1 A conteció después de esto, que Absalón se hizo con carros y caballos, y cincuenta hombres que corriesen delante de él.

After this, Absalom got a war-wagon and horses, and fifty men to run in front of him.

2 Y se levantaba Absalón de mañana, y se ponía a un lado del camino junto a la puerta; y a cualquiera que tenía pleito y venía al rey a juicio, Absalón le llamaba y le decía: ¿De qué ciudad eres? Y él respondía: Tu siervo es de tal tribu de Israel.

He used to get up early and stand beside the way to the gate. When any man had a problem to be decided upon by the king, Absalom would call to him and say, “What city are you from?” And he would answer, “Your servant is from one of the families of Israel.”

3 E ntonces Absalón le decía: Mira, tus palabras son buenas y justas; mas no tienes quien te oiga de parte del rey.

Then Absalom would say to him, “Your side of the problem is good and right. But there is no man to listen to you for the king.”

4 Y decía Absalón: ¡Quién me pusiera por juez en la tierra, para que viniesen a mí todos los que tienen pleito o negocio, que yo les haría justicia!

And Absalom would say, “If only I were chosen to be the one to be judge in the land! Then every man who has a problem could come to me. And I would do for him what is right and fair.”

5 Y acontecía que cuando alguno se acercaba para inclinarse a él, él extendía la mano y lo tomaba, y lo besaba.

When a man came near to put his face to the ground in front of him, Absalom would put out his hand and take hold of him and kiss him.

6 D e esta manera hacía con todos los israelitas que venían al rey a juicio; y así robaba Absalón el corazón de los de Israel.

He acted this way toward all those of Israel who came with a problem for the king to judge. So Absalom became friends with the men of Israel.

7 A l cabo de cuatro años, aconteció que Absalón dijo al rey: Yo te ruego que me permitas ir a Hebrón, a pagar un voto que he prometido a Jehová.

At the end of four years, Absalom said to the king, “I ask you, let me go to Hebron and keep my promise that I have promised to the Lord.

8 P orque tu siervo hizo voto cuando estaba en Gesur en Siria, diciendo: Si Jehová me permite volver a Jerusalén, yo le ofreceré un sacrificio a Jehová.

For your servant made a promise while I was living at Geshur in Syria, saying, ‘If the Lord will bring me again to Jerusalem, then I will serve the Lord.’”

9 Y el rey le dijo: Ve en paz. Y él se levantó, y fue a Hebrón.

And the king said to him, “Go in peace.” So he got up and went to Hebron.

10 E ntonces envió Absalón mensajeros por todas las tribus de Israel, diciendo: Cuando oigáis el sonido de la trompeta diréis: Absalón reina en Hebrón.

But Absalom sent men to go in secret through all the families of Israel. He said to them, “As soon as you hear the sound of the horn, then say, ‘Absalom is king at Hebron.’”

11 Y fueron con Absalón doscientos hombres de Jerusalén invitados por él, los cuales iban en su sencillez, sin saber nada.

With Absalom went 200 men from Jerusalem. They had been asked to come, and did not know what Absalom had planned.

12 Y Absalón mandó llamar a Ahitófel gilonita, consejero de David, de su ciudad de Gilo y lo tuvo consigo mientras ofrecía los sacrificios. Y la conspiración se hizo poderosa, y aumentaba el pueblo que seguía a Absalón.

While Absalom was giving gifts on the altar in worship, he sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, from his city Giloh. He was the man who talked with David about what to do. The plans against David became strong. For more and more people joined Absalom. David Runs from Jerusalem

13 Y un mensajero vino a David, diciendo: El corazón de todo Israel se va tras Absalón.

Then a man came to David with news, saying, “The hearts of the men of Israel are with Absalom.”

14 E ntonces David dijo a todos sus siervos que estaban con él en Jerusalén: Levantaos y huyamos, porque no podremos escapar delante de Absalón; daos prisa a partir, no sea que apresurándose él nos alcance, eche el mal sobre nosotros y hiera la ciudad a filo de espada.

David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem, “Get up and let us run. Or else none of us will be safe from Absalom. Hurry and go, or he will be quick to catch us and bring trouble upon us. He would destroy the city with the sword.”

15 Y los siervos del rey dijeron al rey: He aquí, tus siervos están listos para todo lo que nuestro señor el rey decida.

The king’s servants said to him, “See, your servants are ready to do whatever my lord the king chooses.”

16 E l rey entonces salió, con toda su familia en pos de él. Y dejó el rey diez mujeres concubinas, para que guardasen la casa.

So the king left with all those of his house. But he left ten of his women to take care of the house.

17 S alió, pues, el rey con todo el pueblo que le seguía, y se detuvieron en un lugar distante.

The king left with all the people, and they stopped at the last house.

18 Y todos sus siervos pasaban a su lado, con todos los cereteos y peleteos; y todos los geteos, seiscientos hombres que habían venido a pie desde Gat, iban delante del rey.

All his servants passed by him, and all the Cherethites, Pelethites, Gittites, and 600 men who had come with him from Gath. They all passed by the king.

19 Y dijo el rey a Itay geteo: ¿Para qué vienes tú también con nosotros? Vuélvete y quédate con el rey; porque tú eres extranjero, y desterrado también de tu lugar.

Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, “Why do you go with us also? Return and stay with the king. For you are from another land and have been driven from your home.

20 A yer viniste, ¿y he de hacer hoy que salgas errante con nosotros? En cuanto a mí, yo iré adonde pueda ir; tú vuélvete, y haz volver a tus hermanos; y Jehová te muestre amor permanente y fidelidad.

You came only yesterday. Should I make you go with us today, when I do not know where I am going? Return with your brothers. May loving-kindness and faith be with you.”

21 Y respondió Itay al rey, diciendo: Vive Dios, y vive mi señor el rey, que o para muerte o para vida, donde mi señor el rey esté, allí estará también tu siervo.

But Ittai said to the king, “As the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, your servant will be where my lord the king may be, in death or in life.”

22 E ntonces David dijo a Itay: Ven, pues, y pasa. Y pasó Itay geteo, y todos sus hombres, y toda su familia.

So David said to him, “Go then, pass on.” And Ittai the Gittite passed on, with all his men and all the little ones who were with him.

23 Y todo el país lloró en alta voz; pasó luego toda la gente el torrente de Cedrón; asimismo pasó el rey, y todo el pueblo pasó al camino que va al desierto.

All the country was crying with a loud voice as all the people passed by. The king crossed the river Kidron, and all the people went on toward the desert.

24 Y he aquí, también iba Sadoc, y con él todos los levitas que llevaban el arca del pacto de Dios; y asentaron el arca del pacto de Dios. Y subió Abiatar después que todo el pueblo acabó de salir de la ciudad.

Zadok came also, with all the Levites who carried the special box with the Law of God. Abiathar had the special box of God put down until all the people had passed out of the city.

25 P ero dijo el rey a Sadoc: Vuelve el arca de Dios a la ciudad. Si yo hallo gracia ante los ojos de Jehová, él hará que yo vuelva, y permitirá que pueda verla de nuevo en su tabernáculo.

The king said to Zadok, “Return the special box of God to the city. If I find favor in the eyes of the Lord, He will have me return. And He will have me see both it and His family.

26 Y si dice: No me has agradado; aquí estoy, haga de mí lo que bien le parezca.

But if He says, ‘I have no joy in you,’ then here I am. Let Him do to me what He thinks is good.”

27 D ijo además el rey al sacerdote Sadoc: ¿No eres tú el vidente? Vuelve en paz a la ciudad, y con vosotros vuestros dos hijos; Ahimaas tu hijo, y Jonatán hijo de Abiatar.

And the king said to Zadok the religious leader, “Are you not a man who speaks for God? Return to the city in peace with Abiathar and your two sons, your son Ahimaaz and Abiathar’s son Jonathan.

28 M irad, yo me detendré en los vados del desierto, hasta que venga respuesta de vosotros que me dé aviso.

See, I will wait in the desert by the place where the river is crossed, until I hear from you.”

29 E ntonces Sadoc y Abiatar volvieron el arca de Dios a Jerusalén, y se quedaron allí.

So Zadok and Abiathar returned the special box of God to Jerusalem and stayed there.

30 Y David subió la cuesta de los Olivos; y la subía llorando, llevando la cabeza cubierta y los pies descalzos. También todo el pueblo que tenía consigo cubrió cada uno su cabeza, e iban llorando mientras subían.

David went up the Mount of Olives and cried as he went. His head was covered and he wore no shoes. And all the people who were with him covered their heads and went up crying as they went.

31 Y dieron aviso a David, diciendo: Ahitófel está entre los que conspiraron con Absalón. Entonces dijo David: Entorpece ahora, oh Jehová, el consejo de Ahitófel.

Now David was told, “Ahithophel is among those who are making plans with Absalom.” And David said, “O Lord, I pray, make the words of Ahithophel foolish.”

32 C uando David llegó a la cumbre del monte para adorar allí a Dios, he aquí que Husay arquita le salió al encuentro, rasgados sus vestidos, y cubierta de tierra su cabeza.

As David was coming to the top of the mountain, where God was worshiped, Hushai the Archite met him. His coat was torn and there was dust on his head.

33 Y le dijo David: Si pasas conmigo, me serás carga.

David said to him, “If you go with me, you will be trouble for me.

34 M as si te vuelves a la ciudad, y dices a Absalón: Rey, yo seré tu siervo; como hasta aquí he sido siervo de tu padre, así seré ahora siervo tuyo; entonces tú harás fracasar el plan de Ahitófel.

But if you return to the city, you can bring trouble to the words of Ahithophel for me. Say to Absalom, ‘I will be your servant, O king. I will work for you as I have worked for your father in the past.’ Then you can make the words of Ahithophel foolish for me.

35 ¿ No estarán allí contigo los sacerdotes Sadoc y Abiatar? Por tanto, todo lo que oigas en la casa del rey, se lo comunicarás a los sacerdotes Sadoc y Abiatar.

Will not Zadok and Abiathar the religious leaders be there with you? Tell Zadok and Abiathar whatever you hear from the king’s house.

36 Y he aquí que están con ellos sus dos hijos, Ahimaas el de Sadoc, y Jonatán el de Abiatar; por medio de ellos me enviaréis aviso de todo lo que oigáis.

Their two sons are with them there, Zadok’s son Ahimaaz and Abiathar’s son Jonathan. By them you can send me news of all that you hear.”

37 A sí vino Husay amigo de David a la ciudad; y Absalón entró en Jerusalén.

So David’s friend Hushai came into Jerusalem, just as Absalom was coming into the city.
