1 P roverbs of Solomon. A wise son causeth a father to rejoice, And a foolish son an affliction to his mother.

The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son makes a glad father, But a foolish son is the grief of his mother.

2 T reasures of wickedness profit not, And righteousness delivereth from death.

Treasures of wickedness profit nothing, But righteousness delivers from death.

3 J ehovah causeth not the soul of the righteous to hunger, And the desire of the wicked He thrusteth away.

The Lord will not allow the righteous soul to famish, But He casts away the desire of the wicked.

4 P oor he who is working -- a slothful hand, And the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

He who has a slack hand becomes poor, But the hand of the diligent makes rich.

5 W hoso is gathering in summer a wise son, Whoso is sleeping in harvest a son causing shame.

He who gathers in summer is a wise son; He who sleeps in harvest is a son who causes shame.

6 B lessings for the head of the righteous, And the mouth of the wicked cover doth violence.

Blessings are on the head of the righteous, But violence covers the mouth of the wicked.

7 T he remembrance of the righteous for a blessing, And the name of the wicked doth rot.

The memory of the righteous is blessed, But the name of the wicked will rot.

8 T he wise in heart accepteth commands, And a talkative fool kicketh.

The wise in heart will receive commands, But a prating fool will fall.

9 W hoso is walking in integrity walketh confidently, And whoso is perverting his ways is known.

He who walks with integrity walks securely, But he who perverts his ways will become known.

10 W hoso is winking the eye giveth grief, And a talkative fool kicketh.

He who winks with the eye causes trouble, But a prating fool will fall.

11 A fountain of life the mouth of the righteous, And the mouth of the wicked cover doth violence.

The mouth of the righteous is a well of life, But violence covers the mouth of the wicked.

12 H atred awaketh contentions, And over all transgressions love covereth.

Hatred stirs up strife, But love covers all sins.

13 I n the lips of the intelligent is wisdom found, And a rod for the back of him who is lacking understanding.

Wisdom is found on the lips of him who has understanding, But a rod is for the back of him who is devoid of understanding.

14 T he wise lay up knowledge, and the mouth of a fool near ruin.

Wise people store up knowledge, But the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.

15 T he wealth of the rich his strong city, The ruin of the poor their poverty.

The rich man’s wealth is his strong city; The destruction of the poor is their poverty.

16 T he wage of the righteous for life, The increase of the wicked for sin.

The labor of the righteous leads to life, The wages of the wicked to sin.

17 A traveller to life he who is keeping instruction, And whoso is forsaking rebuke is erring.

He who keeps instruction is in the way of life, But he who refuses correction goes astray.

18 W hoso is covering hatred with lying lips, And whoso is bringing out an evil report is a fool.

Whoever hides hatred has lying lips, And whoever spreads slander is a fool.

19 I n the abundance of words transgression ceaseth not, And whoso is restraining his lips wise.

In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise.

20 T he tongue of the righteous chosen silver, The heart of the wicked -- as a little thing.

The tongue of the righteous is choice silver; The heart of the wicked is worth little.

21 T he lips of the righteous delight many, And fools for lack of heart die.

The lips of the righteous feed many, But fools die for lack of wisdom.

22 T he blessing of Jehovah -- it maketh rich, And He addeth no grief with it.

The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, And He adds no sorrow with it.

23 T o execute inventions as play to a fool, And wisdom to a man of understanding.

To do evil is like sport to a fool, But a man of understanding has wisdom.

24 T he feared thing of the wicked it meeteth him, And the desire of the righteous is given.

The fear of the wicked will come upon him, And the desire of the righteous will be granted.

25 A s the passing by of a hurricane, So the wicked is not, And the righteous is a foundation age-during.

When the whirlwind passes by, the wicked is no more, But the righteous has an everlasting foundation.

26 A s vinegar to the teeth, And as smoke to the eyes, So the slothful to those sending him.

As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes, So is the lazy man to those who send him.

27 T he fear of Jehovah addeth days, And the years of the wicked are shortened.

The fear of the Lord prolongs days, But the years of the wicked will be shortened.

28 T he hope of the righteous joyful, And the expectation of the wicked perisheth.

The hope of the righteous will be gladness, But the expectation of the wicked will perish.

29 T he way of Jehovah strength to the perfect, And ruin to workers of iniquity.

The way of the Lord is strength for the upright, But destruction will come to the workers of iniquity.

30 T he righteous to the age is not moved, And the wicked inhabit not the earth.

The righteous will never be removed, But the wicked will not inhabit the earth.

31 T he mouth of the righteous uttereth wisdom, And the tongue of frowardness is cut out.

The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, But the perverse tongue will be cut out.

32 T he lips of the righteous know a pleasing thing, And the mouth of the wicked perverseness!

The lips of the righteous know what is acceptable, But the mouth of the wicked what is perverse.
