Judges 2 ~ Judges 2

1 A nd a messenger of Jehovah goeth up from Gilgal unto Bochim,

The angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, “I brought you out of Egypt and led you into the land I promised your fathers. I said, ‘I will never break My agreement with you.

2 a nd saith, `I cause you to come up out of Egypt, and bring you in unto the land which I have sworn to your fathers, and say, I do not break My covenant with you to the age; and ye -- ye make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land -- their altars ye break down; and ye have not hearkened to My voice -- what this ye have done?

Do not make any agreement with the people of this land. Tear down their altars.’ But you have not obeyed Me. What is this you have done?

3 A nd I also have said, I do not cast them out from your presence, and they have been to you for adversaries, and their gods are to you for a snare.'

So now I say, ‘I will not drive them away from you. They will be like thorns in your sides. Their gods will be a trap to you.’”

4 A nd it cometh to pass, when the messenger of Jehovah speaketh these words unto all the sons of Israel, that the people lift up their voice and weep,

When the angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the people of Israel, the people cried in a loud voice.

5 a nd they call the name of that place Bochim, and sacrifice there to Jehovah.

So they called that place Bochim. And there they gave gifts in worship to the Lord. The Death of Joshua

6 A nd Joshua sendeth the people away, and the sons of Israel go, each to his inheritance, to possess the land;

When Joshua sent the people of Israel away, each one went home to his own land.

7 a nd the people serve Jehovah all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who prolonged days after Joshua, who saw all the great work of Jehovah which He did to Israel.

The people served the Lord all the days of Joshua and all the days of the leaders who lived longer than Joshua and who had seen all the great works the Lord had done for Israel.

8 A nd Joshua son of Nun, servant of Jehovah, dieth, a son of a hundred and ten years,

Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died when he was 110 years old.

9 a nd they bury him in the border of his inheritance, in Timnath-Heres, in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of mount Gaash;

They buried him within his land in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

10 a nd also all that generation have been gathered unto their fathers, and another generation riseth after them who have not known Jehovah, and even the work which He hath done to Israel.

All the people of that day died. The children who came after them did not know the Lord. They did not know about the things He had done for Israel. Israel Is No Longer Faithful to the Lord

11 A nd the sons of Israel do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, and serve the Baalim,

Then the people of Israel sinned in the eyes of the Lord. They served the Baals, the gods of the Canaanites.

12 a nd forsake Jehovah, God of their fathers, who bringeth them out from the land of Egypt, and go after other gods (of the gods of the peoples who round about them), and bow themselves to them, and provoke Jehovah,

They turned away from the Lord, the God of their fathers, Who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. They followed other gods of the nations around them, and worshiped them. So they made the Lord angry.

13 y ea, they forsake Jehovah, and do service to Baal and to Ashtaroth.

They turned away from the Lord and served Baal and the Ashtaroth.

14 A nd the anger of Jehovah burneth against Israel, and He giveth them into the hand of spoilers, and they spoil them, and He selleth them into the hand of their enemies round about, and they have not been able any more to stand before their enemies;

The Lord was angry with Israel. He gave them into the hands of angry men who robbed them. He sold them into the hands of those around them who hated them. The people of Israel could no longer stand in front of those who hated them.

15 i n every where they have gone out, the hand of Jehovah hath been against them for evil, as Jehovah hath spoken, and as Jehovah hath sworn to them, and they are distressed -- greatly.

The Lord punished them everywhere they went. The Lord did what He had told them and promised them He would do. The people were very troubled.

16 A nd Jehovah raiseth up judges, and they save them from the hand of their spoilers;

Then the Lord gave them special men to judge between what was right or wrong. These men saved them from those who robbed them.

17 a nd also unto their judges they have not hearkened, but have gone a-whoring after other gods, and bow themselves to them; they have turned aside haste out of the way which their fathers walked to obey the commands of Jehovah -- they have not done so.

But the people did not listen to those chosen to judge. The people were not faithful to the Lord and they worshiped other gods. They were quick to turn aside from the way their fathers had walked in obeying the Laws of the Lord. They did not do as their fathers had done.

18 A nd when Jehovah raised up to them judges -- then was Jehovah with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for it repenteth Jehovah, because of their groaning from the presence of their oppressors, and of those thrusting them away.

When the Lord gave them special men to judge them, the Lord was with the judge. And He saved them from those who hated them. For the Lord showed them pity because of their pain when others made it hard for them and hurt them.

19 A nd it hath come to pass, at the death of the judge -- they turn back and have done corruptly above their fathers, to go after other gods, to serve them, and to bow themselves to them; they have not fallen from their doings, and from their stiff way.

But when the judge died, they would turn again and act worse than their fathers. They would follow other gods and serve them and worship them. They would not give up their sinful acts or their strong wills.

20 A nd the anger of Jehovah doth burn against Israel, and He saith, `Because that this nation have transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened to My voice --

So the anger of the Lord was against Israel. He said, “This nation has sinned against My agreement I made with their fathers. They have not listened to My voice.

21 I also continue not to dispossess any from before them of the nations which Joshua hath left when he dieth,

I will stop driving away from them any of the nations Joshua left when he died.

22 i n order to try Israel by them, whether they are keeping the way of Jehovah, to go in it, as their fathers kept or not.'

I will use them to test Israel. I will see if Israel will keep the way of the Lord to walk in it like their fathers did, or not.”

23 A nd Jehovah leaveth these nations, so as not to dispossess them hastily, and did not give them into the hand of Joshua.

So the Lord let those nations stay. He was not quick to drive them out. And He did not give them into the power of Joshua.
