1 A nd Abraham journeyeth from thence toward the land of the south, and dwelleth between Kadesh and Shur, and sojourneth in Gerar;
And Abraham journeyed from there to the South, and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur, and stayed in Gerar.
2 a nd Abraham saith concerning Sarah his wife, `She is my sister;' and Abimelech king of Gerar sendeth and taketh Sarah.
Now Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.
3 A nd God cometh in unto Abimelech in a dream of the night, and saith to him, `Lo, thou a dead man, because of the woman whom thou hast taken -- and she married to a husband.'
But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, “Indeed you are a dead man because of the woman whom you have taken, for she is a man’s wife.”
4 A nd Abimelech hath not drawn near unto her, and he saith, `Lord, also a righteous nation dost thou slay?
But Abimelech had not come near her; and he said, “Lord, will You slay a righteous nation also?
5 h ath not he himself said to me, She my sister! and she, even she herself, said, He my brother; in the integrity of my heart, and in the innocency of my hands, I have done this.'
Did he not say to me, ‘She is my sister’? And she, even she herself said, ‘He is my brother.’ In the integrity of my heart and innocence of my hands I have done this.”
6 A nd God saith unto him in the dream, `Yea, I -- I have known that in the integrity of thy heart thou hast done this, and I withhold thee, even I, from sinning against Me, therefore I have not suffered thee to come against her;
And God said to him in a dream, “Yes, I know that you did this in the integrity of your heart. For I also withheld you from sinning against Me; therefore I did not let you touch her.
7 a nd now send back the man's wife, for he inspired, and he doth pray for thee, and live thou; and if thou do not send back, know that dying thou dost die, thou, and all that thou hast.'
Now therefore, restore the man’s wife; for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you shall live. But if you do not restore her, know that you shall surely die, you and all who are yours.”
8 A nd Abimelech riseth early in the morning, and calleth for all his servants, and speaketh all these words in their ears; and the men fear exceedingly;
So Abimelech rose early in the morning, called all his servants, and told all these things in their hearing; and the men were very much afraid.
9 a nd Abimelech calleth for Abraham, and saith to him, `What hast thou done to us? and what have I sinned against thee, that thou hast brought upon me, and upon my kingdom, a great sin? works which are not done thou hast done with me.'
And Abimelech called Abraham and said to him, “What have you done to us? How have I offended you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? You have done deeds to me that ought not to be done.”
10 A bimelech also saith unto Abraham, `What hast thou seen that thou hast done this thing?'
Then Abimelech said to Abraham, “What did you have in view, that you have done this thing?”
11 A nd Abraham saith, `Because I said, `Surely the fear of God is not in this place, and they have slain me for the sake of my wife;
And Abraham said, “Because I thought, surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will kill me on account of my wife.
12 a nd also, truly she is my sister, daughter of my father, only not daughter of my mother, and she becometh my wife;
But indeed she is truly my sister. She is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.
13 a nd it cometh to pass, when God hath caused me to wander from my father's house, that I say to her, This thy kindness which thou dost with me: at every place whither we come, say of me, He my brother.'
And it came to pass, when God caused me to wander from my father’s house, that I said to her, ‘This is your kindness that you should do for me: in every place, wherever we go, say of me, “He is my brother.”’”
14 A nd Abimelech taketh sheep and oxen, and servants and handmaids, and giveth to Abraham, and sendeth back to him Sarah his wife;
Then Abimelech took sheep, oxen, and male and female servants, and gave them to Abraham; and he restored Sarah his wife to him.
15 a nd Abimelech saith, `Lo, my land before thee, where it is good in thine eyes, dwell;'
And Abimelech said, “See, my land is before you; dwell where it pleases you.”
16 a nd to Sarah he hath said, `Lo, I have given a thousand silverlings to thy brother; lo, it is to thee a covering of eyes, to all who are with thee;' and by all this she is reasoned with.
Then to Sarah he said, “Behold, I have given your brother a thousand pieces of silver; indeed this vindicates you before all who are with you and before everybody.” Thus she was rebuked.
17 A nd Abraham prayeth unto God, and God healeth Abimelech and his wife, and his handmaids, and they bear:
So Abraham prayed to God; and God healed Abimelech, his wife, and his female servants. Then they bore children;
18 f or Jehovah restraining had restrained every womb of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.
for the Lord had closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech because of Sarah, Abraham’s wife.
