1 B alaam disse a Balac: «Costruiscimi qui sette altari e preparami qui sette tori e sette montoni».

Then Balaam said to Balak, “Build seven altars here for me. And make ready seven bulls and seven rams for me here.”

2 B alac fece come Balaam aveva detto, e Balac e Balaam offrirono un toro e un montone su ciascun altare.

Balak did as Balaam had said. Balak and Balaam gave a bull and a ram on each altar in worship.

3 E Balaam disse a Balac: «Sta’ vicino al tuo olocausto e io mi allontanerò; forse il Signore mi verrà incontro; e io riferirò quello che mi avrà fatto vedere»; e andò sopra una nuda altura.

Then Balaam said to Balak, “Stand beside your burnt gift, and I will go. It might be that the Lord will come to me. And whatever He shows me I will tell you.” So he went up to a hill without trees.

4 D io venne incontro a Balaam, e Balaam gli disse: «Io ho preparato i sette altari e ho offerto un toro e un montone su ciascun altare».

God met Balaam. Balaam said to Him, “I have made seven altars. And I have given a bull and a ram on each altar in worship.”

5 A llora il Signore mise delle parole in bocca a Balaam e gli disse: «Torna da Balac e parla così».

Then the Lord put words in Balaam’s mouth, and said, “Return to Balak. This is what you should say.”

6 B alaam tornò da Balac, ed ecco che questi stava vicino al suo olocausto con tutti i prìncipi di Moab.

So Balaam returned to Balak, and saw him and all the leaders of Moab standing beside his burnt gift.

7 A llora Balaam pronunciò il suo oracolo: «Balac mi ha fatto venire da Aram, il re di Moab mi ha chiamato dalle montagne d’Oriente. Vieni, disse, maledici Giacobbe per me! Vieni, impreca contro Israele!

Balaam began speaking and said, “Balak the king of Moab has brought me from Aram, from the mountains of the east. ‘Come, curse Jacob for me,’ he said. ‘Come, say that Israel should be punished!’

8 C ome farò a maledirlo se Dio non l’ha maledetto? Come farò a imprecare se il Signore non ha imprecato?

How can I curse those whom God has not cursed? How can I say that those should be punished whom God has not said should be punished?

9 I o lo guardo dalla sommità delle rupi e lo contemplo dall’alto dei colli; ecco, è un popolo che dimora solo e non è contato nel numero delle nazioni.

I see Israel from the top of the rocks. I look at them from the hills. See, the people live apart. They will not be thought of as one of the nations.

10 C hi può contare la polvere di Giacobbe o calcolare il quarto d’Israele? Possa io morire della morte dei giusti e possa la mia fine essere simile alla loro!»

Who can number the dust of Jacob, or number the fourth part of Israel? Let me die the death of those who are right and good. Let my end be like theirs!”

11 A llora Balac disse a Balaam: «Che mi hai fatto? Ti ho preso per maledire i miei nemici ed ecco, non hai fatto che benedirli».

Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I took you to curse those who hate me. But see, you have asked that good would come to them!”

12 L ’altro gli rispose e disse: «Non devo forse stare attento a dire soltanto ciò che il Signore mi mette in bocca?»

Balaam answered, “Must I not be careful to speak what the Lord puts in my mouth?” Balaam Tells What Will Happen the Second Time

13 E Balac gli disse: «Ti prego, vieni con me in un altro luogo, da dove tu lo potrai vedere; tu di qui non ne puoi vedere che una parte; non lo puoi vedere tutto quanto; di là me lo maledirai».

Balak said to him, “I beg you, come with me to another place from where you will see them. But you will only see a part of them and not all of them. Curse them for me from there.”

14 E lo condusse al campo di Sofim, sulla cima del Pisga; costruì sette altari e offrì un toro e un montone su ciascun altare.

So he took him to the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah. He built seven altars and gave a bull and a ram on each altar.

15 E Balaam disse a Balac: «Stattene qui vicino al tuo olocausto, e io andrò a incontrare il Signore ».

Balaam said to Balak, “Stand here beside your burnt gift, while I meet the Lord over there.”

16 E il Signore venne incontro a Balaam, gli mise delle parole in bocca e gli disse: «Torna da Balac e parla così».

The Lord met Balaam and put words in his mouth and said, “Return to Balak. This is what you should say.”

17 B alaam tornò da Balac, ed ecco che questi stava presso il suo olocausto, con i prìncipi di Moab. E Balac gli disse: «Che ha detto il Signore ?»

So he returned to Balak, and saw him and all the leaders of Moab standing beside his burnt gift. Balak said to him, “What has the Lord said?”

18 A llora Balaam pronunciò il suo oracolo e disse: «Àlzati, Balac, e ascolta! Porgimi orecchio, figlio di Sippor!

Then Balaam began speaking and said, “Rise, O Balak, and hear! Listen to me, O son of Zippor!

19 D io non è un uomo, da poter mentire, né un figlio d’uomo, da doversi pentire. Quando ha detto una cosa non la farà? O quando ha parlato non manterrà la parola?

God is not a man, that He should lie. He is not a son of man, that He should be sorry for what He has said. Has He said, and will He not do it? Has He spoken, and will He not keep His Word?

20 E cco, ho ricevuto l’ordine di benedire; egli ha benedetto; io non posso contraddire.

See, I have been told to speak good of Israel. When He has spoken good of them, I cannot change it.

21 E gli non scorge iniquità in Giacobbe, non vede perversità in Israele. Il Signore, il suo Dio, è con lui e Israele lo acclama come suo re.

No hard times are seen in Jacob. No trouble is seen in Israel. The Lord their God is with them. And the cry of a king is among them.

22 D io lo ha fatto uscire dall’Egitto e gli dà il vigore del bufalo.

God brings them out of Egypt. He is for them like the horns of the wild bull.

23 I n Giacobbe non c’è magia, in Israele non c’è divinazione; a suo tempo viene detto a Giacobbe e a Israele qual è l’opera che Dio compie.

For there is no special thing that has been shown against Jacob. Nothing has told of a bad future for Israel. Now it will be said of Jacob and Israel, ‘Look what God has done!’

24 E cco un popolo che si leva come una leonessa e si alza come un leone; egli non si sdraia prima di aver divorato la preda e bevuto il sangue delle sue vittime».

See, people rise like a female lion. It lifts itself like a lion. It will not lie down until it eats the food it has killed, and drinks the blood of the kill.”

25 A llora Balac disse a Balaam: «Non lo maledire, ma almeno non benedire».

Balak said to Balaam, “Do not curse them at all or pray that good would come to them!”

26 M a Balaam rispose e disse a Balac: «Non ti ho forse detto: “Io farò tutto quello che il Signore dirà”?»

But Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not tell you that I must do whatever the Lord says?” Balaam Tells What Will Happen the Third Time

27 B alac disse a Balaam: «Ti prego, vieni, io ti condurrò in un altro luogo; forse piacerà a Dio che tu me lo maledica di là».

Then Balak said to Balaam, “I beg you, come. I will take you to another place. It might be that God will be pleased to have you curse them for me from there.”

28 B alac dunque condusse Balaam in cima al Peor, che domina il deserto.

So Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor which looks over the desert.

29 E Balaam disse a Balac: «Costruiscimi qui sette altari e preparami qui sette tori e sette montoni».

Balaam said to Balak, “Build seven altars for me here. And make ready seven bulls and seven rams for me here.”

30 B alac fece come Balaam aveva detto, e offrì un toro e un montone su ciascun altare.

Balak did just as Balaam had said. He gave a bull and a ram on each altar in worship.
