1 Y e are sons of Jehovah your God: ye shall not cut yourselves, nor make any baldness between your eyes for a dead person.

“You are the sons of the Lord your God. Do not cut yourselves or cut the hair from your foreheads because of the dead.

2 F or thou art a holy people unto Jehovah thy God, and thee hath Jehovah chosen for a people of possession unto himself, out of all the peoples that are upon the face of the earth.

For you are a holy nation to the Lord your God. The Lord has chosen you to be His own nation out of all the nations on the earth.

3 T hou shalt not eat any abominable thing.

“Do not eat any hated thing.

4 T hese are the beasts which ye shall eat: the ox, the sheep, and the goat;

These are the animals you may eat: the bull, the sheep, the goat,

5 t he hart, and the gazelle, and the stag, and the wild goat, and the dishon and the oryx, and the wild sheep.

the deer, the gazelle, the roebuck, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope, and the mountain sheep.

6 A nd every beast that hath cloven hoofs, and the feet quite split open into double hoofs, which cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that ye shall eat.

And you may eat any animal that has a parted foot divided in two and that chews its food again.

7 O nly these ye shall not eat of those that chew the cud, or of those with hoofs cloven and split open: the camel, and the hare, and the rock-badger; for they chew the cud, but have not cloven hoofs—they shall be unclean unto you;

But you must not eat of those that chew their food again or have a divided foot: the camel, the rabbit and the rock badger. For though they eat their food again, they do not have a divided foot. They are unclean to you.

8 a nd the swine, for it hath cloven hoofs, yet cheweth not the cud—it shall be unclean unto you. Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch.

And do not eat the pig, because it has a divided foot but does not chew its food again. It is unclean for you. Do not eat any of their flesh or touch their dead bodies.

9 T hese shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales shall ye eat;

“Of all that are in the water, you may eat anything that has fins and scales.

10 b ut whatsoever hath not fins and scales ye shall not eat: it shall be unclean unto you.

But do not eat anything that does not have fins and scales. It is unclean for you.

11 A ll clean birds shall ye eat.

“You may eat any clean bird.

12 B ut these are they of which ye shall not eat: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the sea-eagle,

But these are the ones you may not eat: the eagle, the vulture, the buzzard,

13 a nd the falcon, and the kite, and the black kite after its kind;

the red kite, the falcon, every kind of kite,

14 a nd every raven after its kind;

every kind of raven,

15 a nd the female ostrich, and the male ostrich, and the sea-gull, and the hawk after its kind;

the ostrich, the owl, the sea gull, every kind of hawk,

16 t he owl, and the ibis and the swan,

the little owl, the great owl, the white owl,

17 a nd the pelican, and the carrion vulture, and the gannet,

the pelican, the vulture that eats dead flesh, the cormorant,

18 a nd the stork, and the heron after its kind, and the hoopoe, and the bat.

the stork, every kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.

19 A nd every winged crawling thing shall be unclean unto you; they shall not be eaten.

And all flying bugs are unclean for you. Do not eat them.

20 A ll clean fowls shall ye eat.

But you may eat any clean bird.

21 Y e shall eat of no carcase; thou shalt give it unto the stranger that is within thy gates, that he may eat it, or sell it unto a foreigner; for thou art a holy people to Jehovah thy God. Thou shalt not boil a kid in its mother's milk.

“Do not eat anything that dies of itself. You may give it to the stranger in your town, so he may eat it. Or you may sell it to a person from another land. For you are a holy nation to the Lord your God. “Do not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk. The Law of the Tenth Part

22 T hou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, the produce of the field, year by year.

“Be sure to give a tenth part to the Lord of all you plant that comes from your field every year.

23 A nd thou shalt eat before Jehovah thy God, in the place which he will choose to cause his name to dwell there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy new wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear Jehovah thy God continually.

Before the Lord your God, at the place He chooses to put His name, you may eat the tenth part of your grain, your new wine, your oil, and the first-born of your cattle and your flock. Then you may learn to fear the Lord your God always.

24 A nd if the way be too long for thee, so that thou art not able to carry it, because the place is too far from thee, which Jehovah thy God will choose to set his name there, when Jehovah thy God blesseth thee;

If the place where the Lord your God chooses to put His name is too far away for you to bring the tenth part of all the good things you have received,

25 t hen shalt thou give it for money, and bind the money together in thy hand, and go to the place which Jehovah thy God will choose,

you should trade it for money. Then tie the money in your hand and go to the place which the Lord your God chooses.

26 a nd thou shalt give the money for whatever thy soul desireth, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatever thy soul asketh of thee; and thou shalt eat there before Jehovah thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thy house.

You may spend the money for whatever your heart may desire, for bulls, sheep, wine, strong drink, or whatever you desire. And there you and those of your house may eat before the Lord and be full of joy.

27 A nd thou shalt not forsake the Levite that is within thy gates; for he hath no portion nor inheritance with thee.

Do not stop caring for the Levite who is in your town for he has no share of what is given to you.

28 A t the end of three years thou shalt bring forth all the tithe of thine increase the same year, and shalt lay it up within thy gates;

“At the end of every third year you should bring the tenth part of that year’s grain into your towns.

29 a nd the Levite—for he hath no portion nor inheritance with thee—and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, that are within thy gates, shall come, and shall eat and be satisfied; that Jehovah thy God may bless thee in all the work of thy hand which thou doest.

And the Levite who has no share of what is given to you, and the stranger, and the child without parents, and the woman whose husband has died, who are in your towns, may come and eat and be filled. Then the Lord your God will bring good to you in all the work done by your hands.
