1 T o the Overseer. -- By a servant of Jehovah, by David, who hath spoken to Jehovah the words of this song in the day Jehovah delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul, and he saith: -- I love Thee, O Jehovah, my strength.

2 J ehovah my rock, and my bulwark, And my deliverer, My God my rock, I trust in Him: My shield, and a horn of my salvation, My high tower.

Il Signore è la mia rocca, la mia fortezza, il mio liberatore; il mio Dio, la mia rupe, in cui mi rifugio, il mio scudo, il mio potente salvatore, il mio alto rifugio.

3 T he `Praised One' I call Jehovah, And from my enemies I am saved.

Io invocai il Signore, che è degno d’ogni lode, e fui salvato dai miei nemici.

4 C ompassed me have cords of death, And streams of the worthless make me afraid.

I legami della morte mi avevano circondato, i torrenti della distruzione mi avevano spaventato.

5 C ords of Sheol have surrounded me, Before me have been snares of death.

I legami del soggiorno dei morti mi avevano attorniato, i lacci della morte mi avevano sorpreso.

6 I n mine adversity I call Jehovah, And unto my God I cry. He heareth from His temple my voice, And My cry before Him cometh into His ears.

Nella mia angoscia invocai il Signore, gridai al mio Dio. Egli udì la mia voce dal suo tempio, il mio grido giunse a lui, ai suoi orecchi.

7 A nd shake and tremble doth the earth, And foundations of hills are troubled, And they shake -- because He hath wrath.

Allora la terra fu scossa e tremò, le fondamenta dei monti furono smosse e scrollate; perché egli era colmo di sdegno.

8 G one up hath smoke by His nostrils, And fire from His mouth consumeth, Coals have been kindled by it.

Un fumo saliva dalle sue narici; un fuoco consumante gli usciva dalla bocca e ne venivano fuori carboni accesi.

9 A nd He inclineth the heavens, and cometh down, And thick darkness under His feet.

Egli abbassò i cieli e discese, una fitta nube aveva sotto i piedi.

10 A nd He rideth on a cherub, and doth fly, And He flieth on wings of wind.

Cavalcava un cherubino e volava; volava veloce sulle ali del vento.

11 H e maketh darkness His secret place, Round about Him His tabernacle, Darkness of waters, thick clouds of the skies.

Aveva fatto delle tenebre la sua stanza nascosta; aveva posto intorno a sé, per suo padiglione, l’oscurità delle acque, le dense nubi dei cieli.

12 F rom the brightness over-against Him His thick clouds have passed on, Hail and coals of fire.

Per lo splendore che emanava da lui, le dense nubi si sciolsero con grandine e con carboni ardenti.

13 A nd thunder in the heavens doth Jehovah, And the Most High giveth forth His voice, Hail and coals of fire.

Il Signore tuonò nei cieli, l’Altissimo fece udire la sua voce con grandine e con carboni ardenti.

14 A nd He sendeth His arrows and scattereth them, And much lightning, and crusheth them.

Scagliò le sue saette e disperse i nemici; lanciò folgori in gran numero e li mise in fuga.

15 A nd seen are the streams of waters, And revealed are foundations of the earth. From Thy rebuke, O Jehovah, From the breath of the spirit of Thine anger.

Allora apparve il fondo del mare e le fondamenta del mondo furono scoperte al tuo rimprovero, o Signore, al soffio del vento delle tue narici.

16 H e sendeth from above -- He taketh me, He draweth me out of many waters.

Egli tese dall’alto la mano e mi prese, mi trasse fuori dalle grandi acque.

17 H e delivereth me from my strong enemy, And from those hating me, For they have been stronger than I.

Mi liberò dal mio potente nemico, da quelli che mi odiavano, perché erano più forti di me.

18 T hey go before me in a day of my calamity And Jehovah is for a support to me.

Essi mi erano piombati addosso nel dì della mia calamità, ma il Signore fu il mio sostegno.

19 A nd He bringeth me forth to a large place, He draweth me out, because He delighted in me.

Egli mi trasse fuori al largo, mi liberò, perché mi gradisce.

20 J ehovah doth recompense me According to my righteousness, According to the cleanness of my hands, He doth return to me.

Il Signore mi ha ricompensato secondo la mia giustizia, mi ha reso secondo la purezza delle mie mani,

21 F or I have kept the ways of Jehovah, And have not done wickedly against my God.

poiché ho osservato le vie del Signore e non mi sono allontanato dal mio Dio, comportandomi da empio.

22 F or all His judgments before me, And His statutes I turn not from me.

Poiché ho tenuto tutte le sue leggi davanti a me e non ho rifiutato i suoi precetti.

23 A nd I am perfect with him, And I keep myself from mine iniquity.

Sono stato integro verso di lui, mi sono guardato dalla mia iniquità.

24 A nd Jehovah doth return to me, According to my righteousness, According to the cleanness of my hands, Over-against his eyes.

Perciò il Signore mi ha ripagato secondo la mia giustizia, secondo la purezza delle mie mani in sua presenza.

25 W ith the kind Thou showest Thyself kind, With a perfect man showest Thyself perfect.

Tu ti mostri pietoso verso il pio, integro verso l’uomo integro;

26 W ith the pure Thou showest Thyself pure, And with the perverse showest Thyself a wrestler,

ti mostri puro con il puro e ti mostri astuto con il perverso;

27 F or Thou a poor people savest, And the eyes of the high causest to fall.

poiché tu sei colui che salva la gente afflitta e fa abbassare gli occhi alteri.

28 F or Thou -- Thou lightest my lamp, Jehovah my God enlighteneth my darkness.

Sì, tu fai risplendere la mia lampada; il Signore, il mio Dio, illumina le mie tenebre.

29 F or by Thee I run -- a troop! And by my God I leap a wall.

Con te io assalgo tutta una schiera, con il mio Dio salgo sulle mura.

30 G od! perfect His way, The saying of Jehovah is tried, A shield He to all those trusting in Him.

La via di Dio è perfetta; la parola del Signore è purificata con il fuoco; egli è lo scudo di tutti quelli che sperano in lui.

31 F or who God besides Jehovah? And who a rock save our God?

Poiché chi è Dio all’infuori del Signore ? E chi è Rocca all’infuori del nostro Dio,

32 G od! who is girding me strength, And He maketh perfect my way.

il Dio che mi cinge di forza e rende la mia via retta?

33 M aking my feet like hinds, And on my high places causeth me to stand.

Egli rende i miei piedi simili a quelli delle cerve, mi rende saldo sulle mie alture;

34 T eaching my hands for battle, And a bow of brass was brought down by my arms.

35 A nd Thou givest to me the shield of Thy salvation, And Thy right hand doth support me, And Thy lowliness maketh me great.

36 T hou enlargest my step under me, And mine ankles have not slidden.

Tu hai allargato la via davanti ai miei passi e i miei piedi non hanno vacillato.

37 I pursue mine enemies, and overtake them, And turn back not till they are consumed.

Ho inseguito i miei nemici e li ho raggiunti; non sono tornato indietro prima di averli distrutti.

38 I smite them, and they are not able to rise, They fall under my feet,

Li ho abbattuti e non sono potuti risorgere; sono caduti sotto i miei piedi.

39 A nd Thou girdest me strength for battle, Causest my withstanders to bow under me.

Tu m’hai cinto di forza per la guerra; tu hai fatto piegare sotto di me i miei avversari;

40 A s to mine enemies -- Thou hast given to me the neck, As to those hating me -- I cut them off.

hai fatto voltare le spalle davanti a me ai miei nemici e ho distrutto quelli che mi odiavano.

41 T hey cry, and there is no saviour, On Jehovah, and He doth not answer them.

Hanno gridato, ma nessuno li ha salvati; hanno gridato al Signore, ma egli non ha risposto.

42 A nd I beat them as dust before wind, As mire of the streets I empty them out.

Io li ho tritati come polvere al vento, li ho spazzati via come il fango delle strade.

43 T hou dost deliver me From the strivings of the people, Thou placest me for a head of nations, A people I have not known do serve me.

Tu mi hai liberato dal popolo in rivolta, mi hai costituito capo di nazioni; un popolo che non conoscevo mi è stato sottomesso.

44 A t the hearing of the ear they hearken to me, Sons of a stranger feign obedience to me,

Al solo udir parlare di me, mi hanno ubbidito; i figli degli stranieri mi hanno reso omaggio.

45 S ons of a stranger fade away, And are slain out of their close places.

I figli degli stranieri si sono persi d’animo, sono usciti tremanti dai loro nascondigli.

46 J ehovah liveth -- and blessed my rock, And exalted is the God of my salvation.

Il Signore vive: sia benedetta la mia Rocca! Sia esaltato il Dio della mia salvezza!

47 G od -- who is giving vengeance to me, And He subdueth peoples under me,

Il Dio che fa la mia vendetta e mi sottomette i popoli,

48 M y deliverer from mine enemies, Above my withstanders Thou raisest me, From a man of violence dost deliver me.

che mi libera dai miei nemici. Sì, tu m’innalzi sopra i miei avversari, mi salvi dall’uomo violento.

49 T herefore I confess Thee among nations, O Jehovah, And to Thy name I sing praise,

Perciò, o Signore, ti loderò tra le nazioni e salmeggerò al tuo nome.

50 M agnifying the salvation of His king, And doing kindness to His anointed, To David, and to his seed -- unto the age!

Grandi liberazioni egli accorda al suo re, usa benevolenza verso il suo unto, verso Davide e la sua discendenza in eterno».
