1 G o to and fro in streets of Jerusalem, And see, I pray you, and know, And seek in her broad places, if ye find a man, If there be one doing judgment, seeking stedfastness -- Then am I propitious to her.

«Andate per le vie di Gerusalemme! Guardate, informatevi e cercate per le sue piazze se vi trovate un uomo, se ve n’è uno solo che pratichi la giustizia, che cerchi la fedeltà; e io la perdonerò.

2 A nd if they say, `Jehovah liveth,' Surely to a falsehood they swear.

Anche quando dicono: “Com’è vero che il Signore vive”, è certo che giurano il falso».

3 J ehovah, Thine eyes, are they not on stedfastness? Thou hast smitten them, and they have not grieved, Thou hast consumed them, They have refused to receive instruction, They made their faces harder than a rock, They have refused to turn back.

Signore, i tuoi occhi non cercano forse la fedeltà? Tu li colpisci, e quelli non sentono nulla; tu li consumi, e quelli rifiutano di ricevere la correzione; essi hanno reso il loro volto più duro della roccia, rifiutano di convertirsi.

4 A nd I -- I said, `Surely these poor, They have been foolish, For they have not known the way of Jehovah, The judgment of their God.

Io dicevo: «Questi non sono che miseri, insensati che non conoscono la via del Signore, il giudizio del loro Dio»;

5 I get me to the great, and I speak with them, For they have known the way of Jehovah, The judgment of their God.' Surely they together have broken the yoke, They have drawn away the bands.

io andrò dai grandi e parlerò loro, perché essi conoscono la via del Signore, il giudizio del loro Dio; ma anch’essi tutti quanti hanno spezzato il giogo, hanno rotto i legami.

6 T herefore smitten them hath a lion out of the forest, A wolf of the deserts doth spoil them, A leopard is watching over their cities, Every one who is going out of them is torn, For many have been their transgressions, Mighty have been their backslidings.

Perciò il leone della foresta li uccide, il lupo del deserto li distrugge, il leopardo sta in agguato presso le loro città; chiunque ne uscirà sarà sbranato, perché le loro trasgressioni sono numerose, le loro infedeltà sono aumentate.

7 F or this I am not propitious to thee, Thy sons have forsaken Me, And are satisfied by that which is not god, I satisfy them, and they commit adultery, And at the house of a harlot They gather themselves together.

«Perché ti dovrei perdonare? I tuoi figli mi hanno abbandonato, giurano per degli dèi che non esistono. Io li ho saziati ed essi si danno all’adulterio, si affollano nella casa della prostituta.

8 F ed horses -- they have been early risers, Each to the wife of his neighbour they neigh.

Sono come tanti stalloni ben pasciuti e focosi; ognuno di essi nitrisce dietro la moglie del prossimo.

9 F or these do I not lay a charge? An affirmation of Jehovah, And on a nation such as this, Doth not My soul avenge itself?

Non li dovrei punire per queste cose?», dice il Signore, «Non dovrei vendicarmi di una simile nazione?

10 G o ye up on her walls, and destroy, And a completion make not, Turn aside her branches, for they not Jehovah's,

«Salite sulle sue mura e distruggete, ma non la finite del tutto; portate via i suoi tralci, perché non sono del Signore!

11 F or dealt treacherously against Me have the house of Israel, And the house of Judah, an affirmation of Jehovah.

Infatti la casa d’Israele e la casa di Giuda mi hanno tradito», dice il Signore.

12 T hey have lied against Jehovah, And they say, ` not He, Nor come in against us doth evil, Yea, sword and famine we do not see.

Rinnegano il Signore e dicono: «Non esiste; nessun male ci verrà addosso, noi non vedremo né spada né fame;

13 A nd the prophets become wind, And the word is not in them,' -- thus it is done by them.

i profeti non sono che vento e nessuno parla in essi. Quel che minacciano sia fatto a loro!»

14 T herefore, thus said Jehovah, God of Hosts, Because of your speaking this word, Lo, I am making My words in thy mouth become fire, And this people wood, and it hath devoured them.

Perciò così parla il Signore, Dio degli eserciti: «Poiché avete detto quelle parole, ecco, io farò in modo che la mia parola sia come fuoco nella tua bocca, che questo popolo sia come legno e che quel fuoco lo divori.

15 L o, I am bringing against you a nation from afar, O house of Israel, an affirmation of Jehovah, A nation -- strong it, a nation -- from of old it, A nation -- thou knowest not its tongue, Nor understandest what it speaketh.

Ecco, io faccio venire da lontano una nazione contro di voi, casa d’Israele», dice il Signore; «una nazione valorosa, una nazione antica, una nazione della quale tu non conosci la lingua e non capisci le parole.

16 I ts quiver as an open sepulchre, All of them -- mighty ones.

La sua faretra è un sepolcro aperto; tutti quanti sono valorosi.

17 A nd it hath consumed thy harvest and thy bread, They consume thy sons, and thy daughters, It consumeth thy flock, and thy herd, It consumeth thy vine, and thy fig-tree, It maketh poor thy fenced cities, In which thou art trusting -- by the sword.

Essa divorerà i tuoi raccolti e il tuo pane, divorerà i tuoi figli e le tue figlie, divorerà le tue pecore e i tuoi buoi, divorerà le tue vigne e i tuoi fichi; abbatterà con la spada le tue città fortificate nelle quali confidi.

18 A nd even in those days, an affirmation of Jehovah, I do not make you a completion.

Ma anche in quei giorni», dice il Signore, «io non ti finirò del tutto.

19 A nd it hath come to pass, when ye say, `For what hath Jehovah our God done to us all these?' That thou hast said unto them, `As ye have forsaken Me, And serve the gods of a foreigner in your land, So do ye serve strangers in a land not yours.

Quando direte: “Perché il Signore, il nostro Dio, ci ha fatto tutto questo?”, tu risponderai loro: “Come voi mi avete abbandonato e avete servito dèi stranieri nel vostro paese, così servirete gli stranieri in un paese che non è vostro”.

20 D eclare ye this in the house of Jacob, And sound ye it in Judah, saying,

«Annunciate questo alla casa di Giacobbe, proclamatelo in Giuda e dite:

21 H ear ye, I pray you, this, O people, foolish and without heart, Eyes they have, and they see not, Ears they have, and they hear not.

“Ascoltate ora questo, popolo stolto e senza cuore: hanno occhi, ma non vedono, hanno orecchi, ma non odono.

22 M e do ye not fear, an affirmation of Jehovah? From My presence are ye not pained? Who hath made sand the border of the sea, A limit age-during, and it passeth not over it, They shake themselves, and they are not able, Yea, sounded have its billows, and they pass not over.

Voi non mi temerete?”, dice il Signore, “Non temerete davanti a me? Io ho posto la sabbia come limite al mare, barriera eterna che esso non oltrepasserà mai. I suoi flutti si agitano, ma sono impotenti; muggono, ma non la sormontano.

23 A nd this people hath an apostate and rebellious heart, They have turned aside, and they go on.

Ma questo popolo ha un cuore indocile e ribelle; si voltano indietro e se ne vanno.

24 A nd they have not said in their heart, `Let us fear, we pray you, Jehovah our God, who is giving rain, The sprinkling and the gathered, in its season, The appointed weeks of harvest He keepeth for us.'

Non dicono in cuor loro: ‘Temiamo il Signore, il nostro Dio, che dà la pioggia a suo tempo: la pioggia della prima e dell’ultima stagione, che ci mantiene le settimane fissate per la mietitura’.

25 Y our iniquities have turned these away, And your sins have kept the good from you.

Le vostre iniquità hanno sconvolto queste cose; i vostri peccati vi hanno privati del benessere.

26 F or the wicked have been found among My people. It looketh about the covering of snares, They have set up a trap -- men they capture.

Poiché fra il mio popolo si trovano degli empi; essi spiano come cacciatori in agguato, tendono tranelli, acchiappano uomini.

27 A s a cage full of fowls, So their houses are full of deceit, Therefore they have been great, and are rich.

Come una gabbia è piena di uccelli, così le loro case sono piene di frode; perciò diventano grandi e si arricchiscono.

28 T hey have been fat, they have shone, Yea, they have overpassed the acts of the evil, Judgment they have not judged, The judgment of the fatherless -- and they prosper, And the judgment of the needy they have not judged.

Ingrassano, hanno il volto lucido, oltrepassano ogni limite di male. Non difendono la causa, la causa dell’orfano, eppure prosperano; non fanno giustizia nei processi dei poveri.

29 F or these do not I inspect, an affirmation of Jehovah, On a nation such as this, Doth not My soul avenge itself?

Non dovrei forse punire queste cose?”, dice il Signore, “Non dovrei vendicarmi di una simile nazione?

30 A n astonishing and horrible thing hath been in the land.

Cose spaventevoli e orribili si fanno nel paese:

31 T he prophets have prophesied falsely, And the priests bear rule by their means, And My people have loved so, And what do they at its latter end?

i profeti profetizzano bugiardamente, i sacerdoti governano agli ordini dei profeti e il mio popolo ha piacere che sia così. Che cosa farete voi quando verrà la fine?”
