1 A nd Jehoram son of Ahab hath reigned over Israel, in Samaria, in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and he reigneth twelve years,

Ieoram, figlio di Acab, cominciò a regnare su Israele a Samaria l’anno diciottesimo di Giosafat, re di Giuda, e regnò dodici anni.

2 a nd doth the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, only not like his father, and like his mother, and he turneth aside the standing-pillar of Baal that his father made;

Egli fece ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore, ma non quanto suo padre e sua madre, perché tolse via la statua di Baal, che suo padre aveva fatta.

3 o nly to the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat that he caused Israel to sin he hath cleaved, he hath not turned aside from it.

Tuttavia egli rimase attaccato ai peccati con i quali Geroboamo, figlio di Nebat, aveva fatto peccare Israele; e non se ne distolse.

4 A nd Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-master, and he rendered to the king of Israel a hundred thousand lambs, and a hundred thousand rams, wool,

Allora Mesa, re di Moab, allevava molto bestiame e pagava al re d’Israele un tributo di centomila agnelli e centomila montoni con la loro lana.

5 a nd it cometh to pass at the death of Ahab, that the king of Moab transgresseth against the king of Israel.

Ma, dopo la morte di Acab, il re di Moab si ribellò al re d’Israele.

6 A nd king Jehoram goeth out in that day from Samaria, and inspecteth all Israel,

Il re Ieoram uscì da Samaria e passò in rassegna tutto Israele;

7 a nd goeth and sendeth unto Jehoshaphat king of Judah, saying, `The king of Moab hath transgressed against me; dost thou go with me unto Moab for battle?' and he saith, `I go up, as I, so thou; as my people, so thy people; as my horses, so thy horses.

poi si mise in marcia e mandò a dire a Giosafat, re di Giuda: «Il re di Moab si è ribellato contro di me; vuoi venire con me alla guerra contro Moab?» Quegli rispose: «Verrò; conta su di me come su te stesso, sul mio popolo come sul tuo, sui miei cavalli come sui tuoi».

8 A nd he saith, `Where this -- the way we go up?' and he saith, `The way of the wilderness of Edom.'

E aggiunse: «Per quale via saliremo?» Ieoram rispose: «Per la via del deserto di Edom».

9 A nd the king of Israel goeth, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom, and they turn round the way seven days, and there hath been no water for the camp, and for the cattle that at their feet,

Così il re d’Israele, il re di Giuda e il re di Edom si mossero; e girarono per sette giorni, ma non c’era acqua per l’esercito, né per le bestie da soma che li seguivano.

10 a nd the king of Israel saith, `Alas, for Jehovah hath called for these three kings, to give them into the hand of Moab.'

Allora il re d’Israele disse: «Ahimè, il Signore ha chiamato assieme questi tre re per darli nelle mani di Moab!»

11 A nd Jehoshaphat saith, `Is there not here a prophet of Jehovah, and we seek Jehovah by him?' And one of the servants of the king of Israel answereth and saith, `Here Elisha son of Shaphat, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.'

Ma Giosafat chiese: «Non c’è qui nessun profeta del Signore mediante il quale possiamo consultare il Signore ?» Uno dei servitori del re d’Israele rispose: «C’è qui Eliseo, figlio di Safat, il quale versava l’acqua sulle mani di Elia».

12 A nd Jehoshaphat saith, `The word of Jehovah is with him;' and go down unto him do the king of Israel, and Jehoshaphat, and the king of Edom.

Giosafat disse: «La parola del Signore è con lui». Così il re d’Israele, Giosafat e il re di Edom andarono a trovarlo.

13 A nd Elisha saith unto the king of Israel, `What -- to me and to thee? go unto the prophets of thy father, and unto the prophets of thy mother;' and the king of Israel saith to him, `Nay, for Jehovah hath called for these three kings to give them into the hand of Moab.'

Eliseo disse al re d’Israele: «Che ho a che fare con te? Va’ dai profeti di tuo padre e di tua madre!» Il re d’Israele gli rispose: «No, perché il Signore ha chiamato insieme questi tre re per darli nella mani di Moab».

14 A nd Elisha saith, `Jehovah of Hosts liveth, before whom I have stood; for unless the face of Jehoshaphat king of Judah I am lifting up, I do not look unto thee, nor see thee;

Allora Eliseo disse: «Com’è vero che vive il Signore degli eserciti, del quale sono servitore, se non avessi rispetto per Giosafat, re di Giuda, io non avrei badato a te né ti avrei degnato di uno sguardo.

15 a nd now, bring to me a minstrel; and it hath been, at the playing of the minstrel, that the hand of Jehovah is on him,

Ma ora conducetemi qua un suonatore d’arpa». E mentre il suonatore arpeggiava, la mano del Signore fu sopra Eliseo,

16 a nd he saith, `Thus said Jehovah, Make this valley ditches -- ditches;

che disse: «Così parla il Signore: “Fate in questa valle delle fosse!”

17 f or thus said Jehovah, Ye do not see wind, nor do ye see rain, and that valley is full of water, and ye have drunk -- ye, and your cattle, and your beasts.

Infatti così dice il Signore: “Voi non vedrete vento, non vedrete pioggia, e tuttavia questa valle si riempirà d’acqua; e berrete voi, il vostro bestiame e le vostre bestie da soma.

18 ` And this hath been light in the eyes of Jehovah, and he hath given Moab into your hand,

E questo è ancora poco agli occhi del Signore; perché egli darà anche Moab nelle vostre mani.

19 a nd ye have smitten every fenced city, and every choice city, and every good tree ye cause to fall, and all fountains of waters ye stop, and every good portion ye mar with stones.'

Voi distruggerete tutte le città fortificate e tutte le città importanti, abbatterete tutti i buoni alberi, turerete tutte le sorgenti d’acqua e guasterete con delle pietre ogni buon pezzo di terra”».

20 A nd it cometh to pass in the morning, at the ascending of the -present, that lo, waters are coming in from the way of Edom, and the land is filled with the waters,

La mattina dopo, nell’ora in cui si presenta l’offerta, ecco che l’acqua arrivò dal lato di Edom e il paese ne fu pieno.

21 a nd all Moab have heard that the kings have come up to fight against them, and they are called together, from every one girding on a girdle and upward, and they stand by the border.

Tutti i Moabiti, avendo udito che quei re erano saliti per combattere contro di loro, avevano radunato tutti quelli che erano in età di portare le armi, e si piazzarono alla frontiera.

22 A nd they rise early in the morning, and the sun hath shone on the waters, and the Moabites see, from over-against, the waters red as blood,

La mattina il sole splendeva sulle acque, e i Moabiti, quando si alzarono, videro di fronte a loro le acque rosse come sangue;

23 a nd say, `Blood this; the kings have been surely destroyed, and they smite each his neighbour; and now for spoil, Moab!'

e dissero: «Quello è sangue! Quei re sono di certo venuti alle mani e si sono distrutti fra di loro; ora, Moab, alla preda!»

24 A nd they come in unto the camp of Israel, and the Israelites rise, and smite the Moabites, and they flee from their face; and they enter into Moab, so as to smite Moab,

E avanzarono verso l’accampamento d’Israele; ma gl’Israeliti si fecero avanti e sbaragliarono i Moabiti, che fuggirono davanti a loro. Poi penetrarono nel paese e continuarono a battere Moab.

25 a nd the cities they break down, and every good portion they cast each his stone, and have filled it, and every fountain of water they stop, and every good tree they cause to fall -- till one had left its stones in Kir-Haraseth, and the slingers go round and smite it.

Distrussero le città; riempirono di pietre ogni buon pezzo di terra, ciascuno gettandovi la sua; turarono tutte le sorgenti d’acqua e abbatterono tutti i buoni alberi. Non rimasero che le mura di Chir-Areset, e i tiratori di fionda la circondarono e l’attaccarono.

26 A nd the king of Moab seeth that the battle has been too strong for him, and he taketh with him seven hundred men, drawing sword, to cleave through unto the king of Edom, and they have not been able,

Il re di Moab, vedendo che l’attacco era troppo forte per lui, prese con sé settecento uomini per aprirsi, a spada tratta, un varco fino al re di Edom; ma non vi riuscì.

27 a nd he taketh his son, the first-born who reigneth in his stead, and causeth him to ascend -- a burnt-offering on the wall, and there is great wrath against Israel, and they journey from off him, and turn back to the land.

Allora prese il figlio primogenito, che doveva succedergli al trono, e lo offrì in olocausto sopra le mura. A questa vista, un profondo orrore s’impadronì degli Israeliti, che si allontanarono dal re di Moab e se ne tornarono al loro paese.
