Cum s-a înnegrit aurul şi cum s-a schimbat aurul curat! Pietrele sfinte stau risipite pe la fiecare colţ de stradă.

Cum fiii preţioşi ai Sionului, altădată preţuiţi ca aurul pur, sunt consideraţi acum ca ulcioarele de lut, lucrate de mâinile olarului.

3 E ven dragons have drawn out the breast, They have suckled their young ones, The daughter of my people is become cruel, Like the ostriches in a wilderness.

Până şi şacalii îşi scot sânul ca să-şi alăpteze puii! Fiica poporului meu a ajuns însă nemiloasă ca struţii pustiei.

4 C leaved hath the tongue of a suckling unto his palate with thirst, Infants asked bread, a dealer out they have none.

Limba celui alăptat se lipeşte de cerul gurii, fiind uscată de sete. Copiii cer pâine, însă nimeni nu le-o dă.

5 T hose eating of dainties have been desolate in out-places, Those supported on scarlet have embraced dunghills.

Cei ce se hrăneau cu delicatese zac acum părăsiţi pe străzi. Cei crescuţi în purpură se lipesc acum de un morman de cenuşă.

6 A nd greater is the iniquity of the daughter of my people, Than the sin of Sodom, That was overturned as a moment, And no hands were stayed on her.

Vina fiicei poporului meu este mai mare decât păcatul Sodomei care a fost distrusă într-o clipă, fără a pune mâna cineva pe ea.

7 P urer were her Nazarites than snow, Whiter than milk, ruddier of body than rubies, Of sapphire their form.

Prinţii ei erau mai curaţi decât zăpada şi mai albi decât laptele. Trupurile le erau mai roşii decât coralii, iar feţele le erau ca safirul.

8 D arker than blackness hath been their visage, They have not been known in out-places, Cleaved hath their skin unto their bone, It hath withered -- it hath been as wood.

Acum însă sunt mai negri la înfăţişare decât funinginea, astfel că nu-i mai recunoşti pe străzi. Pielea li s-a lipit de oase şi a devenit uscată ca lemnul.

9 B etter have been the pierced of a sword Than the pierced of famine, For these flow away, pierced through, Without the increase of the field.

Cei ucişi de sabie sunt mai fericiţi decât cei ucişi de foamete; lihniţi de foame, aceştia se sting din lipsa roadelor câmpului!

10 T he hands of merciful women have boiled their own children, They have been for food to them, In the destruction of the daughter of my people.

Femeile, care odată erau pline de milă, şi-au fiert copiii cu mâinile lor; ei le-au slujit drept hrană când fiica poporului meu era zdrobită.

11 C ompleted hath Jehovah His fury, He hath poured out the fierceness of His anger, And he kindleth a fire in Zion, And it devoureth her foundations.

Domnul Şi-a dezlănţuit toată furia, Şi-a revărsat mânia Lui aprigă! A aprins un foc în Sion, care i-a mistuit temeliile.

12 B elieve not did the kings of earth, And any of the inhabitants of the world, That come would an adversary and enemy Into the gates of Jerusalem.

Regii pământului n-ar fi crezut şi nici unul din locuitorii lumii nu s-ar fi gândit că duşmanul şi vrăjmaşul vor intra pe porţile Ierusalimului.

13 B ecause of the sins of her prophets, The iniquities of her priests, Who are shedding in her midst the blood of the righteous,

S-a întâmplat din pricina păcatelor profeţilor lui şi a nelegiuirilor preoţilor lui care au vărsat în mijlocul lui sângele celor drepţi.

14 T hey have wandered naked in out-places, They have been polluted with blood, Without being able to touch their clothing,

Ei rătăcesc acum ca orbii pe străzi, atât de mânjiţi de sânge, încât nimeni nu îndrăzneşte să se atingă de veşmintele lor.

15 ` Turn aside -- unclean,' they called to them, `Turn aside, turn aside, touch not,' For they fled -- yea, they have wandered, They have said among nations: `They do not add to sojourn.'

„Plecaţi, necuraţilor!“ se strigă la ei; „Plecaţi! Plecaţi! Nu ne atingeţi!“ Fugind şi rătăcind printre neamuri, acestea spun: „Nu vor mai locui aici!“

16 T he face of Jehovah hath divided them, He doth not add to behold them, The face of priests they have not lifted up, Elders they have not favoured.

Domnul Însuşi i-a împrăştiat, nemaiveghind asupra lor. Astfel, preoţilor nu li se mai arată respect, iar bătrânilor nu li se mai acordă cinste.

17 W hile we exist -- consumed are our eyes for our vain help, In our watch-tower we have watched for a nation saveth not.

Ochii noştri obosiseră, aşteptând zadarnic ajutorul. Din turnurile noastre ne uitam după un neam care nu ne putea izbăvi.

18 T hey have hunted our steps from going in our broad-places, Near hath been our end, fulfilled our days, For come hath our end.

Duşmanii ne luau urma, astfel că nu puteam ieşi în pieţe. Sfârşitul se apropia, zilele se împliniseră, căci ne venise sfârşitul.

19 S wifter have been our pursuers, Than the eagles of the heavens, On the mountains they have burned us, In the wilderness they have laid wait for us.

Prigonitorii noştri au fost mai iuţi decât vulturii cerului. Ne-au urmărit pe munţi şi ne-au pândit în pustie.

20 T he breath of our nostrils -- the anointed of Jehovah, Hath been captured in their pits, of whom we said: `In his shadow we do live among nations.'

Unsul Domnului, suflarea vieţii noastre, a fost capturat în gropile lor, el, despre care spuneam: „Vom trăi la umbra lui printre neamuri!“

21 J oy and rejoice, O daughter of Edom, Dwelling in the land of Uz, Even unto thee pass over doth a cup, Thou art drunk, and makest thyself naked.

Bucură-te şi saltă de veselie, fiică a Edomului, tu, care locuieşti în ţara Uţ! Să ştii însă că potirul va trece şi pe la tine; te vei îmbăta şi te vei dezbrăca!

22 C ompleted thy iniquity, daughter of Zion, He doth not add to remove thee, He hath inspected thy iniquity, O daughter of Edom, He hath removed because of thy sins!

Fiică a Sionului, pedeapsa ta s-a sfârşit. El nu-ţi va mai prelungi exilul. Nelegiuirea ta însă, fiică a Edomului, El o va pedepsi şi îţi va scoate la iveală păcatele.
