1 G iosia aveva otto anni quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò trentun anni a Gerusalemme.

Josiah was eight years old when he became king. And he ruled thirty-one years in Jerusalem.

2 E gli fece ciò che è giusto agli occhi del Signore e camminò per le vie di Davide suo padre, senza scostarsene né a destra né a sinistra.

He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, and walked in the ways of his father David. He did not turn aside to the right or to the left.

3 L ’ottavo anno del suo regno, mentre era ancora ragazzo, cominciò a cercare il Dio di Davide suo padre; e il dodicesimo anno cominciò a purificare Giuda e Gerusalemme dagli alti luoghi, dagli idoli di Astarte, dalle immagini scolpite e dalle immagini fuse.

For in the eighth year of his rule while he was still young, he began to look for the God of his father David. In the twelfth year he began to take the sinful things out of Judah and Jerusalem. He took away the high places, the objects of the false goddess Asherah, and all the objects made to look like gods.

4 I n sua presenza furono demoliti gli altari dei Baal e abbattute le colonne solari che c’erano sopra. Frantumò gli idoli di Astarte, le immagini scolpite e le statue, e le ridusse in polvere, che sparse sulle tombe di quelli che avevano offerto loro dei sacrifici;

They tore down the altars of the false gods of Baal in front of him. And he cut down the special perfume altars which stood above them. He broke in pieces the objects of the false goddess Asherah and all the objects made to look like gods. Then he ground them to dust and spread it on the graves of those who had given gifts in worship to them.

5 b ruciò le ossa dei sacerdoti sui loro altari. Così purificò Giuda e Gerusalemme.

He burned the bones of their religious leaders on their altars, and made Judah and Jerusalem free from worshiping false gods.

6 L o stesso fece nelle città di Manasse, di Efraim, di Simeone e fino a Neftali: dappertutto, in mezzo alle loro rovine,

And in the cities of Manasseh, Ephraim, Simeon, and as far as Naphtali, in the broken down places around them,

7 d emolì gli altari, frantumò e ridusse in polvere gli idoli di Astarte e le immagini scolpite, abbatté tutte le colonne solari in tutto il paese d’Israele e tornò a Gerusalemme.

Josiah tore down the altars and beat to dust the objects of Asherah and the objects made to look like gods. He cut down all the special perfume altars through all the land of Israel. Then he returned to Jerusalem. The Book of the Law Is Found

8 I l diciottesimo anno del suo regno, dopo aver purificato il paese e la casa del Signore, mandò Safan, figlio di Asalia, Maaseia, governatore della città, e Ioa, figlio di Ioacaz, l’archivista, per restaurare la casa del Signore, suo Dio.

Now it was the eighteenth year of his rule, and Josiah had made the land and the Lord’s house free from worshiping false gods. At that time he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, Maaseiah the leader of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz, who wrote down the things that happened, to do the work needed on the house of the Lord his God.

9 Q uelli si recarono dal sommo sacerdote Chilchia, e fu loro consegnato il denaro che era stato portato nel tempio di Dio e che i Leviti, custodi della soglia, avevano raccolto in Manasse, in Efraim, in tutto il rimanente d’Israele, in tutto Giuda e Beniamino e fra gli abitanti di Gerusalemme.

They came to Hilkiah the head religious leader and gave him the money that was brought into the house of God. The Levites who watched the door had received this money from Manasseh and Ephraim and from all those who were left of Israel, and from all Judah and Benjamin and the people of Jerusalem.

10 E ssi lo rimisero nelle mani dei direttori preposti ai lavori della casa del Signore, e i direttori lo diedero a quelli che lavoravano nella casa del Signore per ripararla e restaurarla.

Then they gave the money to the workmen who watched over the work of the Lord’s house. And the workmen who were working in the Lord’s house used it to make the house like new.

11 L o diedero ai falegnami e ai costruttori, per comprare delle pietre da tagliare e del legname per l’armatura e la travatura delle case che i re di Giuda avevano distrutte.

They gave the money to those who work with wood and to the builders to buy cut stone and wood for joints and building-pieces for the houses. The kings of Judah had not had the needed work done on them.

12 Q uegli uomini facevano il loro lavoro con fedeltà; ad essi erano preposti Iaat e Obadia, Leviti dei figli di Merari, e Zaccaria e Mesullam dei figli di Cheat, per la direzione, e tutti quelli dei Leviti che erano abili a suonare strumenti musicali.

And the men were faithful in doing the work. Watching over them were Jahath and Obadiah, the Levites of the sons of Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam of the sons of the Kohathites. The Levites who were good at playing music

13 Q uesti sorvegliavano pure i portatori di pesi e dirigevano tutti gli operai occupati nei diversi lavori; fra i Leviti addetti a quei lavori ce n’erano di quelli che erano segretari, commissari, portinai. Il libro della legge trovato nel tempio

watched over those who carried loads and those who did work in every kind of duty. Some of the Levites were writers and leaders and gate-keepers.

14 M entre si prelevava il denaro che era stato portato nella casa del Signore, il sacerdote Chilchia trovò il libro della legge del Signore, data per mezzo di Mosè.

When they were bringing out the money which had been brought into the Lord’s house, Hilkiah the religious leader found the book of the Law of the Lord given by Moses.

15 C hilchia parlò a Safan, il segretario, e gli disse: «Ho trovato nella casa del Signore il libro della legge». E Chilchia diede il libro a Safan.

Hilkiah told Shaphan the writer, “I have found the book of the Law in the Lord’s house.” And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan.

16 S afan portò il libro al re e gli fece al tempo stesso la sua relazione, dicendo: «I tuoi servi hanno fatto tutto quello che è stato loro ordinato.

Then Shaphan brought the book to the king, and said to him, “Your servants are doing all the work that they have been given to do.

17 H anno versato il denaro che si è trovato nella casa del Signore e l’hanno consegnato a quelli che sono responsabili dei lavori e degli operai».

They have taken all the money that was found in the Lord’s house and have given it to the leaders and the workmen.”

18 S afan, il segretario, disse ancora al re: «Il sacerdote Chilchia m’ha dato un libro». E Safan lo lesse in presenza del re.

Then Shaphan the writer said to the king, “Hilkiah the religious leader gave me a book.” And Shaphan read it in front of the king.

19 Q uando il re udì le parole della legge, si stracciò le vesti.

When King Josiah heard the words of the Law, he tore his clothes.

20 P oi il re diede quest’ordine a Chilchia, ad Aicam, figlio di Safan, ad Abdon, figlio di Mica, a Safan il segretario e ad Asaia, servitore del re:

Then the king called Hilkiah, Ahikam the son of Shaphan, Abdon the son of Micah, Shaphan the writer, and Asaiah the king’s servant. He told them,

21 « Andate a consultare il Signore per me e per ciò che rimane d’Israele e di Giuda riguardo alle parole di questo libro che si è trovato; poiché grande è l’ira del Signore che si è riversata su di noi, perché i nostri padri non hanno osservato la parola del Signore e non hanno messo in pratica tutto quello che è scritto in questo libro».

“Go, ask the Lord for me, and for those who are left in Israel and Judah, about the words of the book which have been found. For much of the Lord’s anger has been poured out on us because our fathers have not obeyed the Word of the Lord. They have not done all that is written in this book.”

22 C hilchia e quelli che il re aveva designati andarono dalla profetessa Culda, moglie di Sallum, figlio di Tocat, figlio di Casra, il custode del vestiario. Lei abitava a Gerusalemme, nel secondo quartiere; e quelli le parlarono nel senso indicato dal re.

So Hilkiah and those whom the king had sent went to Huldah the woman who spoke for God. She was the wife of Shallum the son of Tokhath, the son of Hasrah, who watched over the clothing. (She lived in Jerusalem in the second part of the city.) They spoke to her about this.

23 L ei disse loro: «Così dice il Signore, Dio d’Israele: “Dite all’uomo che vi ha mandati da me:

And she said to them, “The Lord, the God of Israel, says, ‘Tell the man who sent you to Me

24 ‘ Così dice il Signore: Ecco, io farò venire delle sciagure su questo luogo e sopra i suoi abitanti, farò venire tutte le maledizioni che sono scritte nel libro, che è stato letto in presenza del re di Giuda.

what I say. See, I am bringing much trouble to this place and to its people. I am allowing all the curses to come which are written in the book they have read in front of the king of Judah.

25 P oiché essi mi hanno abbandonato e hanno offerto incenso ad altri dèi, provocando la mia ira con tutte le opere delle loro mani; perciò la mia ira si è accesa contro questo luogo e non si spegnerà’.

They have left Me and have burned special perfume to other gods, that they might make Me angry with all the work of their hands. So My anger will be poured out on this place, and it will not be stopped.

26 A l re di Giuda, che vi ha mandati a consultare il Signore, direte questo: ‘Così dice il Signore, Dio d’Israele, riguardo alle parole che tu hai udite:

But tell the king of Judah who sent you to the Lord, “This is what the Lord God of Israel says about the words which you have heard:

27 P oiché il tuo cuore è stato toccato, poiché ti sei umiliato davanti a Dio, udendo le sue parole contro questo luogo e contro i suoi abitanti, poiché ti sei umiliato davanti a me e ti sei stracciate le vesti e hai pianto davanti a me, anch’io ti ho ascoltato’, dice il Signore.

‘Your heart was broken and you had no pride before God when you heard His words against this place and its people. And because you came before Me with no pride, tore your clothes, and cried before Me, I have heard you,’ says the Lord.

28 ‘ Ecco, io ti riunirò con i tuoi padri e te ne andrai in pace nella tua tomba; e i tuoi occhi non vedranno tutte le sciagure che io farò piombare su questo luogo e sopra i suoi abitanti’”». E quelli riferirono al re la risposta.

‘Your eyes will not see all the much trouble that I will bring on this place and its people. It will come after you die. You will be taken to your grave in peace.’”’” The men brought back this word to the king. Josiah Brings Back True Worship

29 A llora il re mandò a chiamare presso di sé tutti gli anziani di Giuda e di Gerusalemme.

Then the king sent and gathered together all the leaders of Judah and Jerusalem.

30 I l re salì alla casa del Signore con tutti gli uomini di Giuda, tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, i sacerdoti e i Leviti, e tutto il popolo, grandi e piccoli, e lesse in loro presenza tutte le parole del libro del patto, che era stato trovato nella casa del Signore.

The king went up to the house of the Lord, with all the men of Judah, the people of Jerusalem, the religious leaders, the Levites, and all the people from the greatest to the least. And he read in their hearing all the words of the book of the agreement which was found in the Lord’s house.

31 I l re, stando in piedi sul palco, fece un patto davanti al Signore, impegnandosi a seguire il Signore, a osservare i suoi comandamenti, i suoi precetti e le sue leggi con tutto il cuore e con tutta l’anima, per mettere in pratica le parole del patto scritte in questo libro.

Then the king stood in his place and made an agreement before the Lord. He agreed to follow the Lord, to obey His Laws with all his heart and soul, and to do what is written in the agreement in this book.

32 E fece aderire al patto tutti quelli che si trovavano a Gerusalemme e in Beniamino; e gli abitanti di Gerusalemme si conformarono al patto di Dio, Dio dei loro padri.

And he made all who were there in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand with him. So the people of Jerusalem promised to obey the agreement of God, the God of their fathers.

33 G iosia fece sparire tutte le abominazioni da tutti i paesi che appartenevano ai figli d’Israele, e impose a tutti quelli che si trovavano in Israele di servire il Signore, loro Dio. Durante tutto il tempo della vita di Giosia essi non cessarono di seguire il Signore, Dio dei loro padri.

Josiah took away all the hated false gods from all the lands belonging to the sons of Israel. He made all who were in Israel worship the Lord their God. While Josiah was alive, they did not turn from following the Lord God of their fathers.
