1 E l tiempo pasó, y tres años después la palabra del Señor vino a Elías y le dijo: «Ve y preséntate ante Ajab. Voy a hacer que llueva sobre la tierra.»

After many days, the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go show yourself to Ahab. And I will send rain upon the earth.”

2 E lías se puso en marcha para hablar con Ajab. El hambre que azotaba a Samaria era terrible.

So Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. Now the time without food was very hard in Samaria.

3 E se día el rey llamó a Abdías, su administrador. Abdías era un hombre profundamente temeroso del Señor,

And Ahab called Obadiah who was the boss over his house. (Now Obadiah had much fear of the Lord.

4 p ues cuando Jezabel mandó matar a los profetas del Señor, Abdías salvó a cien de ellos; formó dos grupos de cincuenta profetas, y los escondió en cuevas y les proveyó pan y agua.

For when Jezebel destroyed the men who spoke for the Lord, Obadiah took 100 of these men and hid them by fifties in a cave. And he fed them with bread and water.)

5 A jab le dijo a Abdías: «Ve a recorrer todo el país. Busca manantiales con agua, y arroyos. Tal vez encontremos un poco de pasto para mantener vivos a los caballos y a las mulas. De lo contrario, nos quedaremos sin bestias.»

Then Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go through the land to all the wells of water and to all the valleys. It may be that we will find grass and keep the horses and donkeys alive, and not lose some of the animals.

6 P ara recorrer el país, lo dividieron en dos partes; Ajab se fue por un lado, y Abdías se fue por otro.

So they divided the land between them to pass through it. Ahab went one way by himself. And Obadiah went another way by himself.

7 E n el camino, Abdías se encontró con Elías y, cuando lo reconoció, se inclinó de cara al suelo y le preguntó: «¿Acaso no eres tú mi señor Elías?»

As Obadiah was on the way, Elijah met him. Obadiah knew who he was, and fell on his face and said, “Is it you, my lord Elijah?”

8 Y Elías respondió: «Sí, yo soy Elías. Ve y dile a tu amo que aquí estoy.»

He answered, “It is I. Go and tell your owner, ‘See, Elijah is here.’”

9 P ero Abdías le preguntó: «¿Cuál es mi pecado? ¿Por qué quieres entregar a este siervo tuyo? Si caigo en manos de Ajab, ¡me matará!

Obadiah said, “What sin have I done? Why are you giving your servant into the hand of Ahab to be killed?

10 T e juro por el Señor, tu Dios, que mi amo no ha dejado de buscarte por todos los reinos y naciones, pero siempre le dicen que allí no estás. Y Ajab los ha obligado a jurar que en verdad no te han visto.

As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation where the king has not sent men to look for you. And when they said, ‘He is not here,’ he made the nation prove that they could not find you.

11 ¡ Y ahora vienes tú y me ordenas que vaya y le diga al rey: “¡Aquí está Elías!”

Now you are saying, ‘Go, say to your owner, “See, Elijah is here.” ‘

12 ¿ Sabes qué va a pasar? Que cuando yo vaya y le dé la noticia al rey, el espíritu del Señor te llevará a otro lugar que yo no conozca; y cuando el rey venga a buscarte, si no te halla, ¡seguramente me matará! Este siervo tuyo teme al Señor desde que era joven.

And after I have left you, the Spirit of the Lord will carry you where I do not know. So I will go and tell Ahab, and he will not be able to find you. Then he will kill me. But I your servant have honored the Lord since I was young.

13 ¿ Acaso no te han dicho, mi señor, que cuando Jezabel estaba matando a los profetas del Señor, yo escondí a cien de ellos? A cincuenta los puse en una cueva, y a los otros cincuenta los puse en otra, y los alimenté con pan y agua.

Have you not been told what I did when Jezebel killed the men who spoke for the Lord? I hid 100 men of the Lord by fifties in a cave. And I gave them bread and water.

14 ¡ Y ahora vienes tú y me ordenas que vaya y le diga a mi amo que estás aquí! ¿Acaso quieres que me mate?»

Now you are saying, ‘Go and tell your owner, “See, Elijah is here.”’ He will kill me.”

15 E ntonces Elías le dijo: «Te juro por el Señor de los ejércitos, en cuya presencia estoy, que hoy mismo me presentaré ante tu amo.»

Elijah said, “As the Lord of All lives, before Whom I stand, I will show myself to Ahab today.”

16 E ntonces Abdías fue en busca de Ajab, y cuando lo encontró le dijo que el profeta Elías estaba allí, y Ajab vino al encuentro de Elías.

So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.

17 C uando lo vio, dijo: «¿Qué, no eres tú el que anda perturbando a Israel?»

When he saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, “Is it you, the one who brings trouble to Israel?”

18 Y Elías le respondió: «Yo no ando perturbando a Israel. Lo perturban tú y la familia de tu padre, al apartarse de los mandamientos del Señor y seguir a las imágenes de Baal.

Elijah said, “I have not brought trouble to Israel. But you and your father’s house have. Because you have turned away from the laws of the Lord, and have followed the false gods of Baal.

19 P ero ordena ahora que todo el pueblo se reúna en el monte Carmelo, junto con los cuatrocientos cincuenta profetas de Baal y los cuatrocientos profetas de Asera que Jezabel alimenta.» Elías y los profetas de Baal

So now call together all Israel to me at Mount Carmel. And gather together 450 men who speak for Baal and 400 men who speak for the false goddess Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.” Elijah on Mount Carmel

20 A jab reunió en el monte Carmelo a todos los israelitas y a los profetas.

So Ahab sent news among all the people of Israel. And he brought the men who speak for the false gods together at Mount Carmel.

21 E ntonces Elías se paró frente a todo el pueblo, y dijo: «¿Hasta cuándo van a estar titubeando entre dos sentimientos? Si el Señor es Dios, síganlo a él; pero si piensan que Baal es Dios, entonces vayan tras él.» Y como el pueblo se quedó callado,

Elijah came near all the people and said, “How long will you be divided between two ways of thinking? If the Lord is God, follow Him. But if Baal is God, then follow him.” But the people did not answer him a word.

22 E lías volvió a decirles: «De todos los profetas del Señor, sólo yo he quedado; en cambio, Baal cuenta con cuatrocientos cincuenta profetas.

Then Elijah said to the people, “I am the only man left who speaks for God. But here are 450 men who speak for Baal.

23 P ero traigan dos toros: uno para los profetas de Baal, y otro para mí. Que corten ellos en pedazos el suyo y lo pongan sobre la leña, pero sin prenderle fuego; por mi parte, yo también cortaré en pedazos mi toro, y lo pondré sobre la leña, pero tampoco le prenderé fuego.

Bring two bulls to us. Let them choose one bull for themselves and cut it up and put it on the wood. But put no fire under it. I will make the other bull ready and lay it on the wood. And I will put no fire under it.

24 U stedes van a invocar el nombre de sus dioses, y yo también invocaré el nombre del Señor; y el Dios que responda y envíe fuego sobre el altar, que sea reconocido como el verdadero Dios.» Como todo el pueblo aceptó la propuesta,

Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The God Who answers by fire, He is God.” All the people answered and said, “That is a good idea.”

25 E lías dijo a los profetas de Baal: «Como ustedes son más, escojan uno de los toros y córtenlo en pedazos. Pero no le prendan fuego. Invoquen entonces a sus dioses.»

So Elijah said to the men who spoke for Baal, “Choose one bull for yourselves and make it ready first. For there are many of you. Then call on the name of your god, but put no fire under it.”

26 L os profetas tomaron el toro que se les dio y lo prepararon, y luego invocaron el nombre de Baal desde la mañana hasta el mediodía. Decían: «¡Baal, respóndenos!» Pero aunque saltaban alrededor del altar, el silencio era total.

So they took the bull which was given to them and made it ready. Then they called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, saying, “O Baal, answer us.” But there was no voice. No one answered. They jumped and danced around the altar they had made.

27 H acía el mediodía, Elías comenzó a burlarse de ellos, y les decía: «¡Griten más fuerte! Recuerden que es un dios. Tal vez estará meditando; o se encontrará ocupado; ¡o se habrá ido a otro lugar! ¡Tal vez esté dormido, y ustedes tengan que despertarlo!»

At noon Elijah made fun of them. He said, “Call out with a loud voice, for he is a god. It might be that he is in deep thought or has turned away. He could be away traveling. Or it may be that he is asleep and needs to have someone wake him.”

28 E llos gritaban más fuerte, mientras se hacían cortaduras en el cuerpo con cuchillos y con puntas de lanzas, hasta que la sangre les bañaba el cuerpo.

So they cried with a loud voice. They cut themselves as they had done in the past, with swords and spears until blood poured out on them.

29 P ero pasó el mediodía y los profetas seguían gritando, como en trance, hasta la hora en que se tenía que ofrecer el sacrificio, y no se escuchaba una sola voz; ¡el silencio era total!

When noon passed, they cried out until the time for giving the evening gift. But there was no voice. No one answered. No one listened.

30 E ntonces Elías llamó a todo el pueblo, y les pidió que se acercaran a él. En cuanto el pueblo se acercó, él se puso a arreglar el altar del Señor, que estaba en ruinas;

Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” So all the people came near to him. And he built again the altar of the Lord which had been torn down.

31 t omó doce piedras, una por cada tribu de los hijos de Jacob, a quien el Señor le cambió el nombre y le dijo: «Tu nombre será Israel.»

Then Elijah took twelve stones, by the number of the families of Jacob’s sons. The word of the Lord had come to Jacob’s sons, saying, “Israel will be your name.”

32 C on las doce piedras edificó un altar en honor al nombre del Señor, luego hizo una zanja alrededor del altar, en donde cupieran dos medidas de grano,

With the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord. And he made a ditch around the altar, big enough to hold twenty-two jars of seed.

33 p reparó la leña y destazó el toro, y lo puso sobre la leña;

Then he set the wood in place. He cut the bull in pieces and laid it on the wood. And he said, “Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt gift and on the wood.”

34 e ntonces pidió que llenaran cuatro cántaros con agua, y que la derramaran sobre el toro y sobre la leña, y aún pidió que volvieran a mojar el altar. Esto lo hicieron una y otra vez,

Then he said, “Do it a second time.” And they did it a second time. He said, “Do it a third time.” And they did it a third time.

35 ¡ y el agua corría alrededor del altar, y hasta la zanja se llenó de agua!

The water flowed around the altar, and filled the ditch also.

36 C uando llegó el momento de ofrecer el sacrificio, Elías se acercó al altar y dijo: «Señor, Dios de Abrahán, de Isaac y de Israel, demuestra hoy que tú eres el Dios de Israel y que yo soy tu siervo, y que solamente hago lo que tú me has ordenado hacer.

Then the time came for giving the evening gift. Elijah the man who spoke for God came near and said, “O Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that You are God in Israel. Let it be known that I am Your servant, and have done all these things at Your word.

37 ¡ Respóndeme, Señor, respóndeme! ¡Que tu pueblo reconozca que tú, Señor, eres Dios, y que tú harás que su corazón se vuelva a ti!»

Answer me, O Lord. Answer me so these people may know that You, O Lord, are God. Turn their hearts to You again.”

38 E n ese momento cayó fuego de parte del Señor, y consumió el toro que allí se ofrecía, y la leña, las piedras, y hasta el polvo, ¡y aun secó el agua que inundaba la zanja!

Then the fire of the Lord fell. It burned up the burnt gift, the wood, the stones and the dust. And it picked up the water that was in the ditch.

39 C uando todos vieron esto, se arrodillaron y exclamaron: «¡El Señor es Dios, el Señor es Dios!»

All the people fell on their faces when they saw it. They said, “The Lord, He is God. The Lord, He is God.”

40 E ntonces Elías ordenó: «¡Capturen a los profetas de Baal! ¡Que no escape ninguno!» Y el pueblo los capturó, y Elías los llevó al arroyo de Cisón y allí les cortó la cabeza. Elías ora por lluvia

Then Elijah said to them, “Take hold of the men who speak for Baal. Do not let one of them get away.” So they took hold of them. And Elijah brought them down to the river Kishon, and killed them there. The Rains Come

41 L uego, Elías le dijo a Ajab: «Regresa ya a tu palacio, y come y bebe, que viene una gran tormenta.»

Then Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink. For there is the sound of much rain.”

42 E l rey se fue a comer y beber, mientras que Elías subió a la cumbre del monte Carmelo. Allí se postró en tierra y hundió la cabeza entre las rodillas.

So Ahab went up to eat and drink. But Elijah went up to the top of Carmel. He got down on the ground and put his face between his knees.

43 L uego le dijo a su criado: «Sube más arriba, y mira hacia el mar.» El criado subió, miró el mar y bajó a decir que no se veía nada; pero el profeta le ordenó que regresara siete veces más y mirara.

And he said to his servant, “Go up now and look toward the sea.” So he went up and looked and said, “There is nothing.” Seven times Elijah said, “Go again.”

44 A la séptima vez, el criado dijo: «Veo que del mar se levanta una nube, pequeña como la palma de una mano.» Entonces Elías le dijo: «Corre y dile a Ajab que prepare su carro y se vaya, para que no lo ataje la tormenta.»

The seventh time, he said, “I see a cloud as small as a man’s hand coming up from the sea.” Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Make your war-wagon ready and go down, so that the rain does not stop you.’”

45 M ientras Elías decía esto al criado, los cielos se llenaron de nubarrones, y comenzó a soplar un fuerte viento, y se desató una gran tormenta. Ajab partió de allí, y se fue a Jezrel,

Soon the sky became black with clouds and wind, and there was much rain. And Ahab went to Jezreel.

46 p ero el poder del Señor estuvo con Elías, quien se ajustó la ropa y echó a correr, y llegó a Jezrel antes que el carro de Ajab.

Then the hand of the Lord was on Elijah. He pulled his clothing up under his belt and ran before Ahab to Jezreel.
