1 ` These things I have spoken to you, that ye may not be stumbled,
“I have told you these things so you will not be ashamed of Me and leave Me.
2 o ut of the synagogues they will put you; but an hour doth come, that every one who hath killed you, may think to offer service unto God;
They will put you out of the places of worship. The time will come when anyone who kills you will think he is helping God.
3 a nd these things they will do to you, because they did not know the Father, nor me.
They will do these things to you because they do not know the Father or Me.
4 ` But these things I have spoken to you, that when the hour may come, ye may remember them, that I said to you, and these things to you from the beginning I did not say, because I was with you;
“When these things happen, you will remember I told you they would happen. That is why I am telling you about these things now. I did not tell you these things before, because I was with you.
5 a nd now I go away to Him who sent me, and none of you doth ask me, Whither dost thou go?
But now I am going to Him Who sent Me. Yet none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ The Three Kinds of Work of the Holy Spirit
6 b ut because these things I have said to you, the sorrow hath filled your heart.
“Your hearts are full of sorrow because I am telling you these things.
7 ` But I tell you the truth; it is better for you that I go away, for if I may not go away, the Comforter will not come unto you, and if I go on, I will send Him unto you;
I tell you the truth. It is better for you that I go away. If I do not go, the Helper will not come to you. If I go, I will send Him to you.
8 a nd having come, He will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment;
When the Helper comes, He will show the world the truth about sin. He will show the world about being right with God. And He will show the world what it is to be guilty.
9 c oncerning sin indeed, because they do not believe in me;
He will show the world about sin, because they do not put their trust in Me.
10 a nd concerning righteousness, because unto my Father I go away, and no more do ye behold me;
He will show the world about being right with God, because I go to My Father and you will see Me no more.
11 a nd concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world hath been judged.
He will show the world what it is to be guilty because the leader of this world (Satan) is guilty. The Holy Spirit Will Give Honor to the Son
12 ` I have yet many things to say to you, but ye are not able to bear now;
“I still have many things to say to you. You are not strong enough to understand them now.
13 a nd when He may come -- the Spirit of truth -- He will guide you to all the truth, for He will not speak from Himself, but as many things as He will hear He will speak, and the coming things He will tell you;
The Holy Spirit is coming. He will lead you into all truth. He will not speak His Own words. He will speak what He hears. He will tell you of things to come.
14 H e will glorify me, because of mine He will take, and will tell to you.
He will honor Me. He will receive what is Mine and will tell it to you.
15 ` All things, as many as the Father hath, are mine; because of this I said, That of mine He will take, and will tell to you;
Everything the Father has is Mine. That is why I said to you, ‘He will receive what is Mine and will tell it to you.’ Jesus Tells of His Death
16 a little while, and ye do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me, because I go away unto the Father.'
“In a little while you will not see Me. Then in a little while you will see Me again.”
17 T herefore said of his disciples one to another, `What is this that he saith to us, A little while, and ye do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me, and, Because I go away unto the Father?'
Some of His followers said to each other, “What is He trying to tell us when He says, ‘In a little while you will not see Me, and in a little while you will see Me again,’ and ‘Because I go to My Father’ ?”
18 t hey said then, `What is this he saith -- the little while? we have not known what he saith.'
So they said, “What is He trying to tell us by saying, ‘A little while’ ? We do not know what He is talking about.”
19 J esus, therefore, knew that they were wishing to ask him, and he said to them, `Concerning this do ye seek one with another, because I said, A little while, and you do not behold me, and again a little while, and ye shall see me?
Jesus knew they wanted to ask Him something. He said to them, “Are you asking each other why I said, ‘In a little while you will not see Me, and in a little while you will see Me again’?
20 v erily, verily, I say to you, that ye shall weep and lament, and the world will rejoice; and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow joy will become.
For sure, I tell you, you will cry and have sorrow, but the world will have joy. You will have sorrow, but your sorrow will turn into joy.
21 ` The woman, when she may bear, hath sorrow, because her hour did come, and when she may bear the child, no more doth she remember the anguish, because of the joy that a man was born to the world.
When a woman gives birth to a child, she has sorrow because her time has come. After the child is born, she forgets her pain. She is full of joy because a child has been born into the world.
22 ` And ye, therefore, now, indeed, have sorrow; and again I will see you, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no one doth take from you,
You are sad now. I will see you again and then your hearts will be full of joy. No one can take your joy from you. Asking and Receiving
23 a nd in that day ye will question me nothing; verily, verily, I say to you, as many things as ye may ask of the Father in my name, He will give you;
“When the time comes that you see Me again, you will ask Me no question. For sure, I tell you, My Father will give you whatever you ask in My name.
24 t ill now ye did ask nothing in my name; ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you will receive. Then your joy will be full.
25 ` These things in similitudes I have spoken to you, but there cometh an hour when no more in similitudes will I speak to you, but freely of the Father, will tell you.
“I have told you these things in picture-stories. The time is coming when I will not use picture-stories. I will talk about My Father in plain words.
26 ` In that day, in my name ye will make request, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father for you,
In that day you will ask in My name. I will not ask the Father for you
27 f or the Father himself doth love you, because me ye have loved, and ye have believed that I from God came forth;
because the Father loves you. He loves you because you love Me and believe that I came from the Father. Jesus Tells of His Going
28 I came forth from the Father, and have come to the world; again I leave the world, and go on unto the Father.'
“I came from the Father and have come into the world. I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”
29 H is disciples say to him, `Lo, now freely thou dost speak, and no similitude speakest thou;
His followers said to Him, “Now You are talking in plain words. You are not using picture-stories.
30 n ow we have known that thou hast known all things, and hast no need that any one do question thee; in this we believe that from God thou didst come forth.'
Now we are sure You know everything. You do not need anyone to tell You anything. Because of this we believe that You came from God.”
31 J esus answered them, `Now do ye believe? lo, there doth come an hour,
Jesus said to them, “Do you believe now?
32 a nd now it hath come, that ye may be scattered, each to his own things, and me ye may leave alone, and I am not alone, because the Father is with me;
The time is coming, yes, it is already here when you will be going your own way. Everyone will go to his own house and leave Me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with Me.
33 t hese things I have spoken to you, that in me ye may have peace, in the world ye shall have tribulation, but take courage -- I have overcome the world.'
I have told you these things so you may have peace in Me. In the world you will have much trouble. But take hope! I have power over the world!”
