1 A nd it cometh to pass after this, that Nahash king of the sons of Ammon dieth, and his son reigneth in his stead,

Dopo questo morì Naas, re degli Ammoniti, e suo figlio regnò al suo posto.

2 a nd David saith, `I do kindness with Hanun son of Nahash, for his father did with me kindness;' and David sendeth messengers to comfort him concerning his father. And the servants of David come in unto the land of the sons of Ammon, unto Hanun, to comfort him,

Davide disse: «Io voglio usare benevolenza verso Canun, figlio di Naas, come suo padre ne usò verso di me». Davide inviò dei messaggeri a consolarlo della perdita del padre. Ma quando i servitori di Davide giunsero nel paese dei figli di Ammon, presso Canun per consolarlo,

3 a nd the heads of the sons of Ammon say to Hanun, `Is David honouring thy father, in thine eyes, because he hath sent to thee comforters? in order to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out, the land, have not his servants come in unto thee?'

i prìncipi dei figli di Ammon dissero a Canun: «Credi tu che Davide t’abbia mandato dei consolatori per onorare tuo padre? I suoi servi non sono piuttosto venuti per esplorare la città e distruggerla e per spiare il paese?»

4 A nd Hanun taketh the servants of David, and shaveth them, and cutteth their long robes in the midst, unto the buttocks, and sendeth them away.

Allora Canun prese i servitori di Davide, li fece radere e fece loro tagliare la metà delle vesti fino alle natiche, poi li rimandò.

5 A nd go, and declare to David concerning the men, and he sendeth to meet them -- for the men have been greatly ashamed -- and the king saith, `Dwell in Jericho till that your beard is grown, then ye have returned.'

Intanto vennero alcuni a informare Davide del modo con cui quegli uomini erano stati trattati; e Davide mandò gente a incontrarli, perché quegli uomini provavano grande vergogna. Il re fece dir loro: «Restate a Gerico finché vi sia ricresciuta la barba, poi tornerete».

6 A nd the sons of Ammon see that they have made themselves abhorred by David, and Hanun and the sons of Ammon send a thousand talents of silver, to hire to them, from Aram-Naharaim, and from Aram-Maachah, and from Zobah, chariots and horsemen;

I figli di Ammon videro che si erano attirati l’odio di Davide; e Canun e gli Ammoniti mandarono mille talenti d’argento per assoldare carri e cavalieri presso i Siri di Mesopotamia e presso i Siri di Maaca e di Soba.

7 a nd they hire to them two and thirty thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people, and they come in and encamp before Medeba, and the sons of Ammon have been gathered out of their cities, and come in to the battle.

Assoldarono trentaduemila carri e il re di Maaca con il suo popolo, i quali vennero ad accamparsi di fronte a Medeba. E i figli di Ammon si radunarono dalle loro città, per andare a combattere.

8 A nd David heareth, and sendeth Joab, and all the host of the mighty men,

Quando Davide udì questo, inviò contro di loro Ioab con tutto l’esercito degli uomini valorosi.

9 a nd the sons of Ammon come out and set battle in array at the opening of the city, and the kings who have come by themselves in the field.

I figli di Ammon uscirono e si schierarono per la battaglia all’ingresso della porta della città; e i re che erano venuti in loro soccorso stavano da parte nella campagna.

10 A nd Joab seeth that the front of the battle hath been unto him, before and behind, and he chooseth out of all the choice in Israel, and setteth in array to meet Aram,

Quando Ioab vide che quelli erano pronti ad attaccarlo di fronte e alle spalle, scelse un corpo fra gli uomini migliori d’Israele, lo schierò per la battaglia contro i Siri

11 a nd the remnant of the people he hath given into the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set in array to meet the sons of Ammon.

e mise il resto del popolo sotto gli ordini di suo fratello Abisai, per far fronte ai figli di Ammon;

12 A nd he saith, `If Aram be stronger than I, then thou hast been to me for salvation; and if the sons of Ammon be stronger than thou, then I have saved thee;

poi disse ad Abisai: «Se i Siri sono più forti di me, tu mi verrai in soccorso; e se i figli di Ammon sono più forti di te, verrò io a soccorrerti.

13 b e strong, and we strengthen ourselves, for our people, and for the cities of our God, and Jehovah doth that which is good in His eyes.'

Abbi coraggio, e dimostriamoci forti per il nostro popolo e per le città del nostro Dio; e faccia il Signore quello che gli piacerà».

14 A nd Joab draweth nigh, and the people who with him, before Aram to battle, and they flee from his face;

Poi Ioab, con la gente che aveva con sé, avanzò per attaccare i Siri, i quali fuggirono davanti a lui.

15 a nd the sons of Ammon have seen that Aram hath fled, and they flee -- they also -- from the face of Abishai his brother, and go in to the city. And Joab cometh in to Jerusalem.

Quando i figli di Ammon videro che i Siri erano fuggiti, fuggirono anche loro davanti ad Abisai, fratello di Ioab, e rientrarono nella città. Allora Ioab rientrò a Gerusalemme.

16 A nd Aram seeth that they have been smitten before Israel, and send messengers, and bring out Aram that beyond the River, and Shophach head of the host of Hadarezer before them.

I Siri, vedendosi sconfitti da Israele, inviarono dei messaggeri e fecero venire i Siri che abitavano dall’altra parte del fiume. Sofac, capo dell’esercito di Adadezer, era alla loro testa.

17 A nd it is declared to David, and he gathereth all Israel, and passeth over the Jordan, and cometh in unto them, and setteth in array against them; yea, David setteth in array the battle to meet Aram, and they fight with him;

Il fatto fu riferito a Davide, che radunò tutto Israele, attraversò il Giordano, marciò contro di loro e si dispose in ordine di battaglia contro quelli. Come Davide si fu disposto in ordine di battaglia contro i Siri, questi diedero inizio alla battaglia.

18 a nd Aram fleeth from the face of Israel, and David slayeth of Aram seven thousand charioteers, and forty thousand footmen, and Shophach head of the host he hath put to death.

Ma i Siri fuggirono davanti a Israele; e Davide uccise ai Siri gli uomini di settecento carri e quarantamila fanti, e uccise pure Sofac, capo dell’esercito.

19 A nd the servants of Hadarezer see that they have been smitten before Israel, and they make peace with David and serve him, and Aram hath not been willing to help the sons of Ammon any more.

Quando i servitori di Adadezer si videro sconfitti da Israele, fecero pace con Davide e gli furono sottomessi. E i Siri non vollero più prestare soccorso ai figli di Ammon.
