1 H ear, ye sons, the instruction of a father, And give attention to know understanding.

Ascultaţi, fiilor, povaţa unui tată; fiţi atenţi şi veţi dobândi pricepere!

2 F or good learning I have given to you, My law forsake not.

Eu vă dau îndrumări bune, nu respingeţi învăţătura mea!

3 F or, a son I have been to my father -- tender, And an only one before my mother.

Pe când eram băiat în casa tatălui meu şi fiul gingaş şi unic al mamei,

4 A nd he directeth me, and he saith to me: `Let thy heart retain my words, Keep my commands, and live.

mi se repeta şi mi se spunea: „Primeşte cuvintele mele cu toată inima ta, păstrează îndrumările mele şi vei trăi!

5 G et wisdom, get understanding, Do not forget, nor turn away From the sayings of my mouth.

Dobândeşte înţelepciunea, dobândeşte priceperea! Nu uita cuvintele mele şi nu te îndepărta de ele!

6 F orsake her not, and she doth preserve thee, Love her, and she doth keep thee.

Nu uita înţelepciunea şi ea te va proteja! Iubeşte-o, şi ea te va ocroti!

7 T he first thing wisdom -- get wisdom, And with all thy getting get understanding.

Înţelepciunea este cea mai importantă; de aceea dobândeşte înţelepciunea şi, cu orice preţ, dobândeşte priceperea!

8 E xalt her, and she doth lift thee up, She honoureth thee, when thou dost embrace her.

Preţuieşte-o şi ea te va înălţa; îmbrăţişeaz-o şi ea îţi va aduce onoare!

9 S he giveth to thy head a wreath of grace, A crown of beauty she doth give thee freely.

Ea îţi va pune pe cap o cunună graţioasă, îţi va da o coroană frumoasă.“

10 H ear, my son, and receive my sayings, And years of life multiplied to thee.

Ascultă, fiul meu, acceptă cuvintele mele şi anii vieţii tale vor fi lungi!

11 I n a way of wisdom I have directed thee, I have caused thee to tread in paths of uprightness.

Eu te îndrum pe calea înţelepciunii şi te conduc de-a lungul cărărilor drepte.

12 I n thy walking thy step is not straitened, And if thou runnest, thou stumblest not.

Când vei merge, paşii nu-ţi vor fi tulburaţi; când vei alerga, nu te vei împiedica.

13 L ay hold on instruction, do not desist, Keep her, for she thy life.

Perseverează în învăţătură, nu o neglija! Păstreaz-o, căci ea este viaţa ta!

14 I nto the path of the wicked enter not, And be not happy in a way of evil doers.

Nu-ţi pune piciorul pe cărarea ticăloşilor şi nu merge pe calea oamenilor răi!

15 A void it, pass not over into it, Turn aside from it, and pass on.

Evit-o, nu trece pe ea! Întoarce-te şi mergi pe calea ta!

16 F or they sleep not if they do not evil, And their sleep hath been taken violently away, If they cause not to stumble.

Aceia nu pot să doarmă dacă n-au făcut ceva rău; le piere somnul dacă nu fac pe cineva să se împiedice.

17 F or they have eaten bread of wickedness, And wine of violence they drink.

Ei mănâncă pâinea ticăloşiei şi beau vinul violenţei.

18 A nd the path of the righteous as a shining light, Going and brightening till the day is established,

Cărarea celor drepţi este ca licărirea zorilor care străluceşte tot mai mult până în plinul zilei.

19 T he way of the wicked as darkness, They have not known at what they stumble.

Dar calea celor răi este ca întunecimea, ei nu ştiu de ce se vor împiedica.

20 M y son, to my words give attention, To my sayings incline thine ear,

Fiul meu, fii atent la ceea ce îţi spun, ascultă cu atenţie cuvintele mele!

21 L et them not turn aside from thine eyes, Preserve them in the midst of thy heart.

Nu-ţi îndepărta privirea de la ele, păstrează-le în adâncul inimii tale,

22 F or life they to those finding them, And to all their flesh healing.

căci ele sunt viaţă pentru cei ce le găsesc şi sănătate pentru tot trupul lor.

23 A bove every charge keep thy heart, For out of it the outgoings of life.

Păzeşte-ţi inima mai mult decât orice, căci din ea ies izvoarele vieţii!

24 T urn aside from thee a froward mouth, And perverse lips put far from thee,

Îndepărtează înşelăciunea din gura ta şi înlătură ipocrizia de pe buzele tale!

25 T hine eyes do look straightforward, And thine eyelids look straight before thee.

Ochii tăi să privească direct înainte, şi pleoapele tale să ţintească drept înaintea ta.

26 P onder thou the path of thy feet, And all thy ways established.

Netezeşte-ţi cărarea picioarelor tale, şi toate căile tale să fie trainice.

27 I ncline not the right or to the left, Turn aside thy foot from evil!

Nu te abate nici la dreapta, nici la stânga! Îndepărtează-ţi piciorul de la rău!
