1 A nd Ahab hath seventy sons in Samaria, and Jehu writeth letters, and sendeth to Samaria, unto the heads of Jezreel, the elders, and unto the supporters of Ahab, saying,

C’erano a Samaria settanta figli di Acab. Ieu scrisse delle lettere e le mandò a Samaria ai capi della città, agli anziani e ai tutori dei figli di Acab; in esse diceva:

2 ` And now, at the coming in of this letter unto you, and with you sons of your lord, and with you the chariots and the horses, and a fenced city, and the armour,

«Appena avrete ricevuto questa lettera, poiché avete con voi i figli del vostro signore e avete a vostra disposizione carri e cavalli, nonché una città fortificata e delle armi,

3 a nd ye have seen the best and the uprightest of the sons of your lord, and have set on the throne of his father, and fight ye for the house of your lord.'

scegliete il migliore e il più adatto tra i figli del vostro signore, mettetelo sul trono di suo padre e combattete per la casa del vostro signore».

4 A nd they fear very greatly, and say, `Lo, the two kings have not stood before him, and how do we stand -- we?'

Ma quelli ebbero una gran paura e dissero: «Ecco, due re non gli hanno potuto resistere; come potremo resistergli noi?»

5 A nd he who over the house, and he who over the city, and the elders, and the supporters, send unto Jehu, saying, `Thy servants we, and all that thou sayest unto us we do; we do not make any one king -- that which good in thine eyes do.'

Il sovrintendente del palazzo, il governatore della città, gli anziani e i tutori dei figli di Acab mandarono a dire a Ieu: «Noi siamo tuoi servi e faremo tutto quello che ci ordinerai; non eleggeremo nessuno come re; fa’ tu quel che ti piace».

6 A nd he writeth unto them a letter a second time, saying, `If ye for me, and to my voice are hearkening, take the heads of the men -- the sons of your lord, and come unto me about this time to-morrow, to Jezreel;' and the sons of the king seventy men, with the great ones of the city those bringing them up.

Allora Ieu scrisse loro una seconda lettera, nella quale diceva: «Se voi siete per me e volete ubbidire alla mia voce, prendete le teste di quegli uomini, figli del vostro signore, e venite da me, domani a quest’ora, a Izreel». I settanta figli del re stavano dai notabili della città, che li educavano.

7 A nd it cometh to pass, at the coming in of the letter unto them, that they take the sons of the king, and slaughter seventy men, and put their heads in baskets, and send unto him to Jezreel,

Appena questi ebbero ricevuta la lettera, presero i figli del re e li sgozzarono tutti e settanta; poi misero le loro teste in ceste e le mandarono a Ieu, a Izreel.

8 a nd the messenger cometh in, and declareth to him, saying, `They have brought in the heads of the sons of the king,' and he saith, `Make them two heaps at the opening of the gate till the morning.'

Un messaggero andò da Ieu a recargli la notizia, dicendo: «Hanno portato le teste dei figli del re». Ieu rispose: «Mettetele in due mucchi all’entrata della porta della città, fino a domattina».

9 A nd it cometh to pass in the morning, that he goeth out, and standeth, and saith unto all the people, `Righteous are ye; lo, I have conspired against my lord, and slay him -- and who smote all these?

La mattina dopo egli uscì; e, fermatosi, disse a tutto il popolo: «Voi siete giusti; ecco, io congiurai contro il mio signore e l’uccisi; ma chi ha ucciso tutti questi?

10 K now ye now, that nothing doth fall of the word of Jehovah to the earth that Jehovah spake against the house of Ahab, and Jehovah hath done that which He spake by the hand of His servant Elijah.'

Riconoscete dunque che non cade a terra neppure una delle parole che il Signore pronunciò contro la casa di Acab; il Signore ha fatto quello che predisse per mezzo del suo servo Elia».

11 A nd Jehu smiteth all those left to the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men, and his acquaintances, and his priests, till he hath not left to him a remnant.

E Ieu fece morire tutti quelli che erano rimasti della casa di Acab a Izreel, tutti i suoi nobili, i suoi amici e i suoi consiglieri; non ne scampò neppure uno.

12 A nd he riseth, and cometh in and goeth to Samaria; he at the shepherds' shearing-house in the way,

Poi si alzò e partì per andare a Samaria. Strada facendo, giunto alla casa di ritrovo dei pastori,

13 a nd Jehu hath found the brethren of Ahaziah king of Judah, and saith, `Who ye?' and they say, `Brethren of Ahaziah we, and we go down to salute the sons of the king, and the sons of the mistress.'

Ieu s’imbattè nei fratelli di Acazia, re di Giuda, e disse: «Chi siete voi?» Quelli risposero: «Siamo i fratelli di Acazia e scendiamo a salutare i figli del re e i figli della regina».

14 A nd he saith, `Catch them alive;' and they catch them alive, and slaughter them at the pit of the shearing-house, forty and two men, and he hath not left a man of them.

Ieu disse ai suoi: «Prendeteli vivi!» E quelli li presero vivi, e li sgozzarono presso la cisterna della casa di ritrovo. Erano quarantadue, e non ne scampò neppure uno.

15 A nd he goeth thence, and findeth Jehonadab son of Rechab -- to meet him, and blesseth him, and saith unto him, `Is thy heart right, as my heart with thy heart?' and Jehonadab saith, `It is;' -- `Then it is; give thy hand;' and he giveth his hand, and he causeth him to come up into him into the chariot,

Ieu partì di là e trovò Ionadab, figlio di Recab, che gli veniva incontro; lo salutò e gli disse: «Il tuo cuore è leale verso il mio come il mio verso il tuo?» Ionadab rispose: «Lo è». «Se è così», disse Ieu, «dammi la mano». Ionadab gli diede la mano; Ieu lo fece salire vicino a sé sul carro e gli disse:

16 a nd saith, `Come with me, and look on my zeal for Jehovah;' and they cause him to ride in his chariot.

«Vieni con me e vedrai il mio zelo per il Signore!» Così lo portò via nel suo carro.

17 A nd he cometh in to Samaria, and smiteth all those left to Ahab in Samaria, till his destroying him, according to the word of Jehovah that He spake unto Elisha.

Giunto a Samaria, Ieu colpì tutti quelli che rimanevano della casa di Acab a Samaria, finché l’ebbe distrutta, secondo la parola che il Signore aveva detta per mezzo di Elia. Sterminio dei profeti di Baal

18 A nd Jehu gathereth the whole of the people, and saith unto them, `Ahab served Baal a little -- Jehu doth serve him much:

Poi Ieu radunò tutto il popolo e gli parlò così: «Acab ha servito un poco Baal; Ieu lo servirà molto di più.

19 a nd now, all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests, call ye unto me; let not a man be lacking, for a great sacrifice I have for Baal; every one who is lacking -- he doth not live;' and Jehu hath done in subtilty, in order to destroy the servants of Baal.

Convocate presso di me tutti i profeti di Baal, tutti i suoi servitori, tutti i suoi sacerdoti; non ne manchi neppure uno! Poiché voglio fare un grande sacrificio a Baal; chi mancherà non vivrà». Ma Ieu faceva questo con astuzia, per distruggere gli adoratori di Baal.

20 A nd Jehu saith, `Sanctify a restraint for Baal;' and they proclaim.

Disse: «Bandite una festa solenne in onore di Baal!» E la festa fu bandita.

21 A nd Jehu sendeth into all Israel, and all the servants of Baal come in, and there hath not been left a man who hath not come in; and they come in to the house of Baal, and the house of Baal is full -- mouth to mouth.

Ieu inviò dei messaggeri per tutto Israele; e tutti gli adoratori di Baal vennero, e neppure uno mancò; entrarono nel tempio di Baal, e il tempio di Baal fu pieno da un capo all’altro.

22 A nd he saith to him who over the wardrobe, `Bring out clothing to all servants of Baal;' and he bringeth out to them the clothing.

Ieu disse a colui che aveva in custodia il vestiario: «Metti fuori i paramenti per tutti gli adoratori di Baal». E quegli mise fuori i paramenti.

23 A nd Jehu goeth in, and Jehonadab son of Rechab, to the house of Baal, and saith to the servants of Baal, `Search and see, lest there be here with you of the servants of Jehovah -- but, the servants of Baal by themselves.'

Allora Ieu, con Ionadab, figlio di Recab, entrò nel tempio di Baal e disse agli adoratori di Baal: «Cercate bene, e guardate che non ci sia qui con voi nessun servo del Signore, ma ci siano soltanto gli adoratori di Baal».

24 A nd they come in to make sacrifices and burnt-offerings, and Jehu hath set for himself in an out-place eighty men, and saith, `The man who letteth escape of the men whom I am bringing in unto your hand -- his soul for his soul.'

Quelli entrarono per offrire sacrifici e olocausti. Or Ieu teneva appostati fuori dal tempio ottanta uomini, ai quali aveva detto: «Colui che lascerà fuggire qualcuno degli uomini che io metto in vostro potere, pagherà con la sua vita la vita di quello».

25 A nd it cometh to pass at his finishing to make the burnt-offering, that Jehu saith to the runners, and to the captains, `Go in, smite them, let none come out;' and they smite them by the mouth of the sword, and the runners and the captains cast out; and they go unto the city, to the house of Baal,

Quando fu finita l’offerta dell’olocausto, Ieu disse ai soldati e ai capitani: «Entrate, uccideteli, e non ne esca neppure uno!» Essi li passarono a fil di spada; poi soldati e capitani ne buttarono là i cadaveri e penetrarono nell’edificio del tempio di Baal;

26 a nd bring out the standing-pillars of the house of Baal, and burn them,

portarono fuori le statue del tempio di Baal e le bruciarono;

27 a nd break down the standing-pillar of Baal, and break down the house of Baal, and appoint it for a draught-house unto this day.

mandarono in frantumi la statua di Baal; demolirono il tempio di Baal e ne fecero un immondezzaio che dura fino a oggi. Idolatria e morte di Ieu

28 A nd Jehu destroyeth Baal out of Israel,

Così Ieu estirpò Baal da Israele;

29 o nly -- the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, that he caused Israel to sin, Jehu hath not turned aside from after them -- the calves of gold that at Beth-El, and in Dan.

tuttavia egli non si allontanò dai peccati con i quali Geroboamo, figlio di Nebat, aveva fatto peccare Israele; cioè non abbandonò i vitelli d’oro che erano a Betel e a Dan.

30 A nd Jehovah saith unto Jehu, `Because that thou hast done well, to do that which right in Mine eyes -- according to all that in My heart thou hast done to the house of Ahab -- the sons of the fourth do sit for thee on the throne of Israel.'

E Il Signore disse a Ieu: «Perché tu hai eseguito puntualmente ciò che è giusto ai miei occhi e hai fatto alla casa di Acab tutto quello che desideravo, i tuoi figli sederanno sul trono d’Israele fino alla quarta generazione».

31 A nd Jehu hath not taken heed to walk in the law of Jehovah, God of Israel, with all his heart, he hath not turned aside from the sins of Jeroboam, that he caused Israel to sin.

Ma Ieu non si preoccupò di seguire con tutto il cuore la legge del Signore, Dio d’Israele; non si allontanò dai peccati con i quali Geroboamo aveva fatto peccare Israele.

32 I n those days hath Jehovah begun to cut off in Israel, and Hazael smiteth them in all the border of Israel,

In quel tempo il Signore cominciò a diminuire il territorio d’Israele; Azael difatti sconfisse gli Israeliti su tutta la loro frontiera:

33 f rom the Jordan, at the sun-rising, the whole land of Gilead, of the Gadite, and the Reubenite, and the Manassahite (from Aroer, that by the brook Arnon), even Gilead and Bashan.

dal Giordano, verso oriente, soggiogò tutto il paese di Galaad, i Gaditi, i Rubeniti e i Manassiti, fino ad Aroer, che sta presso la valle dell’Arnon, vale a dire tutto il paese di Galaad e di Basan.

34 A nd the rest of the matters of Jehu, and all that he did, and all his might, are they not written on the book of the Chronicles of the kings of Israel?

Il resto delle azioni di Ieu, tutto quello che fece e tutte le sue prodezze, si trova scritto nel libro delle Cronache dei re d’Israele.

35 A nd Jehu lieth with his fathers, and they bury him in Samaria, and reign doth Jehoahaz his son in his stead.

Poi Ieu si addormentò con i suoi padri e lo seppellirono a Samaria. Ioacaz, suo figlio, regnò al suo posto.

36 A nd the days that Jehu hath reigned over Israel twenty and eight years, in Samaria.

Il tempo che Ieu regnò sopra Israele a Samaria fu di ventott’anni.
