1 W o Ariel, Ariel, The city of the encampment of David! Add year to year, let festivals go round.

Guai ad Ariel, ad Ariel, città dove accampò Davide! Aggiungete anno ad anno, compiano le feste il loro ciclo!

2 A nd I have sent distress to Ariel, And it hath been lamentation and mourning, And it hath been to me as Ariel.

Poi stringerò Ariel da vicino; vi saranno lamenti e gemiti e mi sarà come un Ariel.

3 A nd I encamped, O babbler, against thee, And I laid siege against thee -- a camp. And I raised up against thee bulwarks.

Io porrò il mio accampamento attorno a te come un cerchio, io ti circonderò di fortilizi, eleverò contro di te opere d’assedio.

4 A nd thou hast been low, From the earth thou speakest, And from the dust makest thy saying low, And thy voice hath been from the earth, As one having a familiar spirit, And from the dust thy saying whisperest,

Sarai abbassata, parlerai da terra e la tua parola uscirà sommessamente dalla polvere; la tua voce salirà dal suolo come quella di uno spettro e la tua parola sorgerà dalla polvere come un bisbiglio.

5 A nd as small dust hath been The multitude of those scattering thee, And as chaff passing on the multitude of the terrible, And it hath been at an instant -- suddenly.

Ma la moltitudine dei tuoi nemici diventerà come polvere minuta, e la folla di quei terribili come pula che vola; ciò avverrà a un tratto, in un attimo.

6 B y Jehovah of Hosts thou art inspected, With thunder, and with an earthquake, And great noise, hurricane, and whirlwind, And flame of devouring fire.

Sarai visitata dal Signore degli eserciti con tuoni, terremoti e grandi rumori, con turbine, tempesta, con fiamma di fuoco divorante.

7 A nd as a dream, a vision of night, hath been The multitude of all the nations Who are warring against Ariel, And all its warriors, and its bulwark, Even of those distressing her.

La folla di tutte le nazioni che marciano contro Ariel, di tutti quelli che attaccano lei e la sua cittadella e la stringono da vicino, sarà come un sogno, come una visione notturna.

8 A nd it hath been, as when the hungry dreameth, And lo, he is eating, And he hath waked, and empty his soul, And as when the thirsty dreameth, And lo, he is drinking, and he hath waked, And lo, he is weary, and his soul is longing, So is the multitude of all the nations Who are warring against mount Zion.

Come un affamato sogna ed ecco che mangia, poi si sveglia e ha lo stomaco vuoto; come uno che ha sete sogna di bere, poi si sveglia ed eccolo stanco e assetato, così avverrà della folla di tutte le nazioni che marciano contro il monte Sion.

9 T arry and wonder, look ye, yea, look, Be drunk, and not with wine, Stagger, and not with strong drink.

Stupitevi pure… sarete stupiti! Chiudete pure gli occhi… diventerete ciechi! Costoro sono ubriachi, ma non di vino; barcollano, ma non per bevande alcoliche.

10 F or poured out on you hath Jehovah a spirit of deep sleep, And He closeth your eyes -- the prophets, And your heads -- the seers -- He covered.

È il Signore che ha sparso su di voi uno spirito di torpore; ha chiuso i vostri occhi, i profeti, ha velato i vostri capi, i veggenti.

11 A nd the vision of the whole is to you, As words of the sealed book, That they give unto one knowing books, Saying, `Read this, we pray thee,' And he hath said, `I am not able, for it sealed;'

Tutte le visioni profetiche sono divenute per voi come le parole di uno scritto sigillato che si desse a uno che sa leggere, dicendogli: «Ti prego, leggi questo!» Egli risponderebbe: «Non posso, perché è sigillato!»

12 A nd the book is given to him who hath not known books, Saying, `Read this, we pray thee,' And he hath said, `I have not known books.'

Oppure come uno scritto che si desse a uno che non sa leggere, dicendogli: «Ti prego, leggi questo!» Egli risponderebbe: «Non so leggere».

13 A nd the Lord saith: Because drawn near hath this people, with its mouth, And with its lips they have honoured Me, And its heart it hath put far off from Me, And their fear of Me is -- A precept of men is taught!

Il Signore ha detto: «Poiché questo popolo si avvicina a me con la bocca e mi onora con le labbra, mentre il suo cuore è lontano da me e il timore che ha di me non è altro che un comandamento imparato dagli uomini,

14 T herefore, lo, I am adding to do wonderfully with this people, A wonder, and a marvel, And perished hath the wisdom of its wise ones, And the understanding of its intelligent ones hideth itself.'

in mezzo a questo popolo io continuerò a fare delle meraviglie, meraviglie su meraviglie; la saggezza dei suoi saggi perirà e l’intelligenza dei suoi intelligenti sparirà ».

15 W o those going deep from Jehovah to hide counsel, And whose works have been in darkness. And they say, `Who is seeing us? And who is knowing us?'

Guai a quelli che si allontanano dal Signore in luoghi profondi per nascondere i loro disegni, che fanno le loro opere nelle tenebre e dicono: «Chi ci vede? Chi ci conosce?»

16 Y our perversion! as clay is the potter esteemed? That the work saith of its maker, `He hath not made me?' And the framed thing said of its framer, `He did not understand?'

Che perversità è la vostra! Il vasaio sarà forse considerato al pari dell’argilla al punto che l’opera dica all’operaio: «Egli non mi ha fatto»? Al punto che il vaso dica del vasaio: «Non ci capisce nulla»? Promesse per Israele

17 I s it not yet a very little, And turned hath Lebanon to a fruitful field, And the fruitful field for a forest is reckoned?

Ancora un brevissimo tempo e il Libano sarà mutato in un frutteto, e il frutteto sarà considerato come una foresta.

18 A nd heard in that day have the deaf the words of a book, And out of thick darkness, and out of darkness, The eyes of the blind do see.

In quel giorno i sordi udranno le parole del libro e, liberati dall’oscurità e dalle tenebre, gli occhi dei ciechi vedranno;

19 A nd the humble have added joy in Jehovah, And the poor among men In the Holy One of Israel rejoice.

gli umili avranno abbondanza di gioia nel Signore e i più poveri tra gli uomini esulteranno nel Santo d’Israele;

20 F or ceased hath the terrible one, And consumed hath been the scorner, And cut off have been all watching for iniquity,

poiché il violento sarà scomparso, il beffardo non sarà più e saranno distrutti tutti quelli che vegliano per commettere iniquità,

21 C ausing men to sin in word, And for a reprover in the gate lay a snare, And turn aside into emptiness the righteous.

che condannano un uomo per una parola, che tendono tranelli a chi difende le cause alla porta e violano il diritto del giusto per un nulla.

22 T herefore, thus said Jehovah, Who ransomed Abraham, Concerning the house of Jacob: `Not now ashamed is Jacob, Nor now doth his face become pale,

Perciò così dice il Signore alla casa di Giacobbe, il Signore che riscattò Abraamo: «Giacobbe non avrà più da vergognarsi e la sua faccia non impallidirà più.

23 F or in his seeing his children, The work of My hand, in his midst, They sanctify My name, And have sanctified the Holy One of Jacob, And the God of Israel they declare fearful.

Poiché, quando i suoi figli vedranno in mezzo a loro l’opera delle mie mani, santificheranno il mio nome, santificheranno il Santo di Giacobbe e temeranno grandemente il Dio d’Israele;

24 A nd the erring in spirit have known understanding, And murmurers learn doctrine!'

i traviati di spirito impareranno la saggezza e i mormoratori accetteranno l’istruzione».
