1 A masías tenía veinticinco años cuando comenzó a reinar, y reinó en Jerusalén veintinueve años. Su madre se llamaba Yoadán, y era de Jerusalén.

Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king. And he ruled for twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.

2 Y Amasías hizo lo recto a los ojos del Señor, aunque no de todo corazón,

Amaziah did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, but not with a whole heart.

3 p ues tan pronto como fue confirmado en el trono mató a los siervos que habían matado a su padre el rey.

As soon as the nation was under his rule, he killed his servants who had killed his father the king.

4 S in embargo, y de acuerdo con lo que está escrito en la ley, en el libro de Moisés, no mató a los hijos de ellos, pues allí el Señor ha ordenado: «No morirán los padres por los hijos, ni los hijos por los padres. Cada uno morirá por causa de su pecado.»

But he did not kill their children. He did what is written in the Law in the book of Moses. The Lord had said in this Law, “Fathers must not be put to death for the children. And children must not be put to death for the fathers. Each must be put to death for his own sin.” The War against Edom

5 A masías reunió a los de Judá y puso jefes de millares y de centenas sobre todo Judá y Benjamín, según el orden de sus familias. Además, levantó un censo de todos los hombres mayores de veinte años, y se encontró que había trescientos mil capaces de ir a la guerra y de empuñar lanza y escudo.

Then Amaziah gathered the men of Judah together. He put them, by their fathers’ houses, under the rule of captains of thousands and of hundreds for all Judah and Benjamin. He numbered those who were twenty years old and older. And he found that they were 300, 000 chosen men, able to go to war and fight with spear and battle-covering.

6 A demás, contrató a cien mil israelitas aguerridos, a los que pagaba un sueldo de tres mil trescientos kilos de plata.

He also asked for the help of 100, 000 powerful soldiers from Israel and paid them with silver weighing as much as 100 men.

7 P ero vino un hombre de parte de Dios, y le dijo: «Su Majestad, no conviene que el ejército de Israel lo acompañe, porque el Señor no está con los israelitas ni con ninguno de los efraimitas.

But a man of God came to him and said, “O king, do not let the army of Israel go with you. For the Lord is not with Israel. He is not with all these sons of Ephraim.

8 S i Su Majestad decide hacerlo así, e insiste en entrar en combate, Dios lo hará caer derrotado delante de sus enemigos, porque Dios tiene el poder de ayudar y de derrotar.»

But if you think that in this way you will be strong in war, God will destroy you in front of those who fight you. For God has power to help and to destroy.”

9 P ero Amasías le dijo al hombre de Dios: «¿Y qué va a pasar con los tres mil trescientos kilos de plata que le he pagado al ejército israelita?» Y el hombre de Dios respondió: «El Señor puede dar a Su Majestad mucho más que eso.»

Amaziah said to the man of God, “But what should I do about the silver weighing as much as 100 men, which I have given to the army of Israel?” The man of God answered, “The Lord has much more to give you than this.”

10 E ntonces Amasías apartó a su ejército del ejército efraimita que había venido en su ayuda, y les ordenó que se fueran a sus casas. Ellos se enojaron grandemente contra Judá, y encolerizados volvieron a sus casas.

Then Amaziah sent the army home which had come to him from Ephraim. These hired soldiers were angry at the people of Judah. As they returned home they were very angry.

11 P ero Amasías salió con su ejército y se dirigió al Valle de la Sal, y allí mató a diez mil de los hijos de Seir;

Now Amaziah made himself strong of heart, and he led his people to the Valley of Salt and killed 10, 000 men of Seir.

12 l os hijos de Judá, por su parte, tomaron vivos a otros diez mil, a los que llevaron a la cumbre de un peñasco, y desde allí los despeñaron, y todos ellos murieron hechos pedazos.

The men of Judah also took 10, 000 men alive. They brought them to the top of a high rock and threw them down from it, so they were all crushed to pieces.

13 M ientras tanto, los del ejército que Amasías había despedido, y que ya no fueron con él a la guerra, invadieron las ciudades de Judá, desde Samaria hasta Bet Jorón, y mataron a tres mil de ellos, y los despojaron por completo.

But the soldiers from Israel whom Amaziah had sent back from going with him to battle came and fought against the cities of Judah. They fought cities from Samaria to Beth-horon, and killed 3, 000 people living in them. And they took many things which had belonged to the people in these cities.

14 A l volver Amasías de haber derrotado a los edomitas, trajo consigo los dioses de los hijos de Seir, los reconoció como dioses, y los adoró y les quemó incienso.

After Amaziah came from killing the Edomites, he brought the gods of the men of Seir. He set them up as his gods. He bowed down in front of them, and burned special perfume to them.

15 E ntonces el Señor se encendió en ira contra Amasías, y envió un profeta a que le dijera: «¿Por qué has ido tras los dioses de otra nación, que no libraron de tus manos a su pueblo?»

Then the Lord was angry with Amaziah and sent a man who speaks for God to him, saying, “Why have you worshiped the gods of the people? These gods have not saved their own people from your hand.”

16 M ientras el profeta le decía esto, Amasías le respondió: «¿Acaso te han nombrado consejero del rey? ¡Déjate de tonterías! ¿O acaso quieres que te maten?» Cuando Amasías terminó de hablar, el profeta le dijo: «Yo sólo sé que, por haber actuado así, y por no haber hecho caso de mis consejos, Dios ha decidido destruirte.»

But as he was speaking the king said to him, “Have we chosen you to give words of wisdom to the king? Stop! Or I will have you put to death.” So the man who spoke for God stopped, but said, “I know that God has planned to destroy you because you have done this. And you have not listened to what I have said.” Israel Wins over Judah

17 E l rey Amasías de Judá se reunió con sus consejeros y mandó a decir a Joás hijo de Joacaz, hijo de Jehú, rey de Israel: «Ven acá, y nos veremos las caras.»

Then King Amaziah of Judah spoke with his wise men, and sent word to Joash the son of Jehoahaz the son of Jehu, the king of Israel, saying, “Come, let us face each other.”

18 E l rey Joás de Israel le envió al rey Amasías de Judá la siguiente respuesta: «Había en el Líbano un cardo, que mandó a decir al cedro del Líbano: “Deja que tu hija se case con mi hijo.” ¡Pero los animales salvajes del Líbano pasaron y pisotearon el cardo!

King Joash of Israel sent an answer to King Amaziah of Judah, saying, “The thorn bush in Lebanon sent word to the cedar in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son for a wife.’ But a wild animal of Lebanon passed by and crushed the thorn bush under its feet.

19 ¿ Acaso crees que el haber derrotado a Edom basta para que el corazón se te hinche de orgullo? Es mejor que te quedes en tu casa. ¿Para qué provocar una desgracia, en la que tú y Judá salgan derrotados?»

You say, ‘See, I have destroyed Edom.’ And your heart has become proud by what you say. Now stay at home. Why should you bring trouble so you will fall, and Judah with you?”

20 P ero Amasías no le hizo caso. Y es que era la voluntad de Dios entregarlos en manos de sus enemigos, por haberse ido tras los dioses de Edom.

But Amaziah would not listen. God had planned that He would give Judah into the hand of Joash because Judah had worshiped the gods of Edom.

21 P or eso el rey Joás de Israel y el rey Amasías de Judá se enfrentaron cara a cara en la batalla de Bet Semes, en Judá.

So King Joash of Israel met King Amaziah of Judah in battle at Beth-shemesh of Judah.

22 A llí Judá fue derrotado por Israel, y cada uno salió huyendo a su casa.

And Judah lost the battle to Israel. Each man ran away to his home.

23 A llí en Bet Semes el rey Joás de Israel tomó preso al rey Amasías de Judá, hijo de Joás, hijo de Joacaz, y lo llevó a Jerusalén, y derribó la muralla de Jerusalén desde la puerta de Efraín hasta la puerta del ángulo, en un tramo de cuatrocientos codos;

King Joash of Israel took King Amaziah of Judah, the son of Joash, son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh, and brought him to Jerusalem. He tore down the wall of Jerusalem from the Gate of Ephraim to the Corner Gate, as much wall as 200 long steps.

24 s e llevó además todo el oro y la plata, y todos los utensilios que se hallaron en el templo de Dios y en casa de Obed Edom, así como los tesoros del palacio del rey; hizo prisioneros a los hijos de los nobles, y después de eso volvió a Samaria.

And he took all the gold and silver, and all the objects found in the house of God with Obed-edom. He took the riches of the king’s house, and people also, and returned to Samaria. The Death of Amaziah

25 D espués de la muerte del rey Joás hijo de Joacaz, de Israel, el rey Amasías hijo de Joás, de Judá, vivió quince años.

Amaziah, the son of King Joash of Judah, lived fifteen years after the death of Joash, the son of King Jehoahaz of Israel.

26 L os demás hechos de Amasías, primeros y últimos, están escritos en el libro de los reyes de Judá y de Israel.

Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah, from first to last, are written in the Book of the Kings of Judah and Israel.

27 A partir de que Amasías se apartó del Señor, se empezó a conspirar contra él en Jerusalén; y aunque él huyó a Laquis, lo fueron persiguiendo hasta Laquis, y allí lo mataron;

After Amaziah turned away from the Lord, they made plans against him in Jerusalem, and he ran away to Lachish. But they sent men after him to Lachish, and killed him there.

28 l uego lo llevaron a caballo hasta la ciudad capital de Judá, y allí lo sepultaron con sus antepasados.

Then they brought him on horses and buried him with his fathers in the city of Judah.
