1 B etter a name than good perfume, And the day of death than the day of birth.

2 B etter to go unto a house of mourning, Than to go unto a house of banqueting, For that is the end of all men, And the living layeth unto his heart.

È meglio andare in una casa in lutto, che andare in una casa in festa; poiché là è la fine di ogni uomo, e colui che vive vi porrà mente.

3 B etter sorrow than laughter, For by the sadness of the face the heart becometh better.

La tristezza vale più del riso; poiché quando il viso è afflitto, il cuore diventa migliore.

4 T he heart of the wise in a house of mourning, And the heart of fools in a house of mirth.

Il cuore del saggio è nella casa del pianto; ma il cuore degli stolti è nella casa della gioia.

5 B etter to hear a rebuke of a wise man, Than a man to hear a song of fools,

Vale più udire la riprensione del saggio, che udire la canzone degli stolti.

6 F or as the noise of thorns under the pot, So the laughter of a fool, even this vanity.

Infatti quale è lo scoppiettio dei pruni sotto una pentola, tale è il riso dello stolto. Anche questo è vanità.

7 S urely oppression maketh the wise mad, And a gift destroyeth the heart.

Certo l’oppressione rende insensato il saggio, e il dono fa perdere il senno.

8 B etter the latter end of a thing than its beginning, Better the patient of spirit, than the haughty of spirit.

Vale più la fine di una cosa, che il suo principio; e lo spirito paziente vale più dello spirito altero.

9 B e not hasty in thy spirit to be angry, For anger in the bosom of fools resteth.

Non ti affrettare a irritarti nello spirito tuo, perché l’irritazione riposa in seno agli stolti.

10 S ay not thou, `What was it, That the former days were better than these?' For thou hast not asked wisely of this.

Non dire: «Come mai i giorni di prima erano migliori di questi?», poiché non è da saggio domandarsi questo.

11 W isdom good with an inheritance, And an advantage to those beholding the sun.

La saggezza è buona quanto un’eredità, e anche di più, per quelli che vedono il sole.

12 F or wisdom a defense, money a defence, And the advantage of the knowledge of wisdom, She reviveth her possessors.

Infatti la saggezza offre un riparo, come l’offre il denaro; ma l’eccellenza della scienza sta in questo, che la saggezza fa vivere quelli che la possiedono.

13 S ee the work of God, For who is able to make straight that which He made crooked?

Considera l’opera di Dio; chi potrà raddrizzare ciò che egli ha reso curvo?

14 I n a day of prosperity be in gladness, And in a day of evil consider. Also this over-against that hath God made, To the intent that man doth not find anything after him.

Nel giorno della prosperità godi del bene, e nel giorno dell’avversità rifletti. Dio ha fatto l’uno come l’altro, affinché l’uomo non scopra nulla di ciò che sarà dopo di lui.

15 T he whole I have considered in the days of my vanity. There is a righteous one perishing in his righteousness, and there is a wrong-doer prolonging in his wrong.

Ho visto tutto questo nei giorni della mia vanità. C’è un tale giusto che perisce per la sua giustizia, e c’è un tale empio che prolunga la sua vita con la sua malvagità.

16 B e not over-righteous, nor show thyself too wise, why art thou desolate?

Non essere troppo giusto e non farti troppo saggio; perché vorresti rovinarti?

17 D o not much wrong, neither be thou a fool, why dost thou die within thy time?

Non essere troppo empio e non essere stolto; perché dovresti morire prima del tempo?

18 g ood that thou dost lay hold on this, and also, from that withdrawest not thy hand, for whoso is fearing God goeth out with them all.

È bene che tu ti attenga fermamente a questo, e che non allontani la mano da quello; chi teme Dio infatti evita tutte queste cose.

19 T he wisdom giveth strength to a wise man, more than wealth the rulers who have been in a city.

La saggezza dà al saggio più forza che non facciano dieci capi in una città.

20 B ecause there is not a righteous man on earth that doth good and sinneth not.

Certo, non c’è sulla terra nessun uomo giusto che faccia il bene e non pecchi mai.

21 A lso to all the words that they speak give not thy heart, that thou hear not thy servant reviling thee.

Non porre dunque mente a tutte le parole che si dicono, per non sentirti maledire dal tuo servo;

22 F or many times also hath thy heart known that thou thyself also hast reviled others.

poiché il tuo cuore sa che spesso anche tu hai maledetto altri. La saggezza non si trova quaggiù

23 A ll this I have tried by wisdom; I have said, `I am wise,' and it far from me.

Io ho esaminato tutto questo con saggezza. Ho detto: «Voglio acquistare saggezza», ma la saggezza è rimasta lontano da me.

24 F ar off that which hath been, and deep, deep, who doth find it?

Una cosa che è tanto lontana e tanto profonda chi potrà trovarla?

25 I have turned round, also my heart, to know and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and reason, and to know the wrong of folly, and of foolishness the madness.

Io mi sono applicato in cuor mio a riflettere, a investigare, a cercare la saggezza e il perché delle cose, e a riconoscere che l’empietà è una follia e la stoltezza una pazzia.

26 A nd I am finding more bitter than death, the woman whose heart nets and snares, her hands bands; the good before God escapeth from her, but the sinner is captured by her.

Ho trovato una cosa più amara della morte: la donna tutta tranelli, il cui cuore non è altro che reti e le cui mani sono catene; chi è gradito a Dio le sfugge, ma il peccatore rimane preso da lei.

27 S ee, this I have found, said the Preacher, one to one, to find out the reason

«Ecco, questo ho trovato», dice l’Ecclesiaste, «dopo aver esaminato le cose una ad una per afferrarne la ragione;

28 ( that still my soul had sought, and I had not found), One man, a teacher, I have found, and a woman among all these I have not found.

ecco quello che io cerco ancora, senza averlo trovato: un uomo fra mille l’ho trovato, ma una donna fra tutte non l’ho trovata.

29 S ee, this alone I have found, that God made man upright, and they -- they have sought out many devices.

Questo soltanto ho trovato: che Dio ha fatto l’uomo retto, ma gli uomini hanno cercato molti sotterfugi».
