1 ` Sons ye to Jehovah your God; ye do not cut yourselves, nor make baldness between your eyes for the dead;
“You are the sons of the Lord your God. Do not cut yourselves or cut the hair from your foreheads because of the dead.
2 f or a holy people thou to Jehovah thy God, and on thee hath Jehovah fixed to be to Him for a people, a peculiar treasure, out of all the peoples who on the face of the ground.
For you are a holy nation to the Lord your God. The Lord has chosen you to be His own nation out of all the nations on the earth.
3 ` Thou dost not eat any abominable thing;
“Do not eat any hated thing.
4 ` this the beast which ye do eat: ox, lamb of the sheep, or kid of the goats,
These are the animals you may eat: the bull, the sheep, the goat,
5 h art, and roe, and fallow deer, and wild goat, and pygarg, and wild ox, and chamois;
the deer, the gazelle, the roebuck, the wild goat, the ibex, the antelope, and the mountain sheep.
6 a nd every beast dividing the hoof, and cleaving the cleft into two hoofs, bringing up the cud, among the beasts -- it ye do eat.
And you may eat any animal that has a parted foot divided in two and that chews its food again.
7 ` Only, this ye do not eat, of those bringing up the cud, and of those dividing the cloven hoof: the camel, and the hare, and the rabbit, for they are bringing up the cud but the hoof have not divided; unclean they to you;
But you must not eat of those that chew their food again or have a divided foot: the camel, the rabbit and the rock badger. For though they eat their food again, they do not have a divided foot. They are unclean to you.
8 a nd the sow, for it is dividing the hoof, and not up the cud, unclean it to you; of their flesh ye do not eat, and against their carcase ye do not come.
And do not eat the pig, because it has a divided foot but does not chew its food again. It is unclean for you. Do not eat any of their flesh or touch their dead bodies.
9 ` This ye do eat of all that in the waters; all that hath fins and scales ye do eat;
“Of all that are in the water, you may eat anything that has fins and scales.
10 a nd anything which hath not fins and scales ye do not eat; unclean it to you.
But do not eat anything that does not have fins and scales. It is unclean for you.
11 ` Any clean bird ye do eat;
“You may eat any clean bird.
12 a nd these they of which ye do not eat: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the ospray,
But these are the ones you may not eat: the eagle, the vulture, the buzzard,
13 a nd the glede, and the kite, and the vulture after its kind,
the red kite, the falcon, every kind of kite,
14 a nd every raven after its kind;
every kind of raven,
15 a nd the owl, and the night-hawk, and the cuckoo, and the hawk after its kind;
the ostrich, the owl, the sea gull, every kind of hawk,
16 t he owl, and the owl, and the swan,
the little owl, the great owl, the white owl,
17 a nd the pelican, and the gier-eagle, and the cormorant,
the pelican, the vulture that eats dead flesh, the cormorant,
18 a nd the stork, and the heron after its kind, and the lapwing, and the bat;
the stork, every kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.
19 a nd every teeming thing which is flying, unclean it to you; they are not eaten;
And all flying bugs are unclean for you. Do not eat them.
20 a ny clean fowl ye do eat.
But you may eat any clean bird.
21 ` Ye do not eat of any carcase; to the sojourner who within thy gates thou dost give it, and he hath eaten it; or sell to a stranger; for a holy people thou to Jehovah thy God; thou dost not boil a kid in its mother's milk.
“Do not eat anything that dies of itself. You may give it to the stranger in your town, so he may eat it. Or you may sell it to a person from another land. For you are a holy nation to the Lord your God. “Do not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk. The Law of the Tenth Part
22 ` Thou dost certainly tithe all the increase of thy seed which the field is bringing forth year by year;
“Be sure to give a tenth part to the Lord of all you plant that comes from your field every year.
23 a nd thou hast eaten before Jehovah thy God, in the place where He doth choose to cause His name to tabernacle, the tithe of thy corn, of thy new wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herd, and of thy flock, so that thou dost learn to fear Jehovah thy God all the days.
Before the Lord your God, at the place He chooses to put His name, you may eat the tenth part of your grain, your new wine, your oil, and the first-born of your cattle and your flock. Then you may learn to fear the Lord your God always.
24 ` And when the way is too much for thee, that thou art not able to carry it -- when the place is too far off from thee which Jehovah thy God doth choose to put His name there, when Jehovah thy God doth bless thee; --
If the place where the Lord your God chooses to put His name is too far away for you to bring the tenth part of all the good things you have received,
25 t hen thou hast given in money, and hast bound up the money in thy hand, and gone unto the place on which Jehovah thy God doth fix;
you should trade it for money. Then tie the money in your hand and go to the place which the Lord your God chooses.
26 a nd thou hast given the money for any thing which thy soul desireth, for oxen, and for sheep, and for wine, and for strong drink, and for any thing which thy soul asketh, and thou hast eaten there before Jehovah thy God, and thou hast rejoiced, thou and thy house.
You may spend the money for whatever your heart may desire, for bulls, sheep, wine, strong drink, or whatever you desire. And there you and those of your house may eat before the Lord and be full of joy.
27 A s to the Levite who within thy gates, thou dost not forsake him, for he hath no portion and inheritance with thee.
Do not stop caring for the Levite who is in your town for he has no share of what is given to you.
28 ` At the end of three years thou dost bring out all the tithe of thine increase in that year, and hast placed within thy gates;
“At the end of every third year you should bring the tenth part of that year’s grain into your towns.
29 a nd come in hath the Levite (for he hath no part and inheritance with thee), and the sojourner, and the fatherless, and the widow, who within thy gates, and they have eaten, and been satisfied, so that Jehovah thy God doth bless thee in all the work of thy hand which thou dost.
And the Levite who has no share of what is given to you, and the stranger, and the child without parents, and the woman whose husband has died, who are in your towns, may come and eat and be filled. Then the Lord your God will bring good to you in all the work done by your hands.
