1 P oi il Signore disse a Mosè: «Vendica il male che i Madianiti hanno fatto ai figli d’Israele;

The Lord said to Moses,

2 p oi sarai riunito ai tuoi padri».

“Punish the Midianites for the people of Israel. After that you will be buried with your people.”

3 A llora Mosè disse al popolo: «Mobilitate fra voi degli uomini per la guerra, e marcino contro Madian per eseguire la vendetta del Signore su Madian.

Then Moses said to the people, “Take men from among you and make them ready for war against Midian. They will punish Midian for the Lord.

4 M anderete alla guerra mille uomini per ciascuna delle tribù d’Israele».

Send to the war 1, 000 men from each of all the family groups of Israel.”

5 C osì furono forniti, dalle schiere d’Israele, mille uomini per tribù: cioè dodicimila uomini, armati per la guerra.

So 1, 000 men came from each of the family groups of the thousands of Israel. There were 12, 000 ready for war.

6 M osè mandò alla guerra quei mille uomini per tribù, e con loro Fineas, figlio del sacerdote Eleazar, il quale portava gli oggetti sacri e aveva in mano le trombe squillanti.

Moses sent them, 1, 000 from each family group, to the war. Phinehas the son of Eleazar the religious leader went to the war with them. In his hand were the holy objects and the horns for blowing the sound of coming danger.

7 E ssi marciarono dunque contro Madian, come il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè, e uccisero tutti i maschi.

So the men made war against Midian, just as the Lord had told Moses, and they killed every male.

8 U ccisero pure, con tutti gli altri, i re di Madian: Evi, Rechem, Sur, Cur e Reba, cinque re di Madian. Uccisero pure con la spada Balaam, figlio di Beor.

They killed the five kings of Midian with the sword also, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba. And they also killed Balaam the son of Beor with the sword.

9 I figli d’Israele presero prigioniere le donne di Madian e i loro bambini, predarono tutto il loro bestiame, tutte le loro greggi e ogni loro bene;

The people of Israel took the women of Midian and their little ones, and all their cattle, all their flocks, and all the good things that belonged to them.

10 a ppiccarono il fuoco a tutte le città che quelli abitavano e a tutti i loro accampamenti,

Then they burned all their cities where they lived and all their tents.

11 e presero tutte le spoglie e tutta la preda: gente e bestiame.

They took all that was left of both man and animal.

12 P oi condussero i prigionieri, la preda e le spoglie a Mosè, al sacerdote Eleazar e alla comunità dei figli d’Israele, accampati nelle pianure di Moab, presso il Giordano di fronte a Gerico.

And they brought the people they had taken and the animals and whatever belonged to them to Moses, and to Eleazar the religious leader, and to the people of Israel. Their tents were on the plains of Moab by the Jordan near Jericho.

13 M osè, il sacerdote Eleazar e tutti i capi della comunità uscirono per incontrarli fuori dal campo.

Moses and Eleazar the religious leader and all the leaders of the people went out from the tents to meet them.

14 M osè si adirò contro i comandanti dell’esercito, capi di migliaia e capi di centinaia, che tornavano da quella spedizione di guerra.

Moses was angry with the leaders of the army, the heads of thousands and the heads of hundreds, who had fought in the war.

15 M osè disse loro: «Avete lasciato la vita a tutte le donne?

He said to them, “Have you allowed all the women to live?

16 E cco, sono esse che, per suggerimento di Balaam, trascinarono i figli d’Israele all’infedeltà verso il Signore, nel fatto di Peor, per cui il flagello scoppiò nella comunità del Signore.

See, these women listened to Balaam and caused the people of Israel to sin against the Lord in what happened at Peor. So the very bad disease came to the people of the Lord.

17 O ra dunque uccidete ogni maschio tra i bambini, e uccidete ogni donna che ha avuto rapporti sessuali con un uomo;

Now kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has had a man.

18 m a tutte le fanciulle che non hanno avuto rapporti sessuali con uomini lasciatele in vita per voi.

But keep alive for yourselves all the girls who have not had a man.

19 « E voi accampatevi per sette giorni fuori del campo; chiunque ha ucciso qualcuno e chiunque ha toccato una persona uccisa si purifichi il terzo e il settimo giorno: questo tanto per voi quanto per i vostri prigionieri.

Stay away from the tents for seven days. If you have killed any person or have touched any dead body, you must make yourself and those you have taken clean, on the third day and on the seventh day.

20 P urificherete anche ogni veste, ogni oggetto di pelle, ogni tessuto di pelo di capra e ogni utensile di legno».

You must clean every piece of clothing, everything made of leather, everything made of goats’ hair, and everything made of wood.”

21 I l sacerdote Eleazar disse ai soldati che erano andati alla guerra: «Queste sono le disposizioni della legge che il Signore ha prescritto a Mosè:

Then Eleazar the religious leader said to the men of war who had gone to battle, “This is the Law which the Lord has told Moses.

22 l ’oro, l’argento, il bronzo, il ferro, lo stagno e il piombo,

Take the gold, silver, brass, iron, tin and lead,

23 t utte le cose che resistono al fuoco, le farete passare per il fuoco e saranno rese pure; ma saranno purificate anche con l’acqua di purificazione; e tutte le cose che non resistono al fuoco, le farete passare nell’acqua.

everything that can last through fire. Pass it through the fire, and it will be clean. But it must be made pure with the water for cleaning. Whatever cannot last through fire you must pass through the water.

24 V i laverete le vesti il settimo giorno e sarete puri; poi potrete entrare nel campo».

You must wash your clothes on the seventh day, and you will be clean. Then you may come among the tents.”

25 I l Signore disse ancora a Mosè:

The Lord said to Moses,

26 « Tu, con il sacerdote Eleazar e con i capi famiglia della comunità, fa’ il conto di tutta la preda che è stata fatta: della gente e del bestiame;

“You and Eleazar the religious leader and the heads of the fathers’ houses of the people should number all that was taken from the battle, both of man and animal.

27 e dividi la preda fra i combattenti, che sono andati in guerra, e tutta la comunità.

Divide what was taken between the men of war who went to battle and all the people.

28 D alla parte spettante ai soldati, che sono andati in guerra, preleverai un tributo per il Signore: cioè uno su cinquecento, tanto delle persone quanto dei buoi, degli asini e delle pecore.

Then take a tax for the Lord from the men of war who went out to battle. Take one out of 500 of the persons and the cattle and the donkeys and the sheep.

29 L o prenderete sulla loro metà e lo darai al sacerdote Eleazar come offerta al Signore.

Take this from their half and give it to Eleazar the religious leader, as a gift to the Lord.

30 D alla metà che spetta ai figli d’Israele prenderai uno su cinquanta, tanto delle persone quanto dei buoi, degli asini, delle pecore, di tutto il bestiame e lo darai ai Leviti, che hanno l’incarico del tabernacolo del Signore ».

From the half belonging to the people of Israel, take one out of every fifty of the persons and cattle and donkeys and sheep and all the animals. Give them to the Levites who take care of the meeting tent of the Lord.”

31 M osè e il sacerdote Eleazar fecero come il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè.

Moses and Eleazar the religious leader did just as the Lord had told Moses.

32 O r la preda, cioè quello che rimaneva del bottino fatto dagli uomini che erano stati alla guerra, consisteva in seicentosettantacinquemila pecore,

What was left from that which the men of war had taken was 675, 000 sheep,

33 s ettantaduemila buoi, sessantunmila asini

72, 000 cattle,

34 e trentaduemila persone, ossia donne

61, 000 donkeys,

35 c he non avevano avuto rapporti sessuali con uomini.

and 32, 000 persons in all, of women who had never had a man.

36 L a metà, cioè la parte di quelli che erano andati alla guerra, fu di trecentotrentasettemilacinquecento pecore,

The half taken by those who went out to war was 337, 500 sheep.

37 d elle quali seicentosettantacinque per il tributo al Signore;

The Lord’s tax was 675 sheep.

38 t rentaseimila bovini, dei quali settantadue per il tributo al Signore;

There were 36, 000 cattle, from which the Lord’s tax was seventy-two.

39 t rentamilacinquecento asini, dei quali sessantuno per il tributo al Signore,

There were 30, 500 donkeys, from which the Lord’s tax was sixty-one.

40 e sedicimila persone, delle quali trentadue per il tributo al Signore.

And there were 16, 000 persons, from whom the Lord’s tax was thirty-two.

41 M osè diede al sacerdote Eleazar il tributo prelevato per l’offerta al Signore, come il Signore gli aveva ordinato.

Moses gave the tax, which was the Lord’s gift, to Eleazar the religious leader, just as the Lord had told Moses.

42 L a metà che spettava ai figli d’Israele, dopo che Mosè ebbe fatta la spartizione con gli uomini andati alla guerra, la metà spettante alla comunità

Moses divided the people of Israel’s half from the men who had gone to war.

43 f u di trecentotrentasettemilacinquecento pecore,

The people’s half was 337, 500 sheep,

44 t rentaseimila buoi,

36, 000 cattle,

45 t rentamilacinquecento asini e sedicimila persone.

30, 500 donkeys,

46 D a questa metà,

and 16, 000 persons.

47 c he spettava ai figli d’Israele, Mosè prese uno su cinquanta, tanto degli uomini quanto degli animali, e li diede ai Leviti che hanno l’incarico del tabernacolo del Signore, come il Signore aveva ordinato a Mosè.

Moses took one out of every fifty of both man and animal from the people of Israel’s half. He gave them to the Levites, who took care of the meeting tent of the Lord, just as the Lord had told Moses.

48 I comandanti dei reparti dell’esercito, capi di migliaia e capi di centinaia, si avvicinarono a Mosè e gli dissero:

Then the leaders of the thousands of the army, the heads of thousands and the heads of hundreds, came to Moses.

49 « I tuoi servi hanno fatto il conto dei soldati che erano ai nostri ordini e non ne manca neppure uno.

They said to him, “Your servants have numbered the men of war whom we lead. Not one man is missing from us.

50 N oi portiamo, come offerta al Signore, ciascuno gli oggetti d’oro che ha trovato: catenelle, braccialetti, anelli, pendenti, collane, per fare l’espiazione per le nostre persone davanti al Signore ».

We have brought as a gift to the Lord what each man found, objects of gold, things to be worn on the arms and fingers and ears and necks. They are to pay for our sins before the Lord.”

51 M osè e il sacerdote Eleazar presero dalle loro mani tutto quell’oro in gioielli lavorati.

Moses and Eleazar the religious leader took the gold from them, all the objects made of beaten gold.

52 T utto l’oro dell’offerta che essi presentarono al Signore, da parte dei capi di migliaia e dei capi di centinaia, pesava sedicimilasettecentocinquanta sicli.

All the gold of the gift they gave to the Lord from the heads of thousands and the heads of hundreds was worth 16, 750 gold pieces.

53 M a gli uomini dell’esercito si tennero il bottino che ognuno aveva fatto per conto suo.

For the men of war had taken things from the battle, every man for himself.

54 M osè e il sacerdote Eleazar presero l’oro dei capi di migliaia e di centinaia e lo portarono nella tenda di convegno per ricordare al Signore i figli d’Israele.

So Moses and Eleazar the religious leader took the gold from the heads of thousands and of hundreds. They brought it to the meeting tent so that the people of Israel would be remembered before the Lord.
