1 ¿ De dónde vienen las guerras y las peleas entre ustedes? ¿Acaso no vienen de sus pasiones, las cuales luchan dentro de ustedes mismos?

What starts wars and fights among you? Is it not because you want many things and are fighting to have them?

2 S i ustedes desean algo, y no lo obtienen, entonces matan. Si arden de envidia y no consiguen lo que desean, entonces discuten y luchan. Pero no obtienen lo que desean, porque no piden;

You want something you do not have, so you kill. You want something but cannot get it, so you fight for it. You do not get things because you do not ask for them.

3 y cuando piden algo, no lo reciben porque lo piden con malas intenciones, para gastarlo en sus propios placeres.

Or if you do ask, you do not receive because your reasons for asking are wrong. You want these things only to please yourselves.

4 ¡ Ay, gente adúltera! ¿No saben que la amistad con el mundo es enemistad con Dios? Todo aquel que quiera ser amigo del mundo, se declara enemigo de Dios.

You are as wives and husbands who are not faithful in marriage and do sex sins. Do you not know that to love the sinful things of the world and to be a friend to them is to be against God? Yes, I say it again, if you are a friend of the world, you are against God.

5 N o crean que la Escritura dice en vano: «Ardientemente nos desea el Espíritu que él ha hecho habitar en nosotros.»

Do you think the Holy Writings mean nothing when they said, “The Holy Spirit Whom God has given to live in us has a strong desire for us to be faithful to Him”?

6 P ero la gracia que él nos da es mayor. Por eso dice: «Dios se opone a los soberbios, y da gracia a los humildes.»

But He gives us more loving-favor. For the Holy Writings say, “God works against the proud but gives loving-favor to those who have no pride.”

7 P or lo tanto, sométanse a Dios; opongan resistencia al diablo, y él huirá de ustedes.

So give yourselves to God. Stand against the devil and he will run away from you.

8 A cérquense a Dios, y él se acercará a ustedes. ¡Límpiense las manos, pecadores! Y ustedes, los pusilánimes, ¡purifiquen su corazón!

Come close to God and He will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners. Clean up your hearts, you who want to follow the sinful ways of the world and God at the same time.

9 ¡ Lloren, aflíjanse, hagan lamentos! ¡Conviertan su risa en llanto, y su alegría en tristeza!

Be sorry for your sins and cry because of them. Be sad and do not laugh. Let your joy be turned to sorrow.

10 ¡ Humíllense ante el Señor, y él los exaltará! No juzguen a los hermanos

Let yourself be brought low before the Lord. Then He will lift you up and help you. Do Not Talk Against Each Other

11 H ermanos, no hablen mal los unos de los otros. El que habla mal del hermano y lo juzga, habla mal de la ley y juzga a la ley. Y si tú juzgas a la ley, te eriges en juez de la ley, y no en alguien que debe cumplirla.

Christian brothers, do not talk against anyone or speak bad things about each other. If a person says bad things about his brother, he is speaking against him. And he will be speaking against God’s Law. If you say the Law is wrong, and do not obey it, you are saying you are better than the Law.

12 L a ley la ha dado Uno solo, el cual tiene poder para salvar y destruir. Pero tú, ¿quién eres para juzgar a tu prójimo? Nada sabemos del mañana

Only God can say what is right or wrong. He made the Law. He can save or put to death. How can we say if our brother is right or wrong?

13 A hora escuchen con cuidado, ustedes los que dicen: «Hoy o mañana iremos a tal o cual ciudad, y estaremos allá un año, y haremos negocios, y ganaremos dinero.»

Listen! You who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this city and stay a year and make money.”

14 ¡ Si ni siquiera saben cómo será el día de mañana! ¿Y qué es la vida de ustedes? Es como la neblina, que en un momento aparece, y luego se evapora.

You do not know about tomorrow. What is your life? It is like fog. You see it and soon it is gone.

15 L o que deben decir es: «Si el Señor quiere, viviremos y haremos esto o aquello.»

What you should say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.”

16 P ero ustedes se jactan con arrogancia, y toda jactancia de este tipo es mala.

But instead you are proud. You talk loud and big about yourselves. All such pride is sin.

17 E l que sabe hacer lo bueno, y no lo hace, comete pecado.

If you know what is right to do but you do not do it, you sin.
