1 ` And these the judgments which thou dost set before them:

„Acestea sunt legile pe care trebuie să le pui înaintea lor:

2 ` When thou buyest a Hebrew servant -- six years he doth serve, and in the seventh he goeth out as a freeman for nought;

«Dacă vei cumpăra un sclav evreu, el să te slujească timp de şase ani, iar în al şaptelea an să iasă liber, fără să plătească nimic.

3 i f by himself he cometh in, by himself he goeth out; if he owner of a wife, then his wife hath gone out with him;

Dacă a intrat singur, va putea să plece singur. Dacă era căsătorit, să plece şi soţia lui împreună cu el.

4 i f his lord give to him a wife, and she hath borne to him sons or daughters -- the wife and her children are her lord's, and he goeth out by himself.

Dacă stăpânul lui i-a dat o soţie şi ea i-a născut fii sau fiice, soţia şi copiii ei să rămână ai stăpânului, iar el să plece singur.

5 ` And if the servant really say: I have loved my lord, my wife, and my sons -- I do not go out free;

Dar dacă sclavul va zice: ‘Îmi iubesc stăpânul, soţia şi copiii, şi nu doresc să plec ca să fiu liber’,

6 t hen hath his lord brought him nigh unto God, and hath brought him nigh unto the door, or unto the side-post, and his lord hath bored his ear with an awl, and he hath served him -- to the age.

atunci stăpânul să-l apropie de uşă sau de uşori şi, în prezenţa judecătorilor, să-i străpungă lobul urechii cu o andrea. Astfel, el îi va sluji toată viaţa.

7 ` And when a man selleth his daughter for a handmaid, she doth not go out according to the going out of the men-servants;

Dacă cineva îşi vinde fata ca slujitoare, ea nu va fi eliberată asemenea sclavilor.

8 i f evil in the eyes of her lord, so that he hath not betrothed her, then he hath let her be ransomed; to a strange people he hath not power to sell her, in his dealing treacherously with her.

De asemenea, dacă ea nu-i va plăcea stăpânului ei, care şi-a luat-o pentru el, acesta trebuie să permită a fi răscumpărată. Nu va avea dreptul s-o vândă unui străin, pentru că a fost nedrept cu ea.

9 ` And if to his son he betroth her, according to the right of daughters he doth to her.

Dacă o va da fiului său, va trebui să se poarte cu ea ca şi cu o fiică.

10 ` If another he take for him, her food, her covering, and her habitation, he doth not withdraw;

Dacă îşi va lua altă soţie, nu va avea voie să-i scadă nimic din hrana, îmbrăcămintea şi drepturile ei de soţie.

11 a nd if these three he do not to her, then she hath gone out for nought, without money.

Dacă-i va scădea din aceste trei lucruri, atunci ea va putea să plece de la el fără nici o despăgubire, fără să plătească argint. Legi privind violenţa fizică

12 ` He who smiteth a man so that he hath died, is certainly put to death;

Oricine loveşte mortal un om trebuie să fie pedepsit cu moartea.

13 a s to him who hath not laid wait, and God hath brought to his hand, I have even set for thee a place whither he doth flee.

Dacă n-a făcut-o intenţionat, ci Dumnezeu a îngăduit să se întâmple asta, îi voi pregăti un loc unde să poată fugi.

14 ` And when a man doth presume against his neighbour to slay him with subtilty, from Mine altar thou dost take him to die.

Dacă cineva va merge până acolo încât să-l ucidă pe semenul său folosindu-se de vicleşug, chiar şi de la altarul Meu să-l iei şi să-l omori!

15 ` And he who smiteth his father or his mother is certainly put to death.

Oricine îşi loveşte tatăl sau mama trebuie să fie pedepsit cu moartea.

16 ` And he who stealeth a man, and hath sold him, and he hath been found in his hand, is certainly put to death.

Cine răpeşte un om şi-l vinde – sau chiar dacă omul este găsit în mâna răpitorului – trebuie să fie pedepsit cu moartea.

17 ` And he who is reviling his father or his mother is certainly put to death.

Cel ce îşi blestemă tatăl sau mama trebuie să fie pedepsit cu moartea.

18 ` And when men contend, and a man hath smitten his neighbour with a stone, or with the fist, and he die not, but hath fallen on the bed;

În cazul în care doi oameni se vor certa şi unul îl va lovi pe celălalt cu o piatră sau cu pumnul, iar acesta din urmă nu va muri, ci va fi nevoit să stea la pat,

19 i f he rise, and hath gone up and down without on his staff, then hath the smiter been acquitted; only his cessation he giveth, and he is thoroughly healed.

cel care l-a lovit să nu fie pedepsit, deoarece rănitul va putea să se ridice după o vreme şi să umble afară cu ajutorul toiagului lui; va trebui însă să-l despăgubească pe cel rănit pentru tot timpul pierdut şi să-l îngrijească până când acesta se va vindeca.

20 ` And when a man smiteth his man-servant or his handmaid, with a rod, and he hath died under his hand -- he is certainly avenged;

Dacă un stăpân va lovi cu băţul un sclav sau o sclavă, iar unul din aceştia va muri pe loc, stăpânul va trebui să fie pedepsit,

21 o nly if he remain a day, or two days, he is not avenged, for he his money.

dar dacă sclavul îşi revine după o zi sau două, stăpânul să nu fie pedepsit, căci este argintul său.

22 ` And when men strive, and have smitten a pregnant woman, and her children have come out, and there is no mischief, he is certainly fined, as the husband of the woman doth lay upon him, and he hath given through the judges;

Dacă se vor lupta doi oameni şi vor lovi o femeie însărcinată, făcând-o să nască înainte de vreme, fără nici o altă nenorocire, cel responsabil trebuie să fie pedepsit aşa cum cere soţul femeii, plătind atât cât au hotărât judecătorii.

23 a nd if there is mischief, then thou hast given life for life,

Dar, dacă se va întâmpla vreo nenorocire, vei da viaţă pentru viaţă,

24 e ye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,

ochi pentru ochi, dinte pentru dinte, mână pentru mână, picior pentru picior,

25 b urning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.

arsură pentru arsură, rană pentru rană şi vânătaie pentru vânătaie.

26 ` And when a man smiteth the eye of his man-servant, or the eye of his handmaid, and hath destroyed it, as a freeman he doth send him away for his eye;

Dacă un stăpân va lovi ochiul vreunui sclav sau al vreunei sclave şi-l face pe acesta sau pe aceasta să-şi piardă ochiul, sclavul, respectiv sclava, să fie lăsaţi să plece liberi ca despăgubire pentru ochi.

27 a nd if a tooth of his man-servant or a tooth of his handmaid he knock out, as a freeman he doth send him away for his tooth.

Dacă stăpânul va face să cadă un dinte de-al vreunui sclav sau de-al vreunei sclave, sclavul, respectiv sclava, să fie eliberaţi ca despăgubire pentru dinte.

28 ` And when an ox doth gore man or woman, and they have died, the ox is certainly stoned, and his flesh is not eaten, and the owner of the ox acquitted;

Dacă un bou va împunge şi va omorî un bărbat sau o femeie, boul să fie omorât cu pietre, carnea să nu i se mănânce, iar proprietarul boului să nu fie pedepsit.

29 a nd if the ox is accustomed to gore heretofore, and it hath been testified to its owner, and he doth not watch it, and it hath put to death a man or woman, the ox is stoned, and its owner also is put to death.

Dar, dacă se ştia că boul obişnuieşte să împungă şi proprietarul său a fost avertizat, însă nu l-a închis, atunci, în momentul în care boul va omorî un bărbat sau o femeie, acesta să fie omorât cu pietre, iar proprietarul său să fie pedepsit cu moartea.

30 ` If atonement is laid upon him, then he hath given the ransom of his life, according to all that is laid upon him;

Dacă proprietarului i se va cere un preţ de răscumpărare, el să plătească tot ce i se va cere pentru răscumpărarea vieţii lui.

31 w hether it gore a son or gore a daughter, according to this judgment it is done to him.

Dacă boul va împunge un băiat sau o fată, proprietarului i se va cere după aceeaşi lege.

32 ` If the ox gore a man-servant or a handmaid, thirty silver shekels he doth give to their lord, and the ox is stoned.

Dacă boul va împunge un sclav sau o sclavă, proprietarul să plătească stăpânului sclavilor treizeci de şecheli de argint, iar boul să fie omorât cu pietre.

33 ` And when a man doth open a pit, or when a man doth dig a pit, and doth not cover it, and an ox or ass hath fallen thither, --

Dacă un om va face o groapă şi nu o va acoperi, iar un bou sau un măgar va cădea în ea,

34 t he owner of the pit doth repay, money he doth give back to its owner, and the dead is his.

cel ce a făcut groapa va trebui să-l despăgubească cu argint pe proprietarul animalelor moarte, iar acestea să-i rămână celui dintâi.

35 ` And when a man's ox doth smite the ox of his neighbour, and it hath died, then they have sold the living ox, and halved its money, and also the dead one they do halve;

Dacă boul unui om va împunge boul altuia şi cel din urmă moare, atunci proprietarii lor vor trebui să vândă boul viu, să împartă argintul şi să împartă şi boul mort.

36 o r, it hath been known that the ox is accustomed to gore heretofore, and its owner doth not watch it, he certainly repayeth ox for ox, and the dead is his.

Dar, dacă se ştia că boul obişnuieşte să împungă şi proprietarul său nu l-a închis, atunci proprietarul să dea un bou viu în schimbul boului mort, iar boul mort să-i rămână lui.
