1 A nd Jehoshaphat king of Judah turneth back unto his house in peace to Jerusalem,

Giosafat, re di Giuda, tornò sano e salvo a casa sua a Gerusalemme.

2 a nd go out unto his presence doth Jehu son of Hanani, the seer, and saith unto king Jehoshaphat, `To give help to the wicked, and to those hating Jehovah, dost thou love? and for this against thee wrath from before Jehovah,

Il veggente Ieu, figlio di Canani, andò incontro a Giosafat e gli disse: «Dovevi tu dare aiuto a un empio e amare quelli che odiano il Signore ? Per questo fatto hai attirato su di te l’ira del Signore.

3 b ut good things have been found with thee, for thou hast put away the shrines out of the land, and hast prepared thy heart to seek God.'

Tuttavia si sono trovate in te delle buone cose, poiché hai fatto sparire dal paese gli idoli di Astarte e hai applicato il tuo cuore alla ricerca di Dio». Riforma dell’amministrazione della giustizia

4 A nd Jehoshaphat dwelleth in Jerusalem, and he turneth back and goeth out among the people from Beer-Sheba unto the hill-country of Ephraim, and bringeth them back unto Jehovah, God of their fathers.

Giosafat rimase a Gerusalemme; poi fece di nuovo un viaggio in mezzo al popolo, da Beer-Sceba alla regione montuosa di Efraim, riconducendoli al Signore, Dio dei loro padri.

5 A nd he establisheth judges in the land, in all the fenced cities of Judah, for every city,

Stabilì dei giudici nel paese, in tutte le città fortificate di Giuda, città per città, e disse ai giudici:

6 a nd saith unto the judges, `See what ye are doing -- for not for man do ye judge, but for Jehovah, who with you in the matter of judgment;

«Badate bene a quello che fate; poiché voi amministrate la giustizia non per servire un uomo, ma per servire il Signore, il quale sarà con voi negli affari della giustizia.

7 a nd now, let fear of Jehovah be upon you, observe and do, for there is not with Jehovah our God perverseness, and acceptance of faces, and taking of a bribe.'

Ora, il timore del Signore sia in voi; agite con prudenza, poiché presso il Signore, nostro Dio, non c’è perversità, né favoritismi, né si prendono regali».

8 A nd also in Jerusalem hath Jehoshaphat appointed of the Levites, and of the priests, and of the heads of the fathers of Israel, for the judgment of Jehovah, and for strife; and they turn back to Jerusalem,

Giosafat, tornato che fu a Gerusalemme, stabilì anche qui dei Leviti, dei sacerdoti e dei capi delle case patriarcali d’Israele per amministrare la giustizia del Signore in caso di controversie.

9 a nd he layeth a charge upon them, saying, `Thus do ye do in the fear of Jehovah, in faithfulness, and with a perfect heart,

E diede loro i suoi ordini, dicendo: «Voi farete così, con timore del Signore, con fedeltà e con cuore integro:

10 a nd any strife that cometh in unto you of your brethren who are dwelling in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and command, statutes, and judgments, then ye have warned them and they become not guilty before Jehovah, and wrath hath not been on you and on your brethren; thus do ye do, and ye are not guilty.

in qualunque causa che vi sia portata davanti dai vostri fratelli abitanti nelle loro città, sia che si tratti di omicidio o di una legge o di un comandamento o di uno statuto o di un precetto, avvisateli, affinché non si rendano colpevoli verso il Signore, e l’ira sua non ricada su di voi e sui vostri fratelli. Così facendo, voi non vi renderete colpevoli.

11 ` And, lo, Amariah the head priest over you for every matter of Jehovah, and Zebadiah son of Ishmael, the leader of the house of Judah, for every matter of the king, and officers the Levites before you; be strong and do, and Jehovah is with the good.'

Il sommo sacerdote Amaria vi sarà preposto per tutti gli affari che concernono il Signore, e Zebadia, figlio d’Ismaele, capo della casa di Giuda, per tutti gli affari che concernono il re; e avete a vostra disposizione dei Leviti, come ufficiali. Fatevi coraggio, mettetevi all’opera, e il Signore sia con chi è buono».
