1 D opo queste cose Absalom si procurò un cocchio, dei cavalli e cinquanta uomini che correvano davanti a lui.

After this, Absalom got a war-wagon and horses, and fifty men to run in front of him.

2 A bsalom si alzava la mattina presto e si metteva da un lato della via che conduceva alle porte della città; quando qualcuno aveva un processo e si recava dal re per chiedere giustizia, Absalom lo chiamava e gli chiedeva: «Di quale città sei?» L’altro gli rispondeva: «Il tuo servo è di tale e tale tribù d’Israele».

He used to get up early and stand beside the way to the gate. When any man had a problem to be decided upon by the king, Absalom would call to him and say, “What city are you from?” And he would answer, “Your servant is from one of the families of Israel.”

3 A llora Absalom gli diceva: «Vedi, la tua causa è buona e giusta, ma non c’è chi sia delegato dal re per sentirti».

Then Absalom would say to him, “Your side of the problem is good and right. But there is no man to listen to you for the king.”

4 P oi Absalom aggiungeva: «Oh, se facessero me giudice del paese! Chiunque avesse un litigio o un reclamo verrebbe da me e io gli farei giustizia».

And Absalom would say, “If only I were chosen to be the one to be judge in the land! Then every man who has a problem could come to me. And I would do for him what is right and fair.”

5 Q uando uno gli si avvicinava per prostrarsi davanti a lui, egli gli porgeva la mano, l’abbracciava e lo baciava.

When a man came near to put his face to the ground in front of him, Absalom would put out his hand and take hold of him and kiss him.

6 A bsalom faceva così con tutti gli Israeliti che venivano dal re per chiedere giustizia; in questo modo Absalom rubò il cuore della gente d’Israele.

He acted this way toward all those of Israel who came with a problem for the king to judge. So Absalom became friends with the men of Israel.

7 Q uattro anni dopo, Absalom disse al re: «Ti prego, lasciami andare a Ebron a sciogliere un voto che ho fatto al Signore.

At the end of four years, Absalom said to the king, “I ask you, let me go to Hebron and keep my promise that I have promised to the Lord.

8 I nfatti, durante la sua residenza a Ghesur, in Siria, il tuo servo fece un voto, dicendo: “Se il Signore mi riconduce a Gerusalemme, io servirò il Signore a Ebron”».

For your servant made a promise while I was living at Geshur in Syria, saying, ‘If the Lord will bring me again to Jerusalem, then I will serve the Lord.’”

9 I l re gli disse: «Va’ in pace!» Così egli si alzò e andò a Ebron.

And the king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he got up and went to Hebron.

10 I ntanto Absalom mandò degli emissari per tutte le tribù d’Israele a dire: «Quando udrete il suono della tromba, direte: “Absalom è proclamato re a Ebron”».

But Absalom sent men to go in secret through all the families of Israel. He said to them, “As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, then say, ‘Absalom is king at Hebron.’”

11 C on Absalom partirono da Gerusalemme duecento uomini, i quali, essendo stati invitati, partirono in tutta la loro semplicità, senza sapere nulla.

With Absalom went 200 men from Jerusalem. They had been asked to come, and did not know what Absalom had planned.

12 M entre offriva i sacrifici, Absalom mandò a chiamare Aitofel, il Ghilonita, consigliere di Davide, perché venisse dalla sua città di Ghilo. La congiura si rafforzava e il popolo diventava sempre più numeroso attorno ad Absalom. Fuga di Davide

While Absalom was giving gifts on the altar in worship, he sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, from his city Giloh. He was the man who talked with David about what to do. The plans against David became strong. For more and more people joined Absalom. David Runs from Jerusalem

13 V enne a Davide un messaggero, che disse: «Il cuore degli uomini d’Israele si è volto verso Absalom».

Then a man came to David with news, saying, “The hearts of the men of Israel are with Absalom.”

14 A llora Davide disse a tutti i suoi servi che erano con lui a Gerusalemme: «Alzatevi, fuggiamo altrimenti nessuno di noi scamperà dalle mani di Absalom. Affrettatevi a partire, affinché, con una rapida marcia, non ci sorprenda, piombandoci rovinosamente addosso e mettendo la città a fil di spada».

David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, “Get up and let us run. Or else none of us will be safe from Absalom. Hurry and go, or he will be quick to catch us and bring trouble upon us. He would destroy the city with the sword.”

15 I servitori del re gli dissero: «Ecco i tuoi servi, pronti a fare tutto quello che piacerà al re, nostro signore».

The king’s servants said to him, “See, your servants are ready to do whatever my lord the king chooses.”

16 I l re dunque partì, seguito da tutta la sua casa, e lasciò dieci concubine a custodire il palazzo.

So the king left with all those of his house. But he left ten of his women to take care of the house.

17 I l re partì seguito da tutto il popolo, e si fermarono a Bet-Merac.

The king left with all the people, and they stopped at the last house.

18 T utti i servitori del re camminavano al suo fianco; e tutti i Cheretei, tutti i Peletei e tutti i Ghittei, che in seicento erano venuti da Gat al suo seguito, camminavano davanti al re.

All his servants passed by him, and all the Cherethites, Pelethites, Gittites, and 600 men who had come with him from Gath. They all passed by the king.

19 A llora il re disse a Ittai di Gat: «Perché vuoi venire anche tu con noi? Torna indietro e rimani con il re; perché sei un forestiero e per di più un esule della tua patria.

Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, “Why do you go with us also? Return and stay with the king. For you are from another land and have been driven from your home.

20 T u sei arrivato solo ieri e oggi ti farei andare errando qua e là con noi, mentre io stesso non so dove vado? Torna indietro e riconduci con te i tuoi fratelli; siano con te la bontà e la fedeltà del Signore!»

You came only yesterday. Should I make you go with us today, when I do not know where I am going? Return with your brothers. May loving-kindness and faith be with you.”

21 M a Ittai rispose al re e disse: «Com’è vero che il Signore vive e che vive il re mio signore, in qualunque luogo sarà il re mio signore, per morire o per vivere, là sarà pure il tuo servo».

But Ittai said to the king, “As the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, your servant will be where my lord the king may be, in death or in life.”

22 A llora Davide disse a Ittai: «Va’ pure avanti!» Ittai, il Ghitteo, passò avanti con tutta la sua gente e con tutti i bambini che erano con lui.

So David said to him, “Go then, pass on.” And Ittai the Gittite passed on, with all his men and all the little ones who were with him.

23 T utti quelli del paese piangevano ad alta voce, mentre tutto il popolo passava. Il re attraversò il torrente Chidron. Anche tutto il popolo l’attraversò, prendendo la via del deserto.

All the country was crying with a loud voice as all the people passed by. The king crossed the river Kidron, and all the people went on toward the desert.

24 C ’era anche Sadoc con tutti i Leviti, i quali portavano l’arca del patto di Dio. Mentre Abiatar saliva, essi posarono l’arca di Dio, finché tutto il popolo non ebbe finito di uscire dalla città.

Zadok came also, with all the Levites who carried the special box with the Law of God. Abiathar had the special box of God put down until all the people had passed out of the city.

25 I l re disse a Sadoc: «Riporta in città l’arca di Dio. Se io trovo grazia agli occhi del Signore, egli mi farà tornare e mi farà vedere l’arca e la sua dimora;

The king said to Zadok, “Return the special box of God to the city. If I find favor in the eyes of the Lord, He will have me return. And He will have me see both it and His family.

26 m a se dice: “Io non ti gradisco!”, eccomi, faccia di me quello che egli vorrà».

But if He says, ‘I have no joy in you,’ then here I am. Let Him do to me what He thinks is good.”

27 I l re disse ancora al sacerdote Sadoc: «Vedi? Torna in pace in città con tuo figlio Aimaas e con Gionatan, figlio di Abiatar, i vostri due figli con voi.

And the king said to Zadok the religious leader, “Are you not a man who speaks for God? Return to the city in peace with Abiathar and your two sons, your son Ahimaaz and Abiathar’s son Jonathan.

28 G uardate, io aspetterò nelle pianure del deserto, finché mi sia recata qualche notizia da parte vostra».

See, I will wait in the desert by the place where the river is crossed, until I hear from you.”

29 C osì Sadoc e Abiatar riportarono a Gerusalemme l’arca di Dio e abitarono là.

So Zadok and Abiathar returned the special box of God to Jerusalem and stayed there.

30 D avide saliva il monte degli Ulivi; saliva piangendo e camminava con il capo coperto, a piedi scalzi; e tutta la gente che era con lui aveva il capo coperto e, salendo, piangeva.

David went up the Mount of Olives and cried as he went. His head was covered and he wore no shoes. And all the people who were with him covered their heads and went up crying as they went.

31 Q ualcuno venne a dire a Davide: «Aitofel è con Absalom tra i congiurati». Davide disse: «O Signore, rendi vani i consigli di Aitofel!»

Now David was told, “Ahithophel is among those who are making plans with Absalom.” And David said, “O Lord, I pray, make the words of Ahithophel foolish.”

32 Q uando Davide giunse in vetta al monte, al luogo dove si adora Dio, gli venne incontro Cusai, l’Archita, con la tunica stracciata e il capo coperto di polvere.

As David was coming to the top of the mountain, where God was worshiped, Hushai the Archite met him. His coat was torn and there was dust on his head.

33 D avide gli disse: «Se tu vieni con me, mi sarai di peso;

David said to him, “If you go with me, you will be trouble for me.

34 m a se torni in città e dici ad Absalom: “Io sarò tuo servo, o re; come fui servo di tuo padre nel passato, così sarò adesso servo tuo”, cambierai a mio favore i consigli di Aitofel.

But if you return to the city, you can bring trouble to the words of Ahithophel for me. Say to Absalom, ‘I will be your servant, O king. I will work for you as I have worked for your father in the past.’ Then you can make the words of Ahithophel foolish for me.

35 L aggiù avrai con te i sacerdoti Sadoc e Abiatar. Tutto quello che sentirai dire della casa del re, lo farai sapere ai sacerdoti Sadoc e Abiatar.

Will not Zadok and Abiathar the religious leaders be there with you? Tell Zadok and Abiathar whatever you hear from the king’s house.

36 S iccome essi hanno i loro due figli, Aimaas, figlio di Sadoc, e Gionatan, figlio di Abiatar, per mezzo di loro mi farete sapere tutto quello che avrete sentito».

Their two sons are with them there, Zadok’s son Ahimaaz and Abiathar’s son Jonathan. By them you can send me news of all that you hear.”

37 C osì Cusai, amico di Davide, tornò in città; e Absalom entrò in Gerusalemme.

So David’s friend Hushai came into Jerusalem, just as Absalom was coming into the city.
