It burned up the burnt gift, the wood, the stones and the dust. And it picked up the water that was in the ditch.

39 C ând tot poporul a văzut acest lucru, a căzut cu faţa la pământ şi a zis: „ Domnul este Dumnezeu! Domnul este Dumnezeu!“

All the people fell on their faces when they saw it. They said, “The Lord, He is God. The Lord, He is God.”

40 – Prindeţi-i pe profeţii lui Baal! le-a zis Ilie. Nici unul dintre ei să nu scape! I-au prins, iar Ilie i-a dus la uedul Chişon şi i-a înjunghiat acolo.

Then Elijah said to them, “Take hold of the men who speak for Baal. Do not let one of them get away.” So they took hold of them. And Elijah brought them down to the river Kishon, and killed them there. The Rains Come

41 A poi Ilie i-a zis lui Ahab: – Du-te, mănâncă şi bea, căci se aude vuietul unei ploi puternice!

Then Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink. For there is the sound of much rain.”

42 A hab s-a dus să mănânce şi să bea, dar Ilie s-a suit pe vârful Carmelului, s-a plecat la pământ, şi-a aşezat faţa între genunchi

So Ahab went up to eat and drink. But Elijah went up to the top of Carmel. He got down on the ground and put his face between his knees.

43 ş i i-a zis slujitorului său: – Du-te şi uită-te spre mare! El s-a dus şi s-a uitat. – Nu se vede nimic! i-a zis el. Ilie i-a zis de şapte ori să se ducă din nou.

And he said to his servant, “Go up now and look toward the sea.” So he went up and looked and said, “There is nothing.” Seven times Elijah said, “Go again.”

44 A şaptea oară, slujitorul i-a zis: – Un nor mic cât o palmă de om se ridică din mare! – Du-te, i-a zis Ilie, şi spune-i lui Ahab: „Pregăteşte-ţi carul şi coboară-te ca să nu te prindă ploaia!“

The seventh time, he said, “I see a cloud as small as a man’s hand coming up from the sea.” Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Make your war-wagon ready and go down, so that the rain does not stop you.’”

45 Î ntre timp cerul s-a înnegrit de nori, vântul a început să bată şi a venit o ploaie puternică. Ahab s-a urcat în car şi s-a dus la Izreel.

Soon the sky became black with clouds and wind, and there was much rain. And Ahab went to Jezreel.

46 M âna Domnului a venit peste Ilie, care şi-a încins mijlocul şi a alergat înaintea lui Ahab până la intrarea în Izreel.

Then the hand of the Lord was on Elijah. He pulled his clothing up under his belt and ran before Ahab to Jezreel.
