1 E n Mispá, los israelitas juraron que ninguno de ellos dejaría que sus hijas se casaran con los benjaminitas.

The men of Israel had made a promise in Mizpah, saying, “None of us will give his daughter in marriage to a man of Benjamin.”

2 S e reunieron como pueblo en la presencia de Dios, y toda la noche lloraron, y con grandes lamentos decían:

So the people came to Bethel and sat there before God until evening. In loud voices they cried,

3 « Señor, Dios de Israel, ¿por qué le ha sucedido esto a nuestro pueblo? ¿Por qué tendría que faltar una de nuestras tribus?»

“O Lord, God of Israel, why has this happened in Israel? Why should there be one family group missing in Israel today?”

4 A l día siguiente, muy de mañana, el pueblo se levantó y construyó un altar, y allí le ofrecieron al Señor holocaustos y sacrificios de reconciliación.

The people got up early the next day and built an altar there. They gave burnt gifts and peace gifts on it.

5 L uego se preguntaron: «¿Cuáles tribus, de todas las que componen Israel, no se presentaron ante el Señor?» Y es que habían hecho un pacto de muerte contra los que no hubieran estado en Mispá.

Then the people of Israel said, “Who among all the family groups of Israel did not come with the people to the Lord?” For they had made a promise about the one who did not come to the Lord at Mizpah, saying, “For sure he will be put to death.”

6 A demás, los israelitas estaban tristes por la suerte de la tribu de Benjamín, pues decían: «Hoy ha sido separada de Israel una de sus tribus.

The people of Israel were sorry for their brother Benjamin. They said, “One family is cut off from Israel today.

7 ¿ Qué vamos a hacer con los hombres que aun quedan, en cuanto a mujeres para ellos? Nosotros hicimos un pacto ante el Señor, de que no les daremos nuestras hijas por mujeres.»

What will we do for wives for those who are left? We have promised by the Lord not to give them any of our daughters in marriage.”

8 T ambién se preguntaban: «¿Hay alguien de las tribus de Israel que no se haya presentado ante el Señor en Mispá?» Y se dieron cuenta de que ninguno de la familia de Jabés Galaad se había presentado a la reunión en el campamento,

They said, “Who of the families of Israel did not come to the Lord at Mizpah?” And they found that no one had come to the meeting from Jabesh-gilead.

9 p ues cuando se pasó revista al pueblo, no estuvo allí ninguno de esa familia.

When the people were called, they saw that not one of the people of Jabesh-gilead was there.

10 E ntonces la comunidad envió a doce mil hombres de los más valientes, con las órdenes de matar a todos los habitantes de Jabés Galaad, incluso a mujeres y niños,

The people sent 12, 000 powerful soldiers to go there. They told them, “Go and kill the people of Jabesh-gilead with the sword. Kill the women and the children also.

11 y a todos los varones, y a las mujeres que ya hubieran tenido relaciones íntimas con algún hombre.

This is what you must do. Destroy every man and every woman who has had a man.”

12 C uando esos israelitas llegaron a Jabés Galaad, hallaron a cuatrocientas doncellas que aún no habían tenido relaciones íntimas con ningún hombre, y las llevaron al campamento en Silo, en la tierra de Canaán.

They found 400 young women who had never had a man. So they brought them to the tents at Shiloh, in the land of Canaan.

13 E ntonces la comunidad envió un mensaje a los benjaminitas que estaban en la peña de Rimón, para invitarlos a hacer las paces.

Then all the people sent news to the people of Benjamin at the rock of Rimmon. They told them they wanted to have peace with them.

14 C uando los benjaminitas llegaron, les dieron las mujeres que habían traído de Jabés Galaad. Pero aún faltaron mujeres.

So the people of Benjamin returned. The people of Israel gave them the women they had saved alive from the women of Jabesh-gilead. But there were not enough for them.

15 Y los israelitas tuvieron compasión de los benjaminitas, porque el Señor había dejado un vacío entre las tribus de Israel.

The people were sorry for Benjamin because the Lord had divided the families of Israel.

16 A nte esto, los ancianos de la comunidad dijeron: «¿Qué vamos a hacer para dar mujeres a los hombres que no alcanzaron ninguna?» Y es que habían matado a todas las mujeres benjaminitas.

Then the leaders of the people said, “What will we do for wives for those who are left? All the women of Benjamin were killed.”

17 R esolvieron entonces que las propiedades de Benjamín quedaran en manos de los que habían escapado de morir, para que no desapareciera una tribu de Israel,

And they said, “There must be something that can be given to those of Benjamin who are left. Or a family will be taken out of Israel.

18 y dijeron: «Nosotros no les podemos dar por esposas a nuestras hijas, por causa del pacto que hicimos de condenar al que les dé por mujer a una de sus hijas.»

But we cannot give them our daughters for wives.” For the men of Israel had promised, “A curse will come to the one who gives a wife to Benjamin.”

19 P ero recordaron que cada año se celebraba una fiesta especial del Señor en Silo, al norte de Betel y al oriente del camino que va de Betel a Siquén, y al sur de Lebona.

So they said, “See, there is a special supper to the Lord every year in Shiloh. It is north of Bethel, east of the road that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah.”

20 A consejaron entonces a los benjaminitas que pusieran emboscadas en los viñedos,

They told the men of Benjamin, “Go and hide in the grape-fields. Wait there

21 y que estuvieran atentos para que, cuando vieran a las mujeres de Silo salir a bailar en grupos, ellos salieran de los viñedos y tomaran para sí a una de las mujeres de Silo, y se la llevara a su tierra.

and watch. The daughters of Shiloh might come out to dance. Then come out of the grape-fields. Each of you will catch his wife from the daughters of Shiloh. Then go to the land of Benjamin.

22 Y añadieron: «Si los padres o los hermanos de ellas las reclaman, nosotros les pediremos que los perdonen y se las concedan como un favor especial, ya que durante la guerra contra Jabés no tomamos mujeres para todos. Además, como ellos mismos no se las entregaron, no tendrán que sentirse culpables.»

When their fathers or brothers come to complain to us, we will say to them, ‘Give them to us of your own free will. For we did not leave a wife for each of the men of Benjamin in battle. And you did not give them any. You would have been doing wrong.’”

23 L os benjaminitas aceptaron el consejo; y cada uno raptó para sí una de las mujeres que bailaban, y luego se fueron a su tierra, donde volvieron a edificar y habitar sus ciudades.

The men of Benjamin did so. They took wives from those who danced, one for each man. They carried them away and returned to their land. Then they built the cities again and lived in them.

24 P or su parte, también los israelitas se fueron, cada uno con su familia, a su tierra.

The people of Israel left there at that time. Each man returned to his family in his own land.

25 E n aquellos días no había rey en Israel, y cada quien hacía lo que le parecía mejor.

There was no king in Israel in those days. Each man did what he thought was right.
