Genesis 34 ~ Genesis 34

picture

1 A nd Dinah the daughter of Leah, whom she had borne to Jacob, went out to see the daughters of the land.

Now Leah’s daughter Dinah, who was born to Jacob, went out to visit the women of the land.

2 A nd when Shechem, the son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince of the country, saw her, he took her, and lay with her, and humbled her.

And she was seen by Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite, the ruler of the land. He took her and made her lay with him, and she was put to shame.

3 A nd his soul fastened on Dinah the daughter of Jacob, and he loved the maiden, and spoke consolingly to the maiden.

He had much desire for Dinah the daughter of Jacob. He loved the girl and spoke kind words to her.

4 A nd Shechem spoke to his father Hamor, saying, Take me this girl as wife.

So Shechem said to his father Hamor, “Get me this young girl for a wife.”

5 A nd Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter; but his sons were with his cattle in the fields, and Jacob said nothing until they came.

Now Jacob heard that Shechem had put his daughter Dinah to shame. But his sons were with the flocks in the field, so Jacob kept quiet until they returned.

6 A nd Hamor the father of Shechem came out to Jacob, to speak to him.

Then Shechem’s father Hamor went to speak with Jacob.

7 A nd the sons of Jacob came from the fields when they heard; and the men were grieved, and they were very angry, because he had wrought what was disgraceful in Israel, in lying with Jacob's daughter, which thing ought not to be done.

Jacob’s sons returned from the field when they heard what had happened. They were full of sorrow and were angry. For Shechem had put Israel to shame by lying with Jacob’s daughter. Such a thing should not be done.

8 A nd Hamor spoke to them, saying, My son Shechem's soul cleaves to your daughter: I pray you, give her to him as wife.

But Hamor said to them, “The soul of my son Shechem has much desire for your daughter. I ask of you, give her to him in marriage.

9 A nd make marriages with us: give your daughters to us, and take our daughters to you.

Marry with our people. Give your daughters to us. And take our daughters for yourselves.

10 A nd dwell with us, and the land shall be before you: dwell and trade in it, and get yourselves possessions in it.

May you live with us. And the land will be open to you. Live and trade in it, and buy land in it.”

11 A nd Shechem said to her father and to her brethren, Let me find favour in your eyes; and what ye shall say to me I will give.

Then Shechem said to Dinah’s father and brothers, “Let me find favor in your eyes. I will give you whatever you ask.

12 I mpose on me very much as dowry and gift, and I will give according as ye shall say to me; but give me the maiden as wife.

Make your price and wedding gift as much as you want. I will give you as much as you ask. Only give me the girl to be my wife.”

13 A nd the sons of Jacob answered Shechem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and spoke—because he had defiled Dinah their sister—

But Jacob’s sons lied in their answer to Shechem and his father Hamor because he had put their sister Dinah to shame.

14 a nd said to them, We cannot do this, to give our sister to one that is uncircumcised; for that a reproach to us.

They said to them, “We cannot do this. We cannot give our sister to one who has not gone through the religious act of having his flesh cut. For that would be a shame to us.

15 B ut only in this will we consent to you, if ye will be as we, that every male of you be circumcised;

We will give you our sister only if you become like us. Every man among you must have this religious act done.

16 t hen will we give our daughters to you, and take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and be one people.

Then we will give our daughters to you. And we will marry your daughters. We will live with you and become one people.

17 B ut if ye do not hearken to us, to be circumcised, then will we take our daughter and go away.

But if you will not listen to us and have this religious act done, then we will take our daughter and go.”

18 A nd their words were good in the eyes of Hamor and Shechem, Hamor's son.

Their words pleased Hamor and his son Shechem.

19 A nd the youth did not delay to do this, because he had delight in Jacob's daughter. And he was honourable above all in the house of his father.

The young man did not wait to do what they asked, because he was in love with Jacob’s daughter. And he was the most honored of all his family.

20 A nd Hamor and Shechem his son came to the gate of their city, and spoke to the men of their city, saying,

So Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city. And they said to the men of their city,

21 T hese men are peaceable with us; therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade in it. And the land—behold, it is of wide extent before them. We will take their daughters as wives, and give them our daughters.

“These men want to be at peace with us. Let them live in the land and trade in it. For, see, the land is large enough for them. Let us take their daughters in marriage, and give our daughters to them.

22 B ut only in this will the men consent to us to dwell with us, to be one people—if every male among us be circumcised, just as they are circumcised.

But the men will be willing to live with us and become one people only if every man among us goes through the religious act that they have gone through.

23 T heir cattle, and their possessions, and every beast of theirs, shall they not be ours? only let us consent to them, and they will dwell with us.

Will not their cattle and all they own, all their animals, be ours? Let us just do what they ask, and they will live with us.”

24 A nd all that went out at the gate of his city hearkened to Hamor and to Shechem his son; and every male was circumcised—all that went out at the gate of his city.

All who went out of the gate of his city listened to Hamor and his son Shechem. And every man went through the religious act of having his flesh cut, all who went out of the gate of his city.

25 A nd it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males.

But on the third day, when all the men were in pain, two of Jacob’s sons, Simeon and Levi, Dinah’s brothers, took their swords and went into the city in secret. And they killed every man.

26 A nd Hamor and Shechem his son they slew with the edge of the sword; and took Dinah out of Shechem's house; and went out.

They killed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword. And they took Dinah from Shechem’s house and went away.

27 T he sons of Jacob came upon the slain, and plundered the city, because they had defiled their sister.

Then Jacob’s sons went over the dead men and robbed the city of its riches because its men had put their sister to shame.

28 T heir sheep, and their oxen, and their asses, and what in the city, and what in the field they took;

They took their flocks and cattle and donkeys and whatever was in the city and in the field.

29 a nd all their goods, and all their little ones, and their wives took they captive, and plundered them, and all that was in the houses.

They took all their riches, their little ones, their wives, even all that was in the houses.

30 A nd Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, Ye have troubled me, in that ye make me odious among the inhabitants of the land—among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; and I am few men in number, and they will gather themselves against me and smite me, and I shall be destroyed, I and my house.

Then Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, “You have brought trouble on me by making me hated by the people of the land, the Canaanites and Perizzites. My men are few in number. And these people will gather together against me and fight me. I and those of my house will be destroyed.”

31 A nd they said, Should people deal with our sister as with a harlot?

But they said, “Should he act towards our sister as if she were a woman who sells the use of her body?”
