1 C ome near, ye nations, to hear, And ye peoples, give attention, Hear doth the earth and its fulness, The world, and all its productions.

Accostatevi, nazioni, per ascoltare! Voi, popoli, state attenti! Ascolti la terra con ciò che la riempie, il mondo con tutto ciò che produce!

2 F or wrath to Jehovah against all the nations, And fury against all their host, He hath devoted them to destruction, He hath given them to slaughter.

Poiché il Signore è indignato contro tutte le nazioni, è adirato contro tutti i loro eserciti; egli le vota allo sterminio, le dà in balìa alla strage.

3 A nd their wounded are cast out, And their carcases cause their stench to ascend, And melted have been mountains from their blood.

I loro uccisi sono gettati via, i loro cadaveri esalano fetore e i monti si sciolgono nel loro sangue.

4 A nd consumed have been all the host of the heavens, And rolled together as a book have been the heavens, And all their hosts do fade, As the fading of a leaf of a vine, And as the fading one of a fig-tree.

Tutto l’esercito del cielo si dissolve; i cieli sono arrotolati come un libro e tutto il loro esercito cade, come cade la foglia della vite, come cade il fogliame morto dal fico.

5 F or soaked in the heavens was My sword, Lo, on Edom it cometh down, On the people of My curse for judgment.

La mia spada si è inebriata nel cielo; ecco, essa sta per piombare su Edom, sul popolo che ho votato allo sterminio, per farne giustizia.

6 A sword to Jehovah -- it hath been full of blood, It hath been made fat with fatness, With blood of lambs and he-goats. With fat of kidneys of rams, For a sacrifice to Jehovah in Bozrah, And a great slaughter in the land of Edom.

La spada del Signore è piena di sangue, è coperta di grasso, di sangue d’agnelli e di capri, di grasso di rognone di montoni; poiché il Signore fa un sacrificio a Bosra e una grande strage nel paese di Edom.

7 A nd come down have reems with them, And bullocks with bulls, And soaked hath been their land from blood, And their dust from fatness is made fat.

Cadono con quelli i bufali, i vitelli e i tori; il loro suolo è inebriato di sangue, la loro polvere è impregnata di grasso.

8 ( For a day of vengeance to Jehovah, A year of recompences for Zion's strife,)

Poiché è il giorno della vendetta del Signore, l’anno della retribuzione per la causa di Sion.

9 A nd turned have been her streams to pitch, And her dust to brimstone, And her land hath become burning pitch.

I torrenti di Edom saranno mutati in pece e la sua polvere in zolfo; la sua terra diventerà pece ardente.

10 B y night and by day she is not quenched, To the age go up doth her smoke, From generation to generation she is waste, For ever and ever, none is passing into her.

Non si spegnerà né notte né giorno, il fumo ne salirà per sempre; di età in età rimarrà deserta, nessuno vi passerà mai più.

11 A nd possess her do pelican and hedge-hog, And owl and raven dwell in her, And He hath stretched out over her A line of vacancy, and stones of emptiness.

Il pellicano e il porcospino ne prenderanno possesso, la civetta e il corvo vi abiteranno; il Signore vi stenderà la corda della desolazione, il livello del deserto.

12 t he kingdom her freemen they call, But there are none there, And all her princes are at an end.

Quanto ai suoi nobili, non ce ne saranno più per proclamare un re; tutti i suoi prìncipi saranno ridotti a nulla.

13 A nd gone up her palaces have thorns, Nettle and bramble in her fortresses, And it hath been a habitation of dragons, A court for daughters of an ostrich.

Nei suoi palazzi cresceranno le spine; nelle sue fortezze le ortiche e i cardi; diventerà luogo di sciacalli, un recinto per gli struzzi.

14 A nd met have Ziim with Aiim, And the goat for its companion calleth, Only there rested hath the night-owl, And hath found for herself a place of rest.

Le bestie del deserto vi incontreranno i cani selvatici, le capre selvatiche vi chiameranno le compagne; là Lilit farà la sua abitazione e vi troverà il suo luogo di riposo.

15 T here made her nest hath the bittern, Yea, she layeth, and hath hatched, And hath gathered under her shadow, Only there gathered have been vultures, Each with its companion.

Là il serpente farà il suo nido, deporrà le sue uova, le coverà e raccoglierà i suoi piccoli sotto di sé; là si raccoglieranno gli avvoltoi, l’uno chiamando l’altro.

16 S eek out of the book of Jehovah, and read, One of these hath not been lacking, None hath missed its companion, For My mouth -- it hath commanded, And His spirit -- He hath gathered them.

Cercate nel libro del Signore e leggete; nessuna di quelle bestie vi mancherà, nessuna sarà privata della sua compagna, poiché la sua bocca l’ha comandato e il suo soffio li radunerà.

17 A nd He hath cast for them a lot, And His hand hath apportioned to them by line, Unto the age they possess it, To all generations they dwell in it!

Egli stesso ha tirato a sorte per essi, la sua mano ha diviso tra di loro con la corda il paese; quelli ne avranno il possesso per sempre, vi abiteranno di età in età.
