1 W hen therefore the Lord knew that the Pharisees heard that Jesus more disciples doth make and baptize than John,

Quando dunque Gesù seppe che i farisei avevano udito che egli faceva e battezzava più discepoli di Giovanni

2 ( though indeed Jesus himself was not baptizing, but his disciples,)

(sebbene non fosse Gesù che battezzava, ma i suoi discepoli),

3 h e left Judea and went away again to Galilee,

lasciò la Giudea e se ne andò di nuovo in Galilea.

4 a nd it was behoving him to go through Samaria.

Ora doveva passare per la Samaria.

5 H e cometh, therefore, to a city of Samaria, called Sychar, near to the place that Jacob gave to Joseph his son;

Giunse dunque a una città della Samaria, chiamata Sicar, vicina al podere che Giacobbe aveva dato a suo figlio Giuseppe;

6 a nd there was there a well of Jacob. Jesus therefore having been weary from the journeying, was sitting thus on the well; it was as it were the sixth hour;

e là c’era la fonte di Giacobbe. Gesù dunque, stanco del cammino, stava così a sedere presso la fonte. Era circa l’ora sesta.

7 t here cometh a woman out of Samaria to draw water. Jesus saith to her, `Give me to drink;'

Una donna della Samaria venne ad attingere l’acqua. Gesù le disse: «Dammi da bere».

8 f or his disciples were gone away to the city, that they may buy victuals;

(Infatti i suoi discepoli erano andati in città a comprare da mangiare.)

9 t he Samaritan woman therefore saith to him, `How dost thou, being a Jew, ask drink from me, being a Samaritan woman?' for Jews have no dealing with Samaritans.

La donna samaritana allora gli disse: «Come mai tu che sei Giudeo chiedi da bere a me, che sono una donna samaritana?» Infatti i Giudei non hanno relazioni con i Samaritani.

10 J esus answered and said to her, `If thou hadst known the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to thee, Give me to drink, thou wouldest have asked him, and he would have given thee living water.'

Gesù le rispose: «Se tu conoscessi il dono di Dio e chi è che ti dice: “Dammi da bere”, tu stessa gliene avresti chiesto, ed egli ti avrebbe dato dell’acqua viva».

11 T he woman saith to him, `Sir, thou hast not even a vessel to draw with, and the well is deep; whence, then, hast thou the living water?

La donna gli disse: «Signore, tu non hai nulla per attingere, e il pozzo è profondo; da dove avresti dunque quest’acqua viva?

12 A rt thou greater than our father Jacob, who did give us the well, and himself out of it did drink, and his sons, and his cattle?'

Sei tu più grande di Giacobbe, nostro padre, che ci diede questo pozzo e ne bevve egli stesso con i suoi figli e il suo bestiame?»

13 J esus answered and said to her, `Every one who is drinking of this water shall thirst again;

Gesù le rispose: «Chiunque beve di quest’acqua avrà di nuovo sete;

14 b ut whoever may drink of the water that I will give him, may not thirst -- to the age; and the water that I will give him shall become in him a well of water, springing up to life age-during.'

ma chi beve dell’acqua che io gli darò, non avrà mai più sete; anzi, l’acqua che io gli darò diventerà in lui una fonte d’acqua che scaturisce in vita eterna».

15 T he woman saith unto him, `Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come hither to draw.'

La donna gli disse: «Signore, dammi di quest’acqua, affinché io non abbia più sete e non venga più fin qui ad attingere».

16 J esus saith to her, `Go, call thy husband, and come hither;'

Egli le disse: «Va’ a chiamare tuo marito e vieni qua».

17 t he woman answered and said, `I have not a husband.' Jesus saith to her, `Well didst thou say -- A husband I have not;

La donna gli rispose: «Non ho marito». E Gesù: «Hai detto bene: “Non ho marito”,

18 f or five husbands thou hast had, and, now, he whom thou hast is not thy husband; this hast thou said truly.'

perché hai avuto cinque mariti, e quello che hai ora non è tuo marito; ciò che hai detto è vero».

19 T he woman saith to him, `Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet;

La donna gli disse: «Signore, vedo che tu sei un profeta.

20 o ur fathers in this mountain did worship, and ye -- ye say that in Jerusalem is the place where it behoveth to worship.'

I nostri padri hanno adorato su questo monte, ma voi dite che è a Gerusalemme il luogo dove bisogna adorare».

21 J esus saith to her, `Woman, believe me, that there doth come an hour, when neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, shall ye worship the Father;

Gesù le disse: «Donna, credimi; l’ora viene che né su questo monte né a Gerusalemme adorerete il Padre.

22 y e worship what ye have not known; we worship what we have known, because the salvation is of the Jews;

Voi adorate quel che non conoscete; noi adoriamo quel che conosciamo, perché la salvezza viene dai Giudei.

23 b ut, there cometh an hour, and it now is, when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father also doth seek such to worship him;

Ma l’ora viene, anzi è già venuta, che i veri adoratori adoreranno il Padre in spirito e verità; poiché il Padre cerca tali adoratori.

24 G od a Spirit, and those worshipping Him, in spirit and truth it doth behove to worship.'

Dio è Spirito, e quelli che lo adorano bisogna che lo adorino in spirito e verità».

25 T he woman saith to him, `I have known that Messiah doth come, who is called Christ, when that one may come, he will tell us all things;'

La donna gli disse: «Io so che il Messia (che è chiamato Cristo) deve venire; quando sarà venuto ci annuncerà ogni cosa».

26 J esus saith to her, `I am, who am speaking to thee.'

Gesù le disse: «Sono io, io che ti parlo!»

27 A nd upon this came his disciples, and were wondering that with a woman he was speaking, no one, however, said, `What seekest thou?' or `Why speakest thou with her?'

In quel mentre giunsero i suoi discepoli e si meravigliarono che egli parlasse con una donna; eppure nessuno gli chiese: «Che cerchi?» o: «Perché discorri con lei?»

28 T he woman then left her water-jug, and went away to the city, and saith to the men,

La donna lasciò dunque la sua secchia, se ne andò in città e disse alla gente:

29 ` Come, see a man, who told me all things -- as many as I did; is this the Christ?'

«Venite a vedere un uomo che mi ha detto tutto quello che ho fatto; non potrebbe essere lui il Cristo?»

30 T hey went forth therefore out of the city, and were coming unto him.

La gente uscì dalla città e andò da lui.

31 A nd in the meanwhile his disciples were asking him, saying, `Rabbi, eat;'

Intanto i discepoli lo pregavano, dicendo: «Rabbì, mangia».

32 a nd he said to them, `I have food to eat that ye have not known.'

Ma egli disse loro: «Io ho un cibo da mangiare che voi non conoscete».

33 T he disciples then said one to another, `Did any one bring him anything to eat?'

Perciò i discepoli si dicevano gli uni gli altri: «Forse qualcuno gli ha portato da mangiare?»

34 J esus saith to them, `My food is, that I may do the will of Him who sent me, and may finish His work;

Gesù disse loro: «Il mio cibo è fare la volontà di colui che mi ha mandato, e compiere l’opera sua.

35 d o not say that it is yet four months, and the harvest cometh; lo, I say to you, Lift up your eyes, and see the fields, that they are white unto harvest already.

Non dite voi che ci sono ancora quattro mesi e poi viene la mietitura? Ebbene, vi dico: alzate gli occhi e guardate le campagne come già biancheggiano per la mietitura.

36 ` And he who is reaping doth receive a reward, and doth gather fruit to life age-during, that both he who is sowing and he who is reaping may rejoice together;

Il mietitore riceve una ricompensa e raccoglie frutto per la vita eterna, affinché il seminatore e il mietitore si rallegrino insieme.

37 f or in this the saying is the true one, that one is the sower and another the reaper.

Poiché in questo è vero il detto: “L’uno semina e l’altro miete”.

38 I sent you to reap that on which ye have not laboured; others laboured, and ye into their labour have entered.

Io vi ho mandati a mietere là dove voi non avete faticato; altri hanno faticato, e voi siete subentrati nella loro fatica».

39 A nd from that city many believed in him, of the Samaritans, because of the word of the woman testifying, -- `He told me all things -- as many as I did.'

Molti Samaritani di quella città credettero in lui a motivo della testimonianza resa da quella donna: «Egli mi ha detto tutto quello che ho fatto».

40 W hen, then, the Samaritans came unto him, they were asking him to remain with them, and he remained there two days;

Quando dunque i Samaritani andarono da lui, lo pregarono di trattenersi da loro; ed egli si trattenne là due giorni.

41 a nd many more did believe because of his word,

E molti di più credettero a motivo della sua parola

42 a nd said to the woman -- `No more because of thy speaking do we believe; for we ourselves have heard and known that this is truly the Saviour of the world -- the Christ.'

e dicevano alla donna: «Non è più a motivo di quello che tu ci hai detto, che crediamo; perché noi stessi abbiamo udito e sappiamo che questi è veramente il Salvatore del mondo». Gesù in Galilea; guarigione del figlio di un ufficiale

43 A nd after the two days he went forth thence, and went away to Galilee,

Trascorsi quei due giorni, egli partì di là per la Galilea;

44 f or Jesus himself testified that a prophet in his own country shall not have honour;

poiché Gesù stesso aveva attestato che un profeta non è onorato nella sua patria.

45 w hen then, he came to Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all things that he did in Jerusalem in the feast -- for they also went to the feast.

Quando dunque giunse in Galilea, fu accolto dai Galilei, perché avevano visto le cose che egli aveva fatte in Gerusalemme durante la festa; essi pure infatti erano andati alla festa.

46 J esus came, therefore, again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine, and there was a certain courtier, whose son was ailing in Capernaum,

Egli dunque venne di nuovo a Cana di Galilea, dove aveva cambiato l’acqua in vino. Vi era un ufficiale del re, il cui figlio era infermo a Capernaum.

47 h e, having heard that Jesus is come out of Judea to Galilee, went away unto him, and was asking him that he may come down and may heal his son, for he was about to die.

Come egli ebbe udito che Gesù era venuto dalla Giudea in Galilea, andò da lui e lo pregò che scendesse e guarisse suo figlio, perché stava per morire.

48 J esus then said unto him, `If signs and wonders ye may not see, ye will not believe.'

Perciò Gesù gli disse: «Se non vedete segni e miracoli, voi non crederete».

49 T he courtier saith unto him, `Sir, come down before my child die;'

L’ufficiale del re gli disse: «Signore, scendi prima che il mio bambino muoia».

50 J esus saith to him, `Be going on; thy son doth live.' And the man believed the word that Jesus said to him, and was going on,

Gesù gli disse: «Va’, tuo figlio vive». Quell’uomo credette alla parola che Gesù gli aveva detta, e se ne andò.

51 a nd he now going down, his servants met him, and told, saying -- `Thy child doth live;'

E mentre già stava scendendo, i suoi servi gli andarono incontro e gli dissero che suo figlio viveva.

52 h e inquired then of them the hour in which he became better, and they said to him -- `Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him;'

Allora egli domandò a che ora avesse cominciato a stare meglio; ed essi gli risposero: «Ieri, all’ora settima, la febbre lo ha lasciato».

53 t hen the father knew that in that hour in which Jesus said to him -- `Thy son doth live,' and he himself believed, and his whole house;

Così il padre riconobbe che quella era l’ora in cui Gesù gli aveva detto: «Tuo figlio vive»; e credette, lui con tutta la sua casa.

54 t his again a second sign did Jesus, having come out of Judea to Galilee.

Gesù fece questo secondo segno tornando dalla Giudea in Galilea.
