1 B etter a name than good perfume, And the day of death than the day of birth.

„Mai de preţ este un nume bun decât untdelemnul mirositor şi mai mult preţuieşte ziua morţii decât ziua naşterii.

2 B etter to go unto a house of mourning, Than to go unto a house of banqueting, For that is the end of all men, And the living layeth unto his heart.

Mai bine să mergi într-o casă de jale decât într-o casă de petrecere, căci acesta este sfârşitul oricărui om, iar cel rămas în viaţă ar trebui să priceapă aceasta.

3 B etter sorrow than laughter, For by the sadness of the face the heart becometh better.

Mai bună este tristeţea decât râsul, căci prin întristarea feţei inima se face mai bună.

4 T he heart of the wise in a house of mourning, And the heart of fools in a house of mirth.

Inima înţelepţilor se află în casa de jale, dar inima proştilor se află în casa de petrecere.

5 B etter to hear a rebuke of a wise man, Than a man to hear a song of fools,

Mai bine să asculţi mustrarea înţeleptului, decât să auzi cântecul proştilor.

6 F or as the noise of thorns under the pot, So the laughter of a fool, even this vanity.

Precum pârâie spinii sub oală, aşa este şi râsul prostului! Şi aceasta este o deşertăciune!

7 S urely oppression maketh the wise mad, And a gift destroyeth the heart.

Asuprirea îl transformă pe înţelept într-un prost, iar mita corupe inima.

8 B etter the latter end of a thing than its beginning, Better the patient of spirit, than the haughty of spirit.

Mai bun este sfârşitul unui lucru decât începutul lui şi mai bună este răbdarea decât mândria.

9 B e not hasty in thy spirit to be angry, For anger in the bosom of fools resteth.

Nu te grăbi să te mânii în duhul tău, căci mânia locuieşte în sânul nesăbuiţilor!

10 S ay not thou, `What was it, That the former days were better than these?' For thou hast not asked wisely of this.

Să nu zici: «De ce au fost zilele dintâi mai bune decât acestea?», căci nu din înţelepciune întrebi aceasta!

11 W isdom good with an inheritance, And an advantage to those beholding the sun.

Este bună înţelepciunea, aşa cum şi moştenirea este bună şi de folos celor ce văd soarele,

12 F or wisdom a defense, money a defence, And the advantage of the knowledge of wisdom, She reviveth her possessors.

căci înţelepciunea este un adăpost, tot aşa cum şi argintul este un adăpost, dar câştigul cunoaşterii înţelepciunii este acela că dă viaţă celui ce o are.

13 S ee the work of God, For who is able to make straight that which He made crooked?

Caută să înţelegi lucrarea lui Dumnezeu: cine poate îndrepta ceea ce El a îndoit?

14 I n a day of prosperity be in gladness, And in a day of evil consider. Also this over-against that hath God made, To the intent that man doth not find anything after him.

Când vremurile sunt bune, fii fericit! Când vremurile sunt rele, cugetă: Dumnezeu le-a făcut şi pe unele şi pe celelalte, astfel încât omul să nu poată afla nimic despre viitorul său.

15 T he whole I have considered in the days of my vanity. There is a righteous one perishing in his righteousness, and there is a wrong-doer prolonging in his wrong.

Am văzut tot felul de lucruri în timpul vieţii mele deşarte: un om drept pierind în dreptatea lui, iar altul nedrept continuându-şi viaţa în nedreptatea lui.

16 B e not over-righteous, nor show thyself too wise, why art thou desolate?

Nu fi prea drept şi nu te arăta prea înţelept! De ce să te distrugi singur?

17 D o not much wrong, neither be thou a fool, why dost thou die within thy time?

Însă nu fi nici foarte rău şi nu fi nici nesăbuit! De ce să mori înainte de vreme?

18 g ood that thou dost lay hold on this, and also, from that withdrawest not thy hand, for whoso is fearing God goeth out with them all.

Este bine pe una dintre atenţionări să o apuci, iar pe cealaltă să n-o laşi din mână, căci cine se teme de Dumnezeu le va urma pe amândouă.

19 T he wisdom giveth strength to a wise man, more than wealth the rulers who have been in a city.

Înţelepciunea dă mai multă tărie înţeleptului, decât ar da zece conducători destoinici unei cetăţi.

20 B ecause there is not a righteous man on earth that doth good and sinneth not.

Nu există pe pământ nici un om drept care să facă numai binele şi niciodată să nu păcătuiască!

21 A lso to all the words that they speak give not thy heart, that thou hear not thy servant reviling thee.

În plus, nu lua aminte la toate cuvintele care se spun, ca nu cumva să-l auzi pe slujitorul tău blestemându-te!

22 F or many times also hath thy heart known that thou thyself also hast reviled others.

Tu ştii în inima ta că, de mai multe ori, chiar tu însuţi i-ai blestemat pe alţii.

23 A ll this I have tried by wisdom; I have said, `I am wise,' and it far from me.

Toate acestea le-am cercetat cu înţelepciune şi mi-am zis: «Mă voi înţelepţi!», dar înţelepciunea s-a îndepărtat de la mine.

24 F ar off that which hath been, and deep, deep, who doth find it?

Orice ar fi ea, este departe şi învăluită în mister! Cine o va găsi?!

25 I have turned round, also my heart, to know and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and reason, and to know the wrong of folly, and of foolishness the madness.

M-am hotărât să cunosc, să cercetez şi să caut înţelepciunea şi discernământul şi să pricep stupiditatea răutăţii şi nebunia nesăbuinţei.

26 A nd I am finding more bitter than death, the woman whose heart nets and snares, her hands bands; the good before God escapeth from her, but the sinner is captured by her.

Am descoperit că mai amară decât moartea este femeia care întinde curse, al cărei suflet este o capcană şi ale cărei mâini sunt nişte lanţuri. Cel plăcut înaintea lui Dumnezeu scapă de ea, dar cel păcătos este prins de ea.

27 S ee, this I have found, said the Preacher, one to one, to find out the reason

Iată ce am descoperit, zice oratorul: am cercetat lucrurile unul după altul, căutând să le pricep rostul,

28 ( that still my soul had sought, and I had not found), One man, a teacher, I have found, and a woman among all these I have not found.

însă, din tot ce a căutat sufletul meu, nu am găsit decât aceasta: din o mie de oameni am găsit un bărbat drept, dar nu am găsit nici măcar o femeie dreaptă.

29 S ee, this alone I have found, that God made man upright, and they -- they have sought out many devices.

Singurul lucru sigur pe care l-am descoperit este că Dumnezeu l-a făcut pe om drept, dar omul umblă cu multe şiretlicuri.“
