1 A nd the sons of Israel come in, -- all the company -- to the wilderness of Zin, in the first month, and the people abide in Kadesh, and Miriam dieth there, and is buried there.

Or tutta la comunità dei figli d’Israele arrivò al deserto di Sin il primo mese, e il popolo si fermò a Cades. Là morì e fu sepolta Miriam.

2 A nd there hath been no water for the company, and they are assembled against Moses, and against Aaron,

Non c’era acqua per la comunità; perciò ci fu un assembramento contro Mosè e contro Aaronne.

3 a nd the people strive with Moses, and speak, saying, `And oh that we had expired when our brethren expired before Jehovah!

Il popolo si mise a contestare Mosè, e disse: «Fossimo pur morti quando morirono i nostri fratelli davanti al Signore!

4 a nd why have ye brought in the assembly of Jehovah unto this wilderness to die there, we and our beasts?

Perché avete condotto l’assemblea del Signore in questo deserto per morire qui noi e il nostro bestiame?

5 a nd why hast thou brought us up out of Egypt to bring us in unto this evil place? no place of seed, and fig, and vine, and pomegranate; and water there is none to drink.

Perché ci avete fatti salire dall’Egitto per condurci in questo luogo detestabile? Non è un luogo dove si possa seminare; non ci sono fichi, né vigne, né melograni e non c’è acqua da bere».

6 A nd Moses and Aaron go in from the presence of the assembly unto the opening of the tent of meeting, and fall on their faces, and the honour of Jehovah is seen by them.

Allora Mosè e Aaronne si allontanarono dall’assemblea per recarsi all’ingresso della tenda di convegno; si prostrarono con la faccia a terra, e la gloria del Signore apparve loro.

7 A nd Jehovah speaketh unto Moses, saying,

Il Signore disse a Mosè:

8 ` Take the rod, and assemble the company, thou and Aaron thy brother; and ye have spoken unto the rock before their eyes, and it hath given its water, and thou hast brought out to them water from the rock, and hast watered the company, and their beasts.'

«Prendi il bastone; tu e tuo fratello Aaronne convocate la comunità e parlate a quella roccia, in loro presenza, ed essa darà la sua acqua; tu farai sgorgare per loro acqua dalla roccia e darai da bere alla comunità e al suo bestiame».

9 A nd Moses taketh the rod from before Jehovah, as He hath commanded him,

Mosè dunque prese il bastone che era davanti al Signore, come il Signore gli aveva comandato.

10 a nd Moses and Aaron assemble the assembly unto the front of the rock, and he saith to them, `Hear, I pray you, O rebels, from this rock do we bring out to you water?'

Mosè e Aaronne convocarono l’assemblea di fronte alla roccia e Mosè disse loro: «Ora ascoltate, o ribelli; faremo uscire per voi acqua da questa roccia?»

11 a nd Moses lifteth up his hand, and smiteth the rock with his rod twice; and much water cometh out, and the company drink, also their beasts.

E Mosè alzò la mano, percosse la roccia con il suo bastone due volte e ne uscì acqua in abbondanza; e la comunità e il suo bestiame bevvero.

12 A nd Jehovah saith unto Moses, and unto Aaron, `Because ye have not believed in Me to sanctify Me before the eyes of the sons of Israel, therefore ye do not bring in this assembly unto the land which I have given to them.'

Poi il Signore disse a Mosè e ad Aaronne: «Siccome non avete avuto fiducia in me per dar gloria al mio santo nome agli occhi dei figli d’Israele, voi non condurrete quest’assemblea nel paese che io le do».

13 T hese waters of Meribah, because the sons of Israel have `striven' with Jehovah, and He is sanctified upon them.

Queste sono le acque di Meriba dove i figli d’Israele contestarono il Signore, che si fece riconoscere come il Santo in mezzo a loro. Il re di Edom rifiuta il transito a Israele

14 A nd Moses sendeth messengers from Kadesh unto the king of Edom, `Thus said thy brother Israel, Thou -- thou hast known all the travail which hath found us;

Poi Mosè mandò da Cades degli ambasciatori al re di Edom per dirgli: «Così dice Israele tuo fratello: “Tu conosci tutte le tribolazioni che abbiamo avute,

15 t hat our fathers go down to Egypt, and we dwell in Egypt many days, and the Egyptians do evil to us and to our fathers;

come i nostri padri scesero in Egitto e noi in Egitto abitammo per lungo tempo, e gli Egiziani maltrattarono noi e i nostri padri.

16 a nd we cry unto Jehovah, and He heareth our voice, and sendeth a messenger, and is bringing us out of Egypt; and lo, we in Kadesh, a city the extremity of thy border.

Noi gridammo al Signore ed egli udì la nostra voce e mandò un angelo e ci fece uscire dall’Egitto; ed eccoci ora a Cades, città situata all’estremo limite del tuo territorio.

17 L et us pass over, we pray thee, through thy land; we pass not over through a field, or through a vineyard, nor do we drink waters of a well; the way of the king we go, we turn not aside -- right or left -- till that we pass over thy border.'

Ti prego, lasciaci passare per il tuo paese, noi non passeremo né per campi né per vigneti e non berremo l’acqua dei pozzi; seguiremo la strada principale senza deviare né a destra né a sinistra finché abbiamo oltrepassato i tuoi confini”».

18 A nd Edom saith unto him, `Thou dost not pass over through me, lest with sword I come out to meet thee.'

Ma Edom gli rispose: «Tu non passerai sul mio territorio; altrimenti, marcerò contro di te con la spada».

19 A nd the sons of Israel say unto him, `In the highway we go, and if of thy waters we drink -- I and my cattle -- then I have given their price; only (it is nothing) on my feet I pass over.'

I figli d’Israele dissero: «Noi saliremo per la strada maestra; e se noi e il nostro bestiame berremo dell’acqua tua, te la pagheremo; lasciaci semplicemente transitare a piedi».

20 A nd he saith, `Thou dost not pass over;' and Edom cometh out to meet him with much people, and with a strong hand;

Ma quello rispose: «Non passerai!» E Edom mosse contro Israele con molta gente e con mano potente.

21 a nd Edom refuseth to suffer Israel to pass over through his border, and Israel turneth aside from off him.

Così Edom rifiutò a Israele il transito sul suo territorio; perciò Israele si allontanò da lui.

22 A nd the sons of Israel, the whole company, journey from Kadesh, and come in unto mount Hor,

Tutta la comunità dei figli d’Israele partì da Cades e arrivò al monte Or. Morte di Aaronne

23 a nd Jehovah speaketh unto Moses and unto Aaron in mount Hor, on the border of the land of Edom, saying,

Il Signore parlò a Mosè e ad Aaronne, al monte Or, ai confini del paese di Edom, e disse:

24 ` Aaron is gathered unto his people, for he doth not go in unto the land which I have given to the sons of Israel, because that ye provoked My mouth at the waters of Meribah.

«Aaronne sta per ricongiungersi ai suoi padri e non entrerà nel paese che ho dato ai figli d’Israele, perché siete stati ribelli al mio comandamento alle acque di Meriba.

25 ` Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and cause them to go up mount Hor,

Prendi Aaronne ed Eleazar suo figlio e falli salire sul monte Or.

26 a nd strip Aaron of his garments, and thou hast clothed them Eleazar his son, and Aaron is gathered, and doth die there.'

Spoglia Aaronne dei suoi paramenti e rivestine Eleazar suo figlio; qui Aaronne morrà e si ricongiungerà ai suoi padri».

27 A nd Moses doth as Jehovah hath commanded, and they go up unto mount Hor before the eyes of all the company,

Mosè fece come il Signore aveva ordinato; ed essi salirono sul monte Or, sotto gli occhi di tutta la comunità.

28 a nd Moses strippeth Aaron of his garments, and clotheth with them Eleazar his son, and Aaron dieth there on the top of the mount; and Moses cometh down -- Eleazar also -- from the mount,

Mosè spogliò Aaronne dei suoi paramenti e ne rivestì il figlio Eleazar; là morì Aaronne, sulla cima del monte. Poi Mosè ed Eleazar scesero dal monte.

29 a nd all the company see that Aaron hath expired, and they bewail Aaron thirty days -- all the house of Israel.

Quando tutta la comunità vide che Aaronne era morto, tutta la casa d’Israele lo pianse per trenta giorni.
