1 T ruth I say in Christ, I lie not, my conscience bearing testimony with me in the Holy Spirit,

Dico la verità in Cristo, non mento – poiché la mia coscienza me lo conferma per mezzo dello Spirito Santo –,

2 t hat I have great grief and unceasing pain in my heart --

ho una grande tristezza e una sofferenza continua nel mio cuore;

3 f or I was wishing, I myself, to be anathema from the Christ -- for my brethren, my kindred, according to the flesh,

perché io stesso vorrei essere anatema, separato da Cristo, per amore dei miei fratelli, miei parenti secondo la carne,

4 w ho are Israelites, whose the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the lawgiving, and the service, and the promises,

cioè gli Israeliti, ai quali appartengono l’adozione, la gloria, i patti, la legislazione, il servizio sacro e le promesse;

5 w hose the fathers, and of whom the Christ, according to the flesh, who is over all, God blessed to the ages. Amen.

ai quali appartengono i padri e dai quali proviene, secondo la carne, il Cristo, che è sopra tutte le cose Dio benedetto in eterno. Amen!

6 A nd it is not possible that the word of God hath failed; for not all who of Israel are these Israel;

Però non è che la parola di Dio sia caduta a terra; infatti non tutti i discendenti d’Israele sono Israele,

7 n or because they are seed of Abraham all children, but -- `in Isaac shall a seed be called to thee;'

né, per il fatto di essere stirpe di Abraamo, sono tutti figli di Abraamo; anzi: «È in Isacco che ti sarà riconosciuta una discendenza».

8 t hat is, the children of the flesh -- these not children of God; but the children of the promise are reckoned for seed;

Cioè, non i figli della carne sono figli di Dio; ma i figli della promessa sono considerati come discendenza.

9 f or the word of promise this; `According to this time I will come, and there shall be to Sarah a son.'

Infatti questa è la parola della promessa: «In questo tempo verrò, e Sara avrà un figlio».

10 A nd not only, but also Rebecca, having conceived by one -- Isaac our father --

Ma c’è di più! Anche a Rebecca avvenne la medesima cosa quando ebbe concepito figli da un solo uomo, da Isacco nostro padre;

11 ( for they being not yet born, neither having done anything good or evil, that the purpose of God, according to choice, might remain; not of works, but of Him who is calling,) it was said to her --

poiché, prima che i gemelli fossero nati e che avessero fatto del bene o del male (affinché rimanesse fermo il proponimento di Dio, secondo elezione,

12 ` The greater shall serve the less;'

che dipende non da opere, ma da colui che chiama), le fu detto: «Il maggiore servirà il minore»;

13 a ccording as it hath been written, `Jacob I did love, and Esau I did hate.'

com’è scritto: «Ho amato Giacobbe e ho odiato Esaù ». Sovranità di Dio

14 W hat, then, shall we say? unrighteousness with God? let it not be!

Che diremo dunque? Vi è forse ingiustizia in Dio? No di certo!

15 f or to Moses He saith, `I will do kindness to whom I do kindness, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion;'

Poiché egli dice a Mosè: «Io avrò misericordia di chi avrò misericordia e avrò compassione di chi avrò compassione».

16 s o, then -- not of him who is willing, nor of him who is running, but of God who is doing kindness:

Non dipende dunque né da chi vuole né da chi corre, ma da Dio che fa misericordia.

17 f or the Writing saith to Pharaoh -- `For this very thing I did raise thee up, that I might shew in thee My power, and that My name might be declared in all the land;'

La Scrittura infatti dice al faraone: «Appunto per questo ti ho suscitato: per mostrare in te la mia potenza e perché il mio nome sia proclamato per tutta la terra».

18 s o, then, to whom He willeth, He doth kindness, and to whom He willeth, He doth harden.

Così dunque egli fa misericordia a chi vuole e indurisce chi vuole.

19 T hou wilt say, then, to me, `Why yet doth He find fault? for His counsel who hath resisted?'

Tu allora mi dirai: «Perché rimprovera egli ancora? Poiché chi può resistere alla sua volontà?»

20 n ay, but, O man, who art thou that art answering again to God? shall the thing formed say to Him who did form, Why me didst thou make thus?

Piuttosto, o uomo, chi sei tu che replichi a Dio? La cosa plasmata dirà forse a colui che la plasmò: «Perché mi hai fatta così?»

21 h ath not the potter authority over the clay, out of the same lump to make the one vessel to honour, and the one to dishonour?

Il vasaio non è forse padrone dell’argilla per trarre dalla stessa pasta un vaso per uso nobile e un altro per uso ignobile?

22 A nd if God, willing to shew the wrath and to make known His power, did endure, in much long suffering, vessels of wrath fitted for destruction,

Che c’è da contestare se Dio, volendo manifestare la sua ira e far conoscere la sua potenza, ha sopportato con grande pazienza dei vasi d’ira preparati per la perdizione,

23 a nd that He might make known the riches of His glory on vessels of kindness, that He before prepared for glory, whom also He did call -- us --

e ciò per far conoscere la ricchezza della sua gloria verso dei vasi di misericordia che aveva già prima preparati per la gloria,

24 n ot only out of Jews, but also out of nations,

cioè verso di noi, che egli ha chiamato non soltanto fra i Giudei ma anche fra gli stranieri?

25 a s also in Hosea He saith, `I will call what not My people -- My people; and her not beloved -- Beloved,

Così egli dice appunto in Osea: «Io chiamerò “mio popolo” quello che non era mio popolo e “amata” quella che non era amata»;

26 a nd it shall be -- in the place where it was said to them, Ye not My people; there they shall be called sons of the living God.'

e: «Avverrà che nel luogo dov’era stato detto loro: “Voi non siete mio popolo”, là saranno chiamati “figli del Dio vivente”».

27 A nd Isaiah doth cry concerning Israel, `If the number of the sons of Israel may be as the sand of the sea, the remnant shall be saved;

Isaia poi esclama riguardo a Israele: « Anche se il numero dei figli d’Israele fosse come la sabbia del mare, solo il resto sarà salvato;

28 f or a matter He is finishing, and is cutting short in righteousness, because a matter cut short will the Lord do upon the land.

perché il Signore eseguirà la sua parola sulla terra in modo rapido e definitivo ».

29 a nd according as Isaiah saith before, `Except the Lord of Sabaoth did leave to us a seed, as Sodom we had become, and as Gomorrah we had been made like.'

Come Isaia aveva detto prima: «Se il Signore degli eserciti non ci avesse lasciato una discendenza, saremmo diventati come Sodoma e saremmo stati simili a Gomorra». Israele e la giustizia che si ottiene per fede

30 W hat, then, shall we say? that nations who are not pursuing righteousness did attain to righteousness, and righteousness that of faith,

Che diremo dunque? Diremo che degli stranieri, i quali non ricercavano la giustizia, hanno conseguito la giustizia, però la giustizia che deriva dalla fede;

31 a nd Israel, pursuing a law of righteousness, at a law of righteousness did not arrive;

mentre Israele, che ricercava una legge di giustizia, non ha raggiunto questa legge.

32 w herefore? because -- not by faith, but as by works of law; for they did stumble at the stone of stumbling,

Perché? Perché l’ha ricercata non per fede, ma per opere. Essi hanno urtato nella pietra d’inciampo,

33 a ccording as it hath been written, `Lo, I place in Sion a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence; and every one who is believing thereon shall not be ashamed.'

come è scritto: «Ecco, io metto in Sion un sasso d’inciampo e una pietra di scandalo; ma chi crede in lui non sarà deluso».
