1 T hese things having said, Jesus went forth with his disciples beyond the brook of Kedron, where was a garden, into which he entered, himself and his disciples,

When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered.

2 a nd Judas also, who delivered him up, had known the place, because many times did Jesus assemble there with his disciples.

And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples.

3 J udas, therefore, having taken the band and officers out of the chief priests and Pharisees, doth come thither with torches and lamps, and weapons;

Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.

4 J esus, therefore, knowing all things that are coming upon him, having gone forth, said to them, `Whom do ye seek?'

Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?”

5 t hey answered him, `Jesus the Nazarene;' Jesus saith to them, `I am;' -- and Judas who delivered him up was standing with them; --

They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am He. ” And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them.

6 w hen, therefore, he said to them -- `I am,' they went away backward, and fell to the ground.

Now when He said to them, “I am He, ” they drew back and fell to the ground.

7 A gain, therefore, he questioned them, `Whom do ye seek?' and they said, `Jesus the Nazarene;'

Then He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”

8 J esus answered, `I said to you that I am; if, then, me ye seek, suffer these to go away;'

Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,”

9 t hat the word might be fulfilled that he said -- `Those whom Thou hast given to me, I did not lose of them even one.'

that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, “Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.”

10 S imon Peter, therefore, having a sword, drew it, and struck the chief priest's servant, and cut off his right ear -- and the name of the servant was Malchus --

Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.

11 J esus, therefore, said to Peter, `Put the sword into the sheath; the cup that the Father hath given to me, may I not drink it?'

So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?” Before the High Priest

12 T he band, therefore, and the captain, and the officers of the Jews, took hold on Jesus, and bound him,

Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him.

13 a nd they led him away to Annas first, for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was chief priest of that year,

And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year.

14 a nd Caiaphas was he who gave counsel to the Jews, that it is good for one man to perish for the people.

Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. Peter Denies Jesus

15 A nd following Jesus was Simon Peter, and the other disciple, and that disciple was known to the chief priest, and he entered with Jesus to the hall of the chief priest,

And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.

16 a nd Peter was standing at the door without, therefore went forth the other disciple who was known to the chief priest, and he spake to the female keeping the door, and he brought in Peter.

But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in.

17 T hen said the maid keeping the door to Peter, `Art thou also of the disciples of this man?' he saith, `I am not;'

Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, “You are not also one of this Man’s disciples, are you?” He said, “I am not.”

18 a nd the servants and the officers were standing, having made a fire of coals, because it was cold, and they were warming themselves, and Peter was standing with them, and warming himself.

Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself. Jesus Questioned by the High Priest

19 T he chief priests, therefore, questioned Jesus concerning his disciples, and concerning his teaching;

The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.

20 J esus answered him, `I spake freely to the world, I did always teach in a synagogue, and in the temple, where the Jews do always come together; and in secret I spake nothing;

Jesus answered him, “I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing.

21 w hy me dost thou question? question those having heard what I spake to them; lo, these have known what I said.'

Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said.”

22 A nd he having said these things, one of the officers standing by did give Jesus a slap, saying, `Thus dost thou answer the chief priest?'

And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, “Do You answer the high priest like that?”

23 J esus answered him, `If I spake ill, testify concerning the ill; and if well, why me dost thou smite?'

Jesus answered him, “If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?”

24 A nnas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the chief priest.

Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest. Peter Denies Twice More

25 A nd Simon Peter was standing and warming himself, they said then to him, `Art thou also of his disciples?' he denied, and said, `I am not.'

Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. Therefore they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not!”

26 O ne of the servants of the chief priest, being kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, saith, `Did not I see thee in the garden with him?'

One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, “Did I not see you in the garden with Him?”

27 a gain, therefore, Peter denied, and immediately a cock crew.

Peter then denied again; and immediately a rooster crowed. In Pilate’s Court

28 T hey led, therefore, Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium, and it was early, and they themselves did not enter into the praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the passover;

Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. But they themselves did not go into the Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover.

29 P ilate, therefore, went forth unto them, and said, `What accusation do ye bring against this man?'

Pilate then went out to them and said, “What accusation do you bring against this Man?”

30 t hey answered and said to him, `If he were not an evil doer, we had not delivered him to thee.'

They answered and said to him, “If He were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you.”

31 P ilate, therefore, said to them, `Take ye him -- ye -- and according to your law judge him;' the Jews, therefore, said to him, `It is not lawful to us to put any one to death;'

Then Pilate said to them, “You take Him and judge Him according to your law.” Therefore the Jews said to him, “It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,”

32 t hat the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which he said, signifying by what death he was about to die.

that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, signifying by what death He would die.

33 P ilate, therefore, entered into the praetorium again, and called Jesus, and said to him, `Thou art the King of the Jews?'

Then Pilate entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”

34 J esus answered him, `From thyself dost thou say this? or did others say it to thee about me?'

Jesus answered him, “Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?”

35 P ilate answered, `Am I a Jew? thy nation, and the chief priests did deliver thee up to me; what didst thou?'

Pilate answered, “Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?”

36 J esus answered, `My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my officers had struggled that I might not be delivered up to Jews; but now my kingdom is not from hence.'

Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here.”

37 P ilate, therefore, said to him, `Art thou then a king?' Jesus answered, `Thou dost say; because a king I am, I for this have been born, and for this I have come to the world, that I may testify to the truth; every one who is of the truth, doth hear my voice.'

Pilate therefore said to Him, “Are You a king then?” Jesus answered, “You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.”

38 P ilate saith to him, `What is truth?' and this having said, again he went forth unto the Jews, and saith to them, `I do find no fault in him;

Pilate said to Him, “What is truth?” And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, “I find no fault in Him at all. Taking the Place of Barabbas

39 a nd ye have a custom that I shall release to you one in the passover; will ye, therefore, I shall release to you the king of the Jews?'

“But you have a custom that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Do you therefore want me to release to you the King of the Jews?”

40 t herefore they all cried out again, saying, `Not this one -- but Barabbas;' and Barabbas was a robber.

Then they all cried again, saying, “Not this Man, but Barabbas!” Now Barabbas was a robber.
