1 A nd a messenger of Jehovah goeth up from Gilgal unto Bochim,

L’angelo del Signore salì da Ghilgal a Bochim e disse: «Io vi ho fatto salire dall’Egitto e vi ho condotti nel paese che avevo giurato ai vostri padri di darvi. Avevo anche detto: “Io non romperò mai il mio patto con voi;

2 a nd saith, `I cause you to come up out of Egypt, and bring you in unto the land which I have sworn to your fathers, and say, I do not break My covenant with you to the age; and ye -- ye make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land -- their altars ye break down; and ye have not hearkened to My voice -- what this ye have done?

e voi, dal canto vostro, non farete alleanza con gli abitanti di questo paese e demolirete i loro altari”. Ma voi non avete ubbidito alla mia voce. Perché avete fatto questo?

3 A nd I also have said, I do not cast them out from your presence, and they have been to you for adversaries, and their gods are to you for a snare.'

Perciò anch’io ho detto: “Io non li scaccerò davanti a voi; ma essi saranno tanti nemici contro di voi e i loro dèi saranno per voi un’insidia”».

4 A nd it cometh to pass, when the messenger of Jehovah speaketh these words unto all the sons of Israel, that the people lift up their voice and weep,

Appena l’angelo del Signore ebbe detto queste parole a tutti i figli d’Israele, il popolo si mise a piangere ad alta voce.

5 a nd they call the name of that place Bochim, and sacrifice there to Jehovah.

Posero a quel luogo il nome di Bochim e offrirono là dei sacrifici al Signore.

6 A nd Joshua sendeth the people away, and the sons of Israel go, each to his inheritance, to possess the land;

Giosuè rimandò il popolo, e i figli d’Israele andarono ciascuno nel suo territorio a prendere possesso del paese.

7 a nd the people serve Jehovah all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who prolonged days after Joshua, who saw all the great work of Jehovah which He did to Israel.

Il popolo servì il Signore durante tutta la vita di Giosuè e durante tutta la vita degli anziani che sopravvissero a Giosuè, che avevano visto tutte le grandi opere che il Signore aveva fatte in favore d’Israele.

8 A nd Joshua son of Nun, servant of Jehovah, dieth, a son of a hundred and ten years,

Poi Giosuè, figlio di Nun e servo del Signore, morì all’età di centodieci anni

9 a nd they bury him in the border of his inheritance, in Timnath-Heres, in the hill-country of Ephraim, on the north of mount Gaash;

e fu sepolto nel territorio che gli era toccato a Timnat-Cheres, nella regione montuosa di Efraim, a nord della montagna di Gaas. Corruzione e disfatta della nuova generazione; i giudici

10 a nd also all that generation have been gathered unto their fathers, and another generation riseth after them who have not known Jehovah, and even the work which He hath done to Israel.

Anche tutta quella generazione fu riunita ai suoi padri; poi, dopo quella, vi fu un’altra generazione che non conosceva il Signore, né le opere che egli aveva compiute in favore d’Israele.

11 A nd the sons of Israel do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, and serve the Baalim,

I figli d’Israele fecero ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore e servirono gli idoli di Baal.

12 a nd forsake Jehovah, God of their fathers, who bringeth them out from the land of Egypt, and go after other gods (of the gods of the peoples who round about them), and bow themselves to them, and provoke Jehovah,

Abbandonarono il Signore, il Dio dei loro padri, che li aveva fatti uscire dal paese d’Egitto, e andarono dietro ad altri dèi, fra gli dèi dei popoli che li attorniavano; si prostrarono davanti a essi e provocarono l’ira del Signore.

13 y ea, they forsake Jehovah, and do service to Baal and to Ashtaroth.

Abbandonarono il Signore e servirono Baal e gli idoli di Astarte.

14 A nd the anger of Jehovah burneth against Israel, and He giveth them into the hand of spoilers, and they spoil them, and He selleth them into the hand of their enemies round about, and they have not been able any more to stand before their enemies;

L’ira del Signore si accese contro Israele ed egli li diede in mano ai predoni, che li spogliarono; li vendette ai nemici che stavano loro intorno, in modo che non poterono più resistere di fronte ai loro nemici.

15 i n every where they have gone out, the hand of Jehovah hath been against them for evil, as Jehovah hath spoken, and as Jehovah hath sworn to them, and they are distressed -- greatly.

Dovunque andavano, la mano del Signore era contro di loro a loro danno, come il Signore aveva detto, come il Signore aveva loro giurato; e la loro tribolazione fu molto grande.

16 A nd Jehovah raiseth up judges, and they save them from the hand of their spoilers;

Il Signore allora fece sorgere dei giudici, che li liberavano dalle mani di quelli che li spogliavano.

17 a nd also unto their judges they have not hearkened, but have gone a-whoring after other gods, and bow themselves to them; they have turned aside haste out of the way which their fathers walked to obey the commands of Jehovah -- they have not done so.

Ma neppure ai loro giudici davano ascolto, anzi, si prostituivano ad altri dèi e si prostravano davanti a loro. Abbandonarono ben presto la via percorsa dai loro padri, i quali avevano ubbidito ai comandamenti del Signore; ma essi non fecero così.

18 A nd when Jehovah raised up to them judges -- then was Jehovah with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for it repenteth Jehovah, because of their groaning from the presence of their oppressors, and of those thrusting them away.

Quando il Signore suscitava loro dei giudici, il Signore era con il giudice e li liberava dalla mano dei loro nemici durante tutta la vita del giudice; poiché il Signore aveva compassione dei loro gemiti a causa di quelli che li opprimevano e angariavano.

19 A nd it hath come to pass, at the death of the judge -- they turn back and have done corruptly above their fathers, to go after other gods, to serve them, and to bow themselves to them; they have not fallen from their doings, and from their stiff way.

Ma quando il giudice moriva, tornavano a corrompersi più dei loro padri, andando dietro ad altri dèi per servirli e prostrarsi davanti a loro; non rinunciavano affatto alle loro pratiche e alla loro caparbia condotta.

20 A nd the anger of Jehovah doth burn against Israel, and He saith, `Because that this nation have transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened to My voice --

Perciò l’ira del Signore si accese contro Israele, ed egli disse: «Poiché questa nazione ha violato il patto che avevo stabilito con i loro padri ed essi non hanno ubbidito alla mia voce,

21 I also continue not to dispossess any from before them of the nations which Joshua hath left when he dieth,

anch’io non scaccerò più davanti a loro nessuna delle nazioni che Giosuè lasciò quando morì;

22 i n order to try Israel by them, whether they are keeping the way of Jehovah, to go in it, as their fathers kept or not.'

così, per mezzo di esse, metterò alla prova Israele per vedere se si atterranno alla via del Signore e cammineranno per essa come fecero i loro padri, o no».

23 A nd Jehovah leaveth these nations, so as not to dispossess them hastily, and did not give them into the hand of Joshua.

Il Signore lasciò stare quelle nazioni senz’affrettarsi a scacciarle e non le diede nelle mani di Giosuè.
