1 A nd it came to pass after the plague, that Jehovah spoke to Moses and to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, saying,

After the very bad disease came on the people because of Israel’s sin, the Lord said to Moses and Eleazar the son of Aaron the religious leader,

2 T ake the sum of the whole assembly of the children of Israel, from twenty years old and upward, according to their fathers' houses, all that go forth to military service in Israel.

“Add the numbers of all the people of Israel who are twenty years old and older, by their fathers’ houses. Number whoever in Israel is able to go to war.”

3 A nd Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan of Jericho, saying,

So Moses and Eleazar the religious leader said to the people in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho,

4 F rom twenty years old and upward …; as Jehovah had commanded Moses and the children of Israel, who went forth out of the land of Egypt.

“Number the people who are twenty years old and older, as the Lord has told Moses.” Now these were the sons of Israel who came out of the land of Egypt.

5 R euben, the firstborn of Israel: the children of Reuben: Enoch, the family of the Enochites; of Pallu, the family of the Palluites;

Reuben was the first-born son of Israel. Reuben’s sons were the family of the Hanochites from Hanoch, the family of the Palluites from Pallu,

6 o f Hezron, the family of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the family of the Carmites.

7 T hese are the families of the Reubenites; and they that were numbered of them were forty-three thousand seven hundred and thirty.

8 A nd the sons of Pallu: Eliab;

Eliab was the son of Pallu.

9 a nd the sons of Eliab were Nemuel, and Dathan, and Abiram. This is that Dathan and Abiram, summoned of the assembly, who contended against Moses and against Aaron in the band of Korah, when they contended against Jehovah.

The sons of Eliab were Nemuel, Dathan and Abiram. These are Dathan and Abiram who were chosen by the people and who joined with Korah to argue against Moses and Aaron. They argued against the Lord,

10 A nd the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up together with Korah, when that band died, when the fire devoured the two hundred and fifty men; and they became a sign.

11 B ut the children of Korah died not.

But the sons of Korah did not die.

12 T he sons of Simeon, after their families: of Nemuel, the family of the Nemuelites; of Jamin, the family of the Jaminites; of Jachin, the family of the Jachinites;

22 T hese are the families of Judah according to those that were numbered of them, seventy-six thousand five hundred.

23 T he sons of Issachar, after their families: of Tola, the family of the Tolaites; of Puah, the family of the Punites;

26 T he sons of Zebulun, after their families: of Sered, the family of the Sardites; of Elon, the family of the Elonites; of Jahleel, the family of the Jahleelites.

The sons of Zebulun by their families were the family of the Seredites from Sered, the family of the Elonites from Elon, and the family of the Jahleelites from Jahleel.

27 T hese are the families of the Zebulunites according to those that were numbered of them, sixty thousand five hundred.

28 T he sons of Joseph, after their families: Manasseh and Ephraim.

The sons of Joseph by their families were Manasseh and Ephraim.

29 T he sons of Manasseh: of Machir, the family of the Machirites (and Machir begot Gilead); of Gilead, the family of the Gileadites.

The sons of Manasseh were the family of the Machirites from Machir, and the family of the Gileadites from Gilead. Machir was the father of Gilead.

30 T hese are the sons of Gilead: of Jeezer, the family of the Jeezerites; of Helek, the family of the Helkites;

35 T hese are the sons of Ephraim, after their families: of Shuthelah, the family of the Shuthalhites; of Becher, the family of the Bachrites; of Tahan, the family of the Tahanites.

36 A nd these are the sons of Shuthelah: of Eran, the family of the Eranites.

37 T hese are the families of the sons of Ephraim according to those that were numbered of them, thirty-two thousand five hundred. These are the sons of Joseph after their families.

38 T he sons of Benjamin, after their families: of Bela, the family of the Belaites; of Ashbel, the family of the Ashbelites; of Ahiram, the family of the Ahiramites;

43 A ll the families of the Shuhamites, according to those that were numbered of them, were sixty-four thousand four hundred.

The number of all the families of the Shuhamites was 64, 400.

44 T he sons of Asher, after their families: of Jimnah, the family of the Jimnites; of Jishvi, the family of the Jishvites; of Beriah, the family of the Beriites.

The sons of Asher by their families were the family of the Imnites from Imnah, the family of the Ishvites from Ishvi, and the family of the Beriites from Beriah.

45 O f the sons of Beriah: of Heber, the family of the Heberites; of Malchiel, the family of the Malchielites.

46 A nd the name of the daughter of Asher was Serah.

The name of Asher’s daughter was Serah.

47 T hese are the families of the sons of Asher according to those that were numbered of them, fifty-three thousand four hundred.

48 T he sons of Naphtali, after their families: of Jahzeel, the family of the Jahzeelites; of Guni, the family of the Gunites;

The sons of Naphtali by their families were the family of the Jahzeelites from Jahzeel, the family of the Gunites from Guni,

49 o f Jezer, the family of the Jezerites; of Shillem, the family of the Shillemites.

50 T hese are the families of Naphtali, according to their families; and they that were numbered of them were forty-five thousand four hundred.

These are the families of Naphtali by their families. Their number was 45, 400.

51 T hese were the numbered of the children of Israel, six hundred and one thousand seven hundred and thirty.

Those who were numbered of the sons of Israel were 601, 730.

52 A nd Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

The Lord said to Moses,

53 U nto these shall the land be divided for an inheritance according to the number of the names;

“The land will be divided among these people by the number of names.

54 t o the many thou shalt increase their inheritance, and to the few thou shalt diminish their inheritance; to every one shall his inheritance be given according to those that were numbered of him.

Give more land to the larger group. Give less land to the smaller group. Each family should be given land by the number of its people.

55 N otwithstanding the land shall be divided by lot; according to the names of the tribes of their fathers shall they inherit;

But the land should be divided by drawing names. They will receive their land by the names of the families of their fathers.

56 a ccording to lot shall his inheritance be divided to each, be they many or few in number.

The land will be divided between the larger and smaller groups by the names that are drawn.”

57 A nd these are the numbered of the Levites, after their families: of Gershon, the family of the Gershonites; of Kohath, the family of the Kohathites; of Merari, the family of the Merarites.

Those who were numbered of the Levites by their families were the family of the Gershonites from Gershon, the family of the Kohathites from Kohath, and the family of the Merarites from Merari.

58 T hese are the families of the Levites: the family of the Libnites, the family of the Hebronites, the family of the Mahlites, the family of the Mushites, the family of the Korahites.—And Kohath begot Amram.

The families of Levi were the Libnites, the Hebronites, the Mahlites, the Mushites, and the Korahites. Kohath was the father of Amram.

59 A nd the name of Amram's wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt; and she bore to Amram Aaron and Moses, and Miriam their sister.

The name of Amram’s wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi. She was born to Levi in Egypt. And she gave birth to Amram’s children, Aaron and Moses and their sister Miriam.

60 A nd to Aaron were born Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

Aaron was the father of Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

61 A nd Nadab and Abihu died, when they presented strange fire before Jehovah.

But Nadab and Abihu died when they burned fire that was not holy before the Lord.

62 A nd those that were numbered of the were twenty-three thousand, all males from a month old and upward; for they were not numbered among the children of Israel, because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Israel.

The number of all of their males a month old and older was 23, 000. For they were not numbered among the people of Israel, because no land was given to them among the people of Israel.

63 T hese are they that were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in the plains of Moab, by the Jordan of Jericho.

These are the people who were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the religious leader. They numbered the sons of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.

64 B ut among these there was not a man numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai.

But among all these was not one of those numbered by Moses and Aaron the religious leader when the people of Israel were numbered in the Desert of Sinai.

65 F or Jehovah had said of them, They shall surely die in the wilderness. And there was not left a man of them, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

For the Lord had said of them, “For sure they will die in the desert.” There was not a man left of them, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.
