1 A nd Abraham journeyeth from thence toward the land of the south, and dwelleth between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourneth in Gerar;
Abraham traveled from there to the land of the Negev, and made his home between Kadesh and Shur. Then he lived for a time in Gerar.
2 a nd Abraham saith concerning Sarah his wife, `She is my sister;' and Abimelech king of Gerar sendeth and taketh Sarah.
Abraham said about his wife Sarah, “She is my sister.” So Abimelech king of Gerar sent for Sarah and took her for his wife.
3 A nd God cometh in unto Abimelech in a dream of the night, and saith to him, `Lo, thou a dead man, because of the woman whom thou hast taken -- and she married to a husband.'
But God came to Abimelech in a dream of the night, and said, “See, you are a dead man because of the woman you have taken. For she is already married.”
4 A nd Abimelech hath not drawn near unto her, and he saith, `Lord, also a righteous nation dost thou slay?
But Abimelech had not come near her. He said, “Lord, will You destroy a nation who is without blame?
5 h ath not he himself said to me, She my sister! and she, even she herself, said, He my brother; in the integrity of my heart, and in the innocency of my hands, I have done this.'
Did the man not tell me, ‘She is my sister’? And she, even she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ I have done this with a heart of honor and with hands that are not guilty.”
6 A nd God saith unto him in the dream, `Yea, I -- I have known that in the integrity of thy heart thou hast done this, and I withhold thee, even I, from sinning against Me, therefore I have not suffered thee to come against her;
Then God said to him in the dream, “Yes, I know that you have done this with a heart of honor. And I kept you from sinning against Me. I did not let you touch her.
7 a nd now send back the man's wife, for he inspired, and he doth pray for thee, and live thou; and if thou do not send back, know that dying thou dost die, thou, and all that thou hast.'
So now return the man’s wife. For he is one who speaks for Me. Then he will pray for you, and you will live. But if you do not return her, know that you and all who are yours will die for sure.”
8 A nd Abimelech riseth early in the morning, and calleth for all his servants, and speaketh all these words in their ears; and the men fear exceedingly;
So Abimelech got up early in the morning. He called all his servants and told them all these things. And the men were very much afraid.
9 a nd Abimelech calleth for Abraham, and saith to him, `What hast thou done to us? and what have I sinned against thee, that thou hast brought upon me, and upon my kingdom, a great sin? works which are not done thou hast done with me.'
Then Abimelech called Abraham and said, “What have you done to us? What wrong have I done to you, that made you bring a great sin upon me and my nation? You have done to me what should not have been done.”
10 A bimelech also saith unto Abraham, `What hast thou seen that thou hast done this thing?'
Abimelech said to Abraham, “What made you do such a thing?”
11 A nd Abraham saith, `Because I said, `Surely the fear of God is not in this place, and they have slain me for the sake of my wife;
Abraham said, “I did it because I thought there was no fear of God in this place. I thought they would kill me because of my wife.
12 a nd also, truly she is my sister, daughter of my father, only not daughter of my mother, and she becometh my wife;
And it is true she is my sister. She is the daughter of my father, but not of my mother. And she became my wife.
13 a nd it cometh to pass, when God hath caused me to wander from my father's house, that I say to her, This thy kindness which thou dost with me: at every place whither we come, say of me, He my brother.'
When God made me go from my father’s house, I said to Sarah, ‘This is the kindness you must show me. Everywhere we go, say of me, “He is my brother.”’”
14 A nd Abimelech taketh sheep and oxen, and servants and handmaids, and giveth to Abraham, and sendeth back to him Sarah his wife;
Then Abimelech gave to Abraham sheep and cattle, and men and women servants. And he returned his wife Sarah to him.
15 a nd Abimelech saith, `Lo, my land before thee, where it is good in thine eyes, dwell;'
Abimelech said, “See, my land is in front of you. Make your home any place you want.”
16 a nd to Sarah he hath said, `Lo, I have given a thousand silverlings to thy brother; lo, it is to thee a covering of eyes, to all who are with thee;' and by all this she is reasoned with.
He said to Sarah, “See, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver. It is to pay you for all that has happened. Your honor is made right in the eyes of all men.”
17 A nd Abraham prayeth unto God, and God healeth Abimelech and his wife, and his handmaids, and they bear:
So Abraham prayed to God. And God healed Abimelech, his wife and the women who served him, so that they gave birth to children.
18 f or Jehovah restraining had restrained every womb of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.
For the Lord had stopped all births in the house of Abimelech because of Abraham’s wife Sarah.
