1 M oraba Israel en Sitim; y el pueblo empezó a fornicar con las hijas de Moab,

While Israel stayed at Shittim, the people were not faithful to the Lord and began to have sex with the daughters of Moab.

2 l as cuales invitaban al pueblo a los sacrificios de sus dioses; y el pueblo comió, y se inclinó a sus dioses.

They asked the people of Israel to bring gifts to their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.

3 A sí acudió el pueblo a Baal-peor; y el furor de Jehová se encendió contra Israel.

So Israel joined themselves to Baal of Peor, and the Lord was angry with Israel.

4 Y Jehová dijo a Moisés: Toma a todos los príncipes del pueblo, y ahórcalos ante Jehová delante del sol, y el ardor de la ira de Jehová se apartará de Israel.

The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people, kill them, and put their bodies in the bright daylight before the Lord. Then the strong anger of the Lord may turn away from Israel.”

5 E ntonces Moisés dijo a los jueces de Israel: Matad cada uno a aquellos de los vuestros que se han juntado con Baal-peor.

So Moses said to the judges of Israel, “Each of you kill his men who have joined themselves to Baal of Peor.”

6 Y he aquí un varón de los hijos de Israel vino y trajo una madianita a sus hermanos, a ojos de Moisés y de toda la congregación de los hijos de Israel, mientras lloraban ellos a la puerta del tabernáculo de reunión.

Then one of the people of Israel came and brought a Midianite woman to his family. Moses and all the people of Israel saw this while they were crying at the door of the meeting tent.

7 Y lo vio Fineés hijo de Eleazar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón, y se levantó de en medio de la congregación, y tomó una lanza en su mano;

When Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the religious leader, saw it, he rose up from among the people. He took a spear in his hand

8 y fue tras el varón de Israel a la tienda, y los alanceó a ambos, al varón de Israel, y a la mujer por su vientre. Y cesó la mortandad de los hijos de Israel.

and went after the man of Israel into the tent. Then he cut through the bodies of both the man of Israel and the woman. So the very bad disease that spread on the people of Israel was stopped.

9 Y murieron de aquella mortandad veinticuatro mil.

Those who died because of this bad disease were 24, 000.

10 E ntonces Jehová habló a Moisés, diciendo:

Then the Lord said to Moses,

11 F ineés hijo de Eleazar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón, ha hecho apartar mi furor de los hijos de Israel, llevado de celo entre ellos; por lo cual yo no he consumido en mi celo a los hijos de Israel.

“Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the religious leader, has turned My anger away from the people of Israel. He was jealous with My jealousy among them, so I did not destroy the people of Israel in My jealousy.

12 P or tanto diles: He aquí yo establezco mi pacto de paz con él;

So say to them that I make My agreement of peace with Phinehas.

13 y tendrá él, y su descendencia después de él, el pacto del sacerdocio perpetuo, por cuanto tuvo celo por su Dios e hizo expiación por los hijos de Israel.

It will be an agreement for him and his children after him that they will always be religious leaders, because he was jealous for his God, and did what he was to do to pay for the sin of the people of Israel.”

14 Y el nombre del varón que fue muerto con la madianita era Zimrí hijo de Salú, jefe de una familia de la tribu de Simeón.

The name of the man of Israel who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri the son of Salu. He was a leader of a father’s house among the Simeonites.

15 Y el nombre de la mujer madianita muerta era Cozbí hija de Zur, príncipe de pueblos, padre de familia en Madián.

The name of the Midianite woman who was killed was Cozbi the daughter of Zur. Zur was the head of the people of a father’s house in Midian.

16 Y Jehová habló a Moisés, diciendo:

The Lord said to Moses,

17 H ostigad a los madianitas, y heridlos,

“Be angry at the Midianites and fight against them.

18 p or cuanto ellos os afligieron a vosotros con sus ardides con que os han engañado en lo tocante a Baal-peor, y en lo tocante a Cozbí hija del príncipe de Madián, su hermana, la cual fue muerta el día de la mortandad por causa de Baal-peor.

For they have brought trouble to you with their false ways. They have fooled you and turned you to the wrong way. They have brought you trouble at Peor with Cozbi, the daughter of the leader of Midian, their sister. She was killed on the day the very bad disease came because of Peor.”
